I. INTRODUCTION GULF CONSULT was retained by ISAM KABBANI & PARTNERS (IKP) to perform and re-

scan the treated anomalies/weak spots/cavities for the proposed Classroom Building no. 57

project in King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

It is situated at 6Km North West of City Center of Al-Khobar. Its geographic location is 26° 18'

51.02" North Latitude and 50° 08' 57.51" East Longitude. See Figure 1.

Figure 1: shows the project site.

II. PURPOSE The main objective of the re-scanning survey is to check the subsoil weak spots/fractures/cavities

that were treated to 12 locations of the same depth that were previously been detected and

analyzed. At the end of the survey, GULF CONSULT shall provide IKP the survey report showing

images of these treated cavities in comparison with the previous data submitted.

III. METHODOLOGY The Scope of Work of this study is to re scan the proposed construction of building no. 57 project

in KFUPM, KSA. The scope of work performed by us consisted of the following:

1. Set the limit of underground cavity detection survey.

2. Perform Line Scan on Points #1, #2, #3, #5, #7, #8, #9, #11 & #12 where small size suspected cavities were found.

3. Perform 3d Scan on Points #4, #6 & #10 where high anomalies were marked on these areas.

4. A maximum depth of 15m along parallel lines at 1m equal interval using 100 MHz & 400 MHz antennas Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to determine these anomalies are free from unwanted cavities and voids.

5. Field sketching will be prepared in conjunction with underground detection survey as reference for data acquisition and processing.

6. Upon completion of field works, the survey area shall be reinstated to its pre-survey condition and;

7. Prepare engineering report to include the methodology, collection of data, processing, interpretation, and conclusion.

IV. GPR RE-SCANNING PROCEDURE GPR re-scanning was carried out in a cross-section direction for the detected low suspected

cavities. Shown in Figure 2 marked the direction for the low spot anomalies treated prior to re-

scanning.

V. STUDY AND CONCLUSION

This study was executed on the request of IKP project team to be able to review the present

condition of the subsoil upon completion of the treatment of the weak spots, fractures & cavities.

GULF CONSULT was retained by IKP to re-scan the foundation area with series of parallel lines at

1m interval in one direction which prior to re-scanning, the foundation area was treated and filled

with grout for stability of the subsoil.

As a result, GULF CONSULT executes the non-destructive Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

survey to locate those high greater response and larger pattern and shows images of the treated

weak zones.

Figure 20, 21, 22, … up to figure 42 exhibit the “Before and After treatment of the weak zone” on

page 12 to 23.

Obviously, the rough images before the treatment show greater magnitude compare to the present

subsoil condition after the treatment process where the present image is smooth and dimmer than

previous image. Therefore, we conclude that the weak zone has been properly treated accordingly.
