Principal’s Report

Creativity, Cleverness and Skill

Creativity, Cleverness and Skill have beenkey attributes of the mission of Stateschools for some time and none less sothan on display at Cavendish Road SHS last

Friday evening at the annual “Arts on the Green”. The talent ondisplay across all strands of the Arts Department was first classand credit to Head of Department, Mrs Tippett and herexceptional staff. In the preceding weeks I noted the standardof Music presented on the night was testament to studentpractice and the lead by Mr Lashmar and Instrumental Musicstaff. Positive Education

Positive Education in schools is being developed at CavendishRoad to provide ‘wrap around’ education for our young people.School culture is often talked about in terms of its absence orpresence and how strong it is perceived to be. Cav. Road has astrong culture of performance, but also of belonging and prideamongst students, staff and parents alike.

I have identified this not only as a quality for our school, butfundamental to our continuing success and performance of ourstudents. It needs to be explicit, modelled and taught. Parentsand carers will know from my very first newsletter I am a great

believer in, and committed to student welfare that builds lifeskills and resilience in our students. The world is unfortunatelytough, and we would want to protect our children as much aspossible, but equally important is to provide skills of managinglife generally.

Cavendish Road is a great school, with great outcomes andby and large a happy place. We provide many things thatoffer opportunity and challenge to the individual. With highperformance comes pressure to perform and often overly so bya young person who wants to succeed in a sea of success.Every child deserves to succeed. I know some of our studentsstruggle to keep up while others shine beyond their ownexpectation.

This program is not really a program. It is a way of thinkingbased upon neuroscience research that we can train ourselves, and behave towards others in our conversations andinteractions to promote all the good qualities of feeling onebelongs, being supported, to take on challenge and cruciallyhow to support others by thinking and acting positively;challenge negative mindsets and provide opportunity to makepositive contributions to the school community.

Student Support

Student Support is a key element of education delivery and forit to be effective this term we are introducing further measuresto keep, particularly our younger students, who becomedistracted from the ‘main game’ of learning, by using restorativejustice as a complement or alternative to natural consequencefor misbehaviour. Good discipline is essential to keep our socialand personal behaviour standards very high. I have a view thatif we get the thinking “right” I will have to use less the powersto suspend students for some of the major misbehaviours ofdisobedience, misconduct, or conduct prejudicial to the goodorder and management of the school. Such students will berequired to take part in a 3 or 5 day program of tailored supportand intervention to re-teach expectations and how they cancommit to what that means in practice for them and for thebenefit of the broader school community. I would expect thatif those new behaviours are embedded we may very well havestudents behaving better generally and not missing valuableschool days. That is a good thing for all concerned.

Students will access this support and intervention after ourrecent review of our school’s Responsible Behaviour Plan forStudents is endorsed and re-published on our website. Onceendorsed, this inclusion to our student management practicewill be implemented from week 6 this term and will operateonly on my referral. Ms Gardiner is managing this innovationthat includes the targeted services from our student servicesand support team that maintains student connection to theirlearning and schooling. The aim is not only to have studentslearn anew and re-think their behaviours but to ensure thatschool days are not lost which is a consequence of beingsuspended from school. Very serious misbehaviour will still bedealt with by consideration of suspension from school as thereremain some things completely inappropriate and againstcommunity standards.

Care and respect

Care and respect are two key values I try to adhere to andI wonder how we model and remind students of these. Ashumans we necessarily default to the negative. The amygdalais an ancient part of the brain that is all about survival. Forexample, if I don’t like something, fear something, or someone,self-preservation kicks in. I ask parents to make a routine, (andcarefully because teenagers will ‘twig’ to the game very quickly)to ask your child a couple of key questions to get those positivethoughts out there. Such as, ‘what is one (nice/supportive/kind)thing you did for someone else today without them asking? Didsomeone do something for you today that you appreciated? And did you tell them? We can fill our heads with negative orpositive thoughts that shape our attitude, our demeanour andour perspective on life. We have to be in a positive place to learnbest.

Welcome Ms Shauna McVie

Welcome to Ms Shauna McVie who started with us last weekas our new and third Guidance Officer. Ms McVie is recentlyqualified and we hope to be able to keep her on staff indefinitelyas part of our amazing GO team. Ms McVie is working notablywith Ms Gardiner in supporting our younger students but will

have a hands on approach with the wide range of Guidanceservices with Mr Ross and Ms Niland.

Year 10 Update: Subject SelectionEvening, SET-Plan and Interviews

Introduction of the new Senior Assessment andTertiary Entrance System in 2019

This system includes a model that uses school basedassessment and common external assessment; processes thatstrengthen the quality and comparability of school basedassessment and a move away from the Overall Position (OP)rank to an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

Staff at Cavendish State High School are well underway withtheir preparations for 2019.

The QCAA website provides useful information and hopefullyanswers some questions that you may have:

https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/new-snr-assessment-te/resources-faqs

The following information provides a snap shot of how we arepreparing our Year 10 students as they transition into Year 11.

Career Education Program

The Year 10 Careers Education Program has commenced onFridays period 1 during PSC. During this time, students learnmore about themselves, their interests, skills and areas of workthat may interest them. Each week, students are expected tocomplete a number of online modules. Class teachers workwith students to ensure they know which modules need to becompleted during the lesson. In order to be ready for SET-Planthese modules must be finished. This program concludes witha one page Career Snapshot that will be presented along withtheir SET-Plan, at the SET-Plan and Subject Selection Interviewthe week of 27 August.

Subject Selection Evening (Monday 20 August6:30-8:30 pm)

The Year 11 (2019) Subject Selection Evening is scheduledfor Monday 20 August 6:30-8:30 pm in the Hall. Due to largenumbers, the Year 10 cohort and evening will be spilt intotwo sessions rotating through: a) an ATAR presentation byQLD Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) in the Hall and HOD/subject discussions in the Resource Centre. We will requireall parents/carers to book through SOBs for this process withmore information to be advised as we come closer to theevent. All students and parents/care givers are expected toattend as subject selection handbooks, subject selection formsand subject and new ATAR information will be provided onthis evening. This information and documents is vital in guidingstudents and parents through the subject selection process forYear 11 2019.

https://www.qtac.edu.au/atar-my-path/atar

Subject Selection Forms will need to be completed by theweek of 27 August for Subject Selection Interviews.

Senior Education Training Plan (16 July – 24August)

To assist Year 10 students to plan courses of education andtraining through the next two years, all students will also berequired to develop a Senior Education and Training Plan(SET-Plan). This course is run here at school over the nextsix weeks and prepares students in selecting appropriate sixsubjects for year 11. SET–P provides students with a personallearning plan to guide their future career pathway and isdesigned to build on each student’s strengths and providethem with direction for the future career. My advice is to talkwith your students over the next six weeks and ask them toshow you their individual SET-P progress and develop online inOneSchool. Education Queensland mandates this initiativeand all students are expected to complete a SET-P.

Subject Selection Interviews (The week of 27August)

The SET-P process culminates with individual Subject SelectionInterviews. Trained Guidance Officers and members of theAdministration team will conduct these here at school. Eachinterview will be approximately 20 minutes. Every Year 10student must attend in order to enter his or her pre-preparedsubject selections into OneSchool. With the exception of theinterview appointment time, Year 10 students attend regulartimetabled classes on these dates. Parents are also welcometo attend this interview.

Students will require their SET-P to be completed and a subjectselection form signed and approved by parents for theinterview. They will receive a copy of their SET-P with intendedsubject choices to take home for parental/guardian approval.Students must attend their interview regardless of theirintended pathway in 2018.

Letters confirming interview appointment times will be providedto students by week six.

Any questions or comments can be directed to Mr Paul Cox(Deputy Principal), Ms Kate Niland, (Guidance Officer) or MrPaul Ross (Guidance Officer) on 3394 0777.

Kokoda Challenge 2018

Cavendish Road State High School has a long and proudhistory of participating in the Kokoda Challenge. This year wasno exception, with the school entering teams in both theBrisbane and Gold Coast events. The Kokoda Challenge eventsare recognised as some of the toughest endurance coursesin the country. It is hard to describe the demands that thischallenge place upon individuals and teams, but it is certainly achallenge that changes lives forever. The character building andlife experiences that take place within a supportive environmentare invaluable.

This year, Cavendish Road had 82 students and 21 leaderstake part in the event. Of our school’s 82 participants, 79completed the challenge they had set themselves, whilst threestudents pushed themselves to their limit until injury or illnessforced them to retire from the race.

The school’s participation would not be possible without thededication of our leaders, teachers and parents. As always, forany successful event, there is a huge effort that takes placebehind the scenes, from the efforts of the school’sadministrative staff through to the team support crews whokeep everything going while the teams are out on the track. We appreciate these contributions and thank you all for yourcommitment to our students. We very much appreciate theongoing support of the school P&C to help with the funding ofthe shirts.

As always, the students and teachers from the mighty “CavRd” were outstanding ambassadors for the school and werean excellent example of the values of the challenge - courage, endurance, mateship, sacrifice.

NAIDOC Week activities at Cav RoadNAIDOC Week is an important week for Indigenous people asit is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islandercultures, and is an opportunity to recognise the contributionsthat Indigenous Australians make to our country and oursociety.

This year’s NAIDOC theme was ‘Because of Her, We Can’.As pillars of our society, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderwomen have played – and continue to play - active and

significant roles in our community. They have fought andcontinue to fight, for justice, equal rights, access to education, employment and to maintain and celebrate our culture, language, music and art. They demand a better life, greateropportunities and equal rights - for us, our families and ourpeople. They are our mothers, our elders, our grandmothers, our aunties, our sisters and our daughters.

To celebrate this year’s theme, our Cav Road Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander students created posters that paid tributeto the important women in their lives. On Monday, 23 July wehosted a morning tea to share these tributes with our families, community elders and staff.

During that week students and staff also participated in ourannual Indigenous students v. teacher game of Buroinjin. Thiswas a ball game played by the Kabi Kabi people of southernQueensland – the game was played with a ball made ofkangaroo skin which was called a ‘buroinjin’.

Thank you to all students and staff involved in making our CavRoad NAIDOC celebrations a success!

Ski Trip

During the second week of the school holidays, forty-threeYear 11 and 12 students and six teachers headed down toPerisher for the 2018 Cav Road Ski Trip. After 18 hours onthe bus, we arrived at the Station Resort in Jindabyne where

students collected their skis and snowboards and made ourway up to Smiggins for our first lesson and afternoon of skiingand boarding. The weather conditions leading up to the triphad been favourable and we arrived to clear blue skies andgood snow. After a few hours on the slopes, we headed backdown to our accommodation for a shower and buffet dinner.Already there were stories of stacks and spills, but the smileson everyone’s faces showed that they all enjoyed the first day.

Each morning students had lessons at Smiggins, where theycontinued to progress their learning of skiing andsnowboarding. After the lessons, students had the opportunityto explore the other areas including, Mt Perisher, Back PerisherMt, Guthega Peak and Mt Blue Cow. With nearly all lifts andruns open, we were able to ski between each mountain ormake use of the shuttle bus and ski tube. The clear blue skiesand good snow remained all week, making it some of the bestconditions for early July in a number of years. At the conclusionof each day students would be sharing stories, videos andphotos of their progression. For some, it was conquering the TBar or chair lift without falling off or perhaps the jump they wentover, and for others it was the stacks they had. Regardless oftheir daily adventures, the conversations were full of excitementand laughter.

All forty-three students represented Cavendish Rd SHS in anexemplary manner and their behaviour for the duration of thetrip was of the highest standard. I would like to thank the otherfive staff members who gave up a week of their holidays toattend the trip. Without their support, we would be unable tocontinue offering such experiences. Therefore, a big thank youmust go to Mr Caruso, Miss Amos, Miss Signorini, Ms Ryan andMiss McCreary.

Planning is already underway for the 2019 Ski Trip, with thepossibility of heading to New Zealand for the first time. Moreinformation and expressions of interest will be advertised in thestudent notices, and distributed later this term.

After such a successful and fun week, I am looking forward tothe 2019 trip already.

Our Academy students had an amazing experiencealso, and after working through the awkwardness induced bylanguage and cultural barriers, were able to engage closely withthe Junten students and create some special memories.

Thanks to Maria Masselos and Lesley Huxley for their work incoordinating the visit, and to Paul Batchler for assisting withimplementing the program and engaging the Junten studentsand teachers.

Subject Selection- Prerequisites for continuedJapanese Study

We have many keen and motivated Japanese students whowill soon be considering their future study options. Pleaseremember that Japanese requires sequential study for bothsemesters in Year 9 as a prerequisite for Year 10 study.Enrolment into Year 10 Japanese is not possible if the studenthas not studied the necessary Year 9 grammar, vocabulary andscript. The same applies to Year 10 if students are to keepthe option open for Senior Japanese study in Year 11. The space was also used on the night forDrama and Dance performances. The Art Exhibition will remainin the Resource Centre for the next couple of weeks. Pleasedrop in to view the artwork.

The Resource Centre might not look much like a library at themoment. Shelves have been moved aside to allow for the artexhibition, parent teacher interviews and the like. But it is…

Book Week 2018 is around the corner. The theme for BookWeek is Find your Treasure. We are putting a slightly differentspin on the theme by promoting great books; in other words, books regarded as ‘great’ or ‘classic’ – for the way that theyhave continued to engage and inspire. Staff have been askedto name a Classic to contribute to our ‘Treasure a great bookdisplay’. In conjunction with the English Faculty, plenty of BookWeek activities are planned including a Trash to Treasure BookSwap, a Trivia Competition, and Costume Day, to name a few.
