Hello Everyone,
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year. Also, a very special thanks to the many COS members who donated so much of their time to help the club be successful last year. This is a volunteer club and without the dedica-tion of the member-ship we would not ex-
ist.
All of you that at-tended the recent Chattanooga show at the historic ChooChoo hotel know that we had an outstanding show. The entry was the highest in several years, a trend, which I hope, will continue! The hospitality suite sponsored by the COS and CMW was a huge success. There was lots of food and drink enjoyed by all. This gave everyone a great opportunity to see old friends and meet new ones in a fun and re-laxing setting. The seminar “Structure, Movement & Pedigree Analysis,” given by renowned Dr. Carmen Battaglia, was at-
tended by over 60 members. There was much positive feed-back, and hopefully we can continue to organize and support these types of semi-nars at future shows. Thanks specifically to the show chairs Linda Whitmire, Sharon Utych, and Cheryl Cline Stough for all of their hard work in making this show a
true success.
Looking forward, we have two of our big-gest shows of the year just around the cor-ner. The COS is proud to host the Puppy of the Year along with three days of confor-mation shows in his-toric colonial Wil-liamsburg, Virginia in March. This is always a fun show in a beau-tiful picturesque town. In May we are back in Atlanta with three days of confor-mation shows with judges Tina Holmes (Leogem, UK), Elaine Whitney (Sigma Chi, Canada) and Andy Vella (Cinderiac, UK). I hope everyone will mark their calendars for theses COS
events.
On a separate note
we are working hard on the new COS web-site. Several features are being incorpo-rated into the site with the goal of at-tracting the attention of new members. Breeders, please re-member to send pic-tures of your puppies and their new owners to [email protected] so that they can be placed on the home page. Another part of the website will link new members to men-tors in order to help them become more involved in the COS whether in confirma-tion, performance, therapy or other ar-eas of interest. WE NEED MENTORS. If you are interested please contact Sharon
Utych.
Thanks again to eve-ryone for a great
year,
Dr. Kevin Cline

Our newly redesigned website is up and running! The look and feel of
the website is similar to the National’s website for consistency. In-
cluded on the COS web are back issues of The Southern Cavalier in FULL
glorious color, COS officers and contact information, COS event infor-
mation (with links to the National’s event page), a therapy dog section
and an under construction mentor section. More enhancements are up-
coming including a slideshow section of your puppy people and their
pets!

Mentors Needed!
As a member of the COS, do you have any area of expertise that you would be willing to share with fellow members or
potential new members of this club?
In an effort to better support the diverse needs of our membership, we are seeking volunteers who would be willing
to share their knowledge in the following areas: Conformation, Agility, Rally, Obedience, Therapy, Grooming, Nutri-
tion, and House-training. If you have any other areas of expertise to add to this list, please let us know! The new
Mentor List is an effective tool used to help support the current membership, as well as to encourage new members
to join our club. Please join our effort!
Our goal is to build up a list of "experts", listing several possible contact people for each given topic. When an inquiry
for help comes in from the website, the person will then be referred by the webmaster to the appropriate volunteer
for that specific topic.
Any interested experts, please contact Caryna Fox at: [email protected].
The New COS Membership Directory
Recently, Members of the COS all received a copy of our new COS Directory. We hope you enjoyed receiving your
copy in the mail, and that you will keep it handy for future reference. The Board intends to issue the Membership
Directory on an annual basis, and will develop this idea even further for its future issues. This Directory is yet an-
other way to help promote communication amongst the COS Club Members.
The Board would like to thank several people who helped to put this Directory together, and sponsored the project.
The Directory was designed and formatted by Howard Bales. The printing and mailing was handled by Caryna Fox. A
financial donation to help defray the cost of mailing was received from Dr. Kevin Cline. Thank you, all.

Critique for Puppy Sweepstakes: Chattanooga, Tennessee/December 5, 2014
I would like to thank Cavaliers of the South for inviting me to judge their puppy sweepstakes in Chattanooga. The venue was lovely and the puppies were well presented. A special thanks to my ring steward Trisha DePhillip for taking pictures and keeping things moving along, and to
show chair Linda Whitmire who had a lovely ornament made of one of my favorite dogs. It made me feel special! - Katherine Kates, Judge
Junior Puppy Dog (1)
1st FAIRHAVEN DUNCAN DONUTS (Kris Hassig) 7 months old black and tan, this little boy has a nice short back and balanced shape, handsome head with round dark eyes, arched neck leading into a level top-line, lots of silky coat coming in, he moved very well in all directions, floating
around the ring, the only thing holding him back is that his mouth is undershot at this time.
Senior Puppy Dog (1)
1st CLOSEBURN MACIVER ALAN (Linda Fairchild) 11 months old blenheim, lovely moderate head on this boy, well broken rich tan markings and correct coat texture, flat top-line and good tail-set, his front and rear angles are somewhat straight causing restricted movement, otherwise a
beautiful example of the breed.
Graduate Puppy Dog (3)
1st MIMRIC MOVES LIKE JAGGER (Tia Painter and Mimi Hodges) 16 months old blenheim, masculine head on this boy, dark round eyes, a moderate amount of straight silky coat with blanketed markings, arched neck leading into well laid shoulders level top-line and correct tail-set, well turned stifle, his correct angles allow him to move with reach and drive, he also has lots of substance and well sprung ribs in a smaller package, he was a bit unsettled in the class but pulled himself together for later challenges, his quality could not be denied. (Best Puppy Dog, Best Puppy
in Sweeps)
2nd ANGEL’S PRIDE JUST A GIGOLO of SUMARA, JW (Kathy Gentil) 14 months old blenheim, handsome head with lovely eyes and good pigment,
good neck leading into well laid shoulders but he is high in the rear, moves with reach and drive.
3rd BROOKHAVEN JESSE McKINLEY (Donna J. and Charles Wills) 13 months old ruby, sweet face with round dark eyes, rich ruby coat coming in, he
is up on leg at this time, movement is rangy and needs to settle, wonderful temperament.
Junior Puppy Bitch (4)
1st CLOSEBURN BONNY WEE KILT (Linda Fairchild) 5 months old tri-color, adorable expression on this little girl’s face, good eyes and tans in all
the right places, good neck and shoulder placement, level back, compact body with lots of bone, balanced movement.
2nd BENTWOOD FORESTCREEK HOPE (Dr. Kevin Cline and Ginger Harrison) 7 months old blenheim, lovely moderate head with dark round eyes,
good shoulder placement and level top-line, lots of coat coming in, she was flipping her front on the move but she has a nice shape.
3rd CLOSEBURN BONNY BARONET (Linda Fairchild) 5 months old blenheim, another pretty, moderate head with large round eyes, she had good front and rear angles, lots of bone and substance but she was so nervous and only moved for a few seconds before she gave up, will do well when
she gains confidence.
4th BRYTHON KENTUCKY CROWN (Kay Trad) 7 months old blenheim, cute face but her muzzle is too long, good neck and shoulders but too much
leg under her, rangy movement, good temperament.

Senior Puppy Bitch (4)
1st WATERSEDGE PRETTY LITL ANGEL EYES (Norene and Donald Walzer and Dr. Kevin Cline) 10 months old blenheim, sweet and moderate head but needs fill, large dark eyes, silky heavily marked coat, good front and rear angles allowing for correct movement, lots of substance and she
has a lively temperament.
2nd TUDORR STERLING SILVER (Pat C. Mixon) 11 months old blenheim, pretty head with lots of fill but shows white in her right eye, nice com-
pact size with good neck and shoulders leading into a level top-line, lacks rear drive.
3rd TRUELEGANCE CHANTILLY LACE (Cindy Sinn and Valerie Cromer) 10 months old blenheim, sweet face but shows white in her right eye,
shoulder angle is correct but she stands high in the rear, rich chestnut markings, good substance, movement okay.
4th CHADWICK ICE DANCER (Donna J. and Charles Wills) 10 months old blenheim, beautiful eyes on this girl, good shoulder placement but she is
too long backed and stands high in the rear, sweet typical Cavalier temperament.
Graduate Puppy Bitch (3)
1st JAYBA BEATRIX (Pat Lander and Michelle Lander) 13 months old blenheim, pretty head with large round eyes, good neck leading into well laid shoulders and level top-line, perfect tail carriage, lovely shape when standing and she moved with reach and drive never faltering, she
was a bit nervous and would not carry her head up on the move so she had to settle for (Best Puppy Bitch.)
2nd TUDORR LA DOLCE VITA (Pat C. and Juhan Mixon and Dr. Kevin Cline) 16 months old blenheim, beautifully presented girl with the most
gorgeous head, lots of silky coat with dark chestnut markings, level top-line, movement needs to settle.
3rd CHADWICK SKY BLUE PINK (Lauren Hoehn) 12 months old blenheim, sweet face but too extreme for my taste, long neck and good shoul-
ders, another one too long backed, top-line high in the rear, movement needs to settle.

Membership Committee – Caryna Baker-Fox
Report: See Addendum
The Board had a general discussion of the membership committee meeting minutes from 8/7/14.
The Board discussed the Hospitality Suite for the Chattanooga show. We need to advertise, and to make a public announcement to invite our
guests.
Media/Website/Social Network – Kevin Cline
Website Update: With this new, updated website, the CMS (Content Management System) can be managed at the regional level, and this system is
a “real-time” system. It will make updates and changes easier and more convenient. We will now be able to offer useful content such as; “Find a
Puppy’, “New Member”, and “Mentor List”. The front page of the new site will include a slide show, featuring new pet owners, so that new mem-
bers may see themselves featured. The board discussed the creation of a possible “Members Only” area on the site, but decided that it wasn’t a
successful strategy.
Motion: Linda motioned to approve the new Home Page content “as-is”. Second made by Kevin. Motion unanimously passed.
Nominating Committee-
Election for 2015: The terms for Michelle Lander and Brenda Bailey expire.
Unfinished Business:
1. York Show- Nothing new to report from Howard and Beth
2. Chattanooga Show- The Battaglia seminar fee will be $20 for Members and $30 for non-members, paid in advance, and an additional $5 if paid
at the door. The seminar will be open to other Breed Clubs. Food/pizza and drink has been arranged with the hotel. Linda Whitmire asked if
PayPal or credit cards might be utilized to pay for the seminar. Elizabeth Gerkin, treasurer, said that she would be happy to look into it.
Motion: Elizabeth motioned to develop a feasibility report for accepting PayPal/credit cards. Second made by Pat. Motion unanimously
passed.
The judge for the Fun Match will be Michelle Lander.
3. Membership Directory- The COS Membership directory should normally be issued to the membership every year, to every four years. The initial
cost estimate, obtained by Caryna, is that the new Directory will cost $500-plus, including printing cost and postage. We should mention the new
Directory in the upcoming issue of The Southern Cavalier. It may be possible to find a sponsor to help defray the cost of printing the directory.
Motion: Howard motioned to have a stand-alone directory, with a cost not to exceed $1000. Second made by Elizabeth. Motion unani-
mously passed.
New Business:
1. Photo Booth
The COS Board, via email correspondence, voted unanimously to donate $500 to the CKCSC-USA to help fund the Photo Booth at the 2014
National Show in October, as requested by the CMW.
2. COS Class Entry Fees
Kevin presented to the Board a comparison of conformation class entry fees by region. Other Regions have increased their conformation class entry
fees to $20 per class.
Motion: Elizabeth motioned that the COS increase the class fee from $18 per class to $20 per class. Second made by Kevin. Motion unani-
mously approved.
COS Board Meeting Minutes
Page 12
Winter 2015
3. March 2015 Williamsburg Show
Kevin informed the Board that due to scheduling conflicts, the COS may possibly be trading the POTY National show event with CMW in 2015. Be-
cause the 2015 CMW-Dallas show hosting date falls on the same weekend as a UK Club show, the Judges Committee is having a very difficult time
finding a judge for the event. In this trade, the COS will host the POTY in March of 2015, and the CMW will then host the POTY in 2016. This ar-
rangement is still pending National Board approval. In anticipation of this change, the room block at the Holiday Inn-Patriot has already been in-
creased for 2015, in order to be sure that we can accommodate an increased entry.
Jan Gallagher will not be able to judge in March of 2015, so we are currently seeking a replacement judge. David Moger is the judge for Friday’s
show, and Paula Stark will be judging on Sunday for the CNE. The POTY judge selection is still undetermined.
4. May 2015 Atlanta Show
Brenda and Paula will be the show chairs for this show. The hotel contract is already in place, at the same venue as the 2014 show. The judges
are: Marion Mynott, Elaine Whitney, and Tina Holmes. The Sweeps judge will be Ricky Perkins.
The Board discussed the possibility of adding a Fun Match to this event in order to attract new members. Linda and Pat volunteered to chair the
Fun Match.
Motion: Caryna motioned to add a Fun Match to the Atlanta Show in 2015. Second made by Brenda. Motion unanimously approved.
Meeting Adjorned at 9:00 PM EST
Respectfully Submitted,
Caryna Baker-Fox
Secretary, Cavaliers of the South
Addendum:
Minutes from COS Membership Committee Meeting 8/7/14 @ 9:00 PM Members Absent: Pam Taub and Barb Magera 1. Appointment of Committee Chair Caryna, as nominated by Mimi. 2. Establishment of a Mission Statement and Meeting Schedule We will all think about the wording for a mission statement and prepare it for the next meeting. The committee will meet via teleconference every Thursday before each COS Board Meeting at 9:00 PM EST and as needed in between Board meetings. 3. COS Website Development News
On Line Mentor List Photos/Slide Show
Pat and Mimi to follow up on developing a mentor list for use both on the website and the Welcome Packet, see below. Categories are to include topics of interest to exhibitors, pet families and other performance competitors. We would like to know the timing of the COS webpage rollout, so that we can have input or suggestions for the design. The idea is to make the front page of the COS site as user-friendly as possible for new members, or potential new members who are interested in joining. It was suggested that we add a link to the new site for people who would like to change their address. The address change information would go directly to Earline.
COS Board Meeting Minutes
Page 13
The Southern Cavalier
Also, the suggestion has been made that this Mentor section be made available "For Members Only", in order to get the full benefits of the club. This would help create an incentive for people to join. 4. Welcome Packet for New Members Pat is going to work along with Mimi to adapt her current AKC Club Welcome Letter for mailing, as well as for use on the new COS site, using the new COS website as a guide for design and formatting. This new Welcome letter can be sent to new members via email, or by regu-lar postal service. 5. Breeder Involvement and Support
Reach Out To Individual Breeders Award/Gift for Signing Up The Most New Members
We are all going to identify the most active breeders within our area and then reach out to these individuals personally, and ask them to support our membership drive. We need to ask breeders to pay for memberships for their puppy buyers, including the COS membership. Discussion about fees and expenses associated with having a litter and dual registering dogs. We would like to develop an award for the COS, perhaps a perpetual trophy to be awarded at the Annual Meeting each year, along with a gift of thanks from the COS. The name of the award is still to be determined. Need board approval for establishing the award and funds? 6. Targeting Under-Represented Geographic Areas
Local Events
Discussion about targeting geographic areas that have potential in terms of recruiting new members, including Florida, Northern Virginia, and South Carolina area. Our traditional Fun Matches, are used to help promote our judging program, and could be held in conjunction with regu-lar Show weekends. Families with pet Cavaliers may be more interested in Fun Days, including pool parties with games, heart clinic, picnics and barbeques. Pam Taub holds a very successful Fun Day every year, and will be recruiting for new members at her next event. Pam is going to share the ideas which have made her annual event a success. Discussion of the need to hold more regular events in order to recruit new members, and retain current members. Fun Days offer a lim-ited opportunity, in this respect. 7. Additional Opportunities Earline will identify those COS members that did not renew their membership and get us a list. We will divide this list on a state by state basis, and contact these people individually. Furthermore, Earline pointed out that now that show premiums are available on-line, many Club members are no longer members outside their region. Howard will develop a list of New Transfers, people who have recently purchased a puppy but are not club members. This list will need more filtering, and Caryna will work on that aspect of the list. Once we have these contacts, we can call these new owners to encourage them to join, and send them a Welcome Letter. 8. COS Membership Directory Howard and Caryna are working up the format and cost of a membership directory. Howard has assembled and formatted the re-cords and will email the file to Caryna. Caryna will then take the file to the printer in order to obtain a cost estimate. We will still need a cover design. This directory can either be mailed out to individuals, handed out at the shows, or printed off a home computer, just like a show premium. Meeting Adjourned at 10:47 PM
