CausewayEXchange is a Platform that aims to foster greater collaboration between Singaporeans and Malaysians through artistic, social and lifestyle activities. It aims to increase support and expand the audience base for the arts and culture in both countries, as well as to facilitate greater opportunities and awareness for placement and exchange programmes for the arts and culture industries of both countries.

Testimonials from 2012 Partcipants“Though Singaporeans and Malaysians are the

same racially, the content of our theatre showed that we deal with political and social issues differently. CEX is a great platform to see how things are on the other side from ‘this’ side..”

Morgan, Indian Lawyers

“CEX was the perfect platform for me as a Malaysian

writer working in Singapore to launch my travel book. This ‘in between’ space between Singapore and Malaysia and our prickly relationship with each other has a rich and complex history - which provides a fertile ground for ideas and perspectives.”

Sharon Cheah, Malaysia Bagus

“Causeway Exchange was fun! I enjoyed seeing some of the exhibits

and performances showcasing the diverse and vibrant cultures of Malaysia and Singapore. We (The GoodFlers) were certainly proud to be a part of it especially sharing good humor and friendly banter with our neighbour we love to hate, Singapore. How?”

Greetings of welcome to our new partner, CausewayEXchange festival, our first ever festival-within-a-festival collaboration in Penang.

Now into its fourth year, we are confident CausewayEXchange continues to provide an artistic, social and lifestyle tourism platform to foster greater and more synergistic collaboration between Malaysians and our Singapore neighbours. We hope that the partnership between George Town with CausewayEXchange will create not just greater awareness of theatre performance, visual arts, literary arts and music but also make them more accessible and affordable to individuals and communities all over the world and from all levels of society.

Congratulations to the George Town Festival and CausewayEXchange organising teams, partners, sponsors and contributors on what we hope to be a sustained and mutually beneficial bilateral relationship.

Message from His Excellency High Commissioner of the Republic of Singapore to Malaysia

I congratulate CausewayEXchange for its creative collaboration with our Malaysian counterparts to increase artistic, social and business activities between Singapore and Malaysia. The two countries share unique historical experiences and people-to-people relations. I am pleased that CausewayEXchange is maintaining such links through a regular and sustained avenue for our peoples to learn more about each other’s ways of life even as it allows young artists from both countries to strengthen their cultural interactions and forge stronger people-to-people ties. I am confident that Singapore-Malaysia relations would continue to benefit from CausewayEXchange’s efforts in promoting cultural diplomacy through its wide range of activities. I wish CausewayEXchange and its partners and supporters every success.

I am truly excited to bring CausewayEXchange to Penang and run it in conjunction with George Town Festival, making it the first ever festival within a festival in Penang.

CausewayEXchange, now in its forth year, has indeed come a long way. From a simple idea over a cup of coffee it has indeed grown to become a platform where artistes from both sides of the Causeway can get together to share, collaborate and produce joint works. Never did I imagine I would bring an Arts Festival back to my home town, Penang.

This year we are doing things a little differently. For the first time, the festival will be staged at various locations around George Town and we have included a club entertainment after party into our line up which features four female DJ’s from Singapore. This we believe would be unique not only to CEX but also to GTF.

We have been fortunate this year to have some really strong names in the industry. In our line-up is the ever-famous Comedian, Kumar whose performance sold out within a week it being announced in George Town. Siti Khalijah Zainal an award-winning actress will be performing in “Best Of” by the Necessary Stage. Also performing are poets Cyril Wong, who has several awards under his belt and Rafaat Haji Hamzah, a household name in the Singapore television and theatre scene. Visual Artiste Justin Lee, one of the best contemporary artistes working in Singapore today, will also be showcasing his art. They are just to name a few.

I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to the GTF team for sharing in my dream of bringing CausewayEXchange and running it in conjunction with George Town

Festival. I would also like to thank the Chief Minister’s office in Penang and the Singapore High Commission in Malaysia for their advice and support.

My heartfelt gratitude to my sponsors and partners, friends and colleagues who have stood behind me for the past 4 years, and most importantly the audience who have played a big role in the growth of CausewayEXchange.

I do hope you will enjoy what Singapore has to offer you, we look forward to sharing Malaysia’s best in Singapore next year.

This foreword cannot contain my enthusiasm about this year’s programming, but I should share something about the spirit of this city, George Town, and the spirit of its people.

The city, its culture, and its people have inspired some really fascinating and exciting projects: a week-long urban residency in George Town, a photographic exhibition about a kongsi’s celebrations of the Nine Emperor Gods, a scent and film pairing with Penang-specific films, a dance performance inspired by five-foot ways, a Design DNA George Town workshop, and a range of site-specific installations and art projects continuing last year’s amazingly popular Ernest Zacharevic’s Mirrors of George Town.

George Town Festival MessageIt’s been an incredible journey. By all measures, we’re still a really young festival, but we’ve been positioned as a regional destination and event, and have received over 200 proposals from 45 countries this year.

It is humbling to know that we will be mentioned in the same breath as some of the most prestigious performing venues in the world. It is also encouraging to see local communities rallying to be part of our programming: music, food, literature, performing arts, photography, cross-cultural exchanges, academic symposiums, and even a magazine-reading exhibition!

CausewayEXchange adds a different layer of programming as a ‘festival within a festival’, something that is new to GTF. This exchange programme offers a wide variety of events for the people in Penang to experience, and more importantly, to be inspired. We are confident that this exchange will set the stage for greater future collaborations.

I am truly grateful for the support from YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng, Shawn Lourdusamy and the whole CEX team, the people of Penang, my dedicated team, volunteers, friends, partners, sponsors and other private individuals who have supported us through the years.

A Night of Comedy with Kumarwith Kavin Jay and Jason Leong as opening actsCausewayEXchange opens with stand-up comedian, actor, host and drag queen Kumar, a household name in Singapore who came to fame through comedy shows in nightclubs, stage, television, and plays. Expect a full hour of irreverent, incisive, hilarious and no-holds-barred jokes. Malaysians Kevin Jay & Dr Jason Leong start off as the opening acts!

8 CausewayEXchange 2013

Page 11: CausewayEXchange 2013

KAVIN JAY has been voted the grumpiest comedian in Malaysia today for his love/hate relationship with his life, love and country. Born with a severe disability (being Indian) he was always destined to be angry and easily irritated, putting that negative energy on the stage to positive effects. He complains about everything, so that you dont have to. Known in the underground scenes and open mike spots, he has since performed with international acts such as Dave Callan (Ire), Pierre Hollins (UK), Vir Das (IND) JJ Whitehead (CAN), Chris Wainhouse (AUS), Rob Brown (AUS), Paul Ogata (US) and Steven Grant (UK) and countless Malaysian stand up comics.

As each tropical night descends upon us, how conscious are we of the dense darkness that lies beyond the safety of our lighted homes where the irrational and unspeakable lurk? If you wish to feel chills of fear run up and down your spine, join writer and storyteller Verena Tay as she recounts tales of ghosts and pontianaks that she created with surprising twists to bring age-old motifs into the present. Satori BluesSatori Blues is Cyril Wong’s longest and only Zen-inspired poem to date. The poem is a response to writings by teachers of Buddhism and post-Buddhist philosophies. Composed as a stream of thought - at times epigrammatic, philosophical, fragmented, even exclamatory - words become a movement within a space of mediation, as well as a yearning towards truth and clarity. The poetry reading is followed by a moderated dialogue session for poets and aspiring poets.

“Poem On Autumn Leaves” is a landmark classic in Hainanese Opera, similar in stature with “The Butterfly Lovers” to Yue Opera, and “Fairy Couple” to Huang Mei Opera.

The original script, written by Chen Cheng Gui, revolves around the love triangle between Wen Dong He, Jiang Yu Rui, and his cousin. The play cumulated to a happy ending, with Wen and Jiang coming together, while his cousin was conferred the title of seventh concubine.

After the Cultural Revolution, a group of script-writers, including Lin Ju, Ge Tie, and Shi Ping, came together to rework the script, by removing the role of the cousin. Subsequently, Dian Han managed to polish it up, focusing on Wen and Jiang’s ultimately futile attempts to prevent the Emperor from forcefully taking Jiang as his concubine. Tragedy struck at the end when the couple took their lives by jumping into the lake.

It was this sublime re-writing masterstroke that eventually elevated “Poem On Autumn Leaves” to a landmark classic.

Performed in Hainanese, with Chinese and English surtitles.
