2. Definition
Cause and effect essays are concerned with why things happen (causes) and what happens as a result (effects). Cause and effect is a common method of organizing and discussing ideas.
In this kind of essay, the aim is to explain the causes (reasons) or the effects (results) of an event or situation.
e.x. Causes of air pollution (multiple factors leading to air pollution).
e.x. Effects of watching too much TV (many effects of a situation).
3. Definition
There may be several causes or effects of a situation. However, in a student essay, it is advisable to keep the number of major points to 2 or 3, which form separate developmental paragraphs.
Cause/effect organization might be used for answering typical test questions: For instance, Discuss he effects of Global Warming
4. Organization for cause/effect order
Two main ways for putting ideas in order:
Block organization
Chain Organization

Discuss

The order of them are not critical, the point is to discuss each one together as a block.
Only causes, only effects or both
Important ideas separated by paragraphs. Its purpose is to conclude one section and introduce another(transition paragraphs)
For long and complex topics
6. Chain Organization
One event causes a second event, a second event causes a third event and so on
Causes and effects linked to each other in a chain.
For topics whose causes and affects are too closely linked to be separated
7. Multiple causes-->effect

  • Thesis statement: Air pollution is caused by the following factors: exhaust gases from cars, uncontrolled factory releases, and burning of low-quality coal for heating.
