The Denton Record-Chroniclewas lucky enough to grab afew minutes with the winnersof the first annual Cats andDogs (and other pets, too)Contest, despite theirincreasingly-busy scheduleof interviews, press confer-ences, photo sessions andfrenzied fans.
Leo, our grand prize winnerand 2011 cover model, wasdogged in his determinationto grant us a few minutes ofhis time.
DRC: You know we have toask the question…how didyou get your name? Leo: “Well, my ownersthought I looked like a lion,but I just don’t see it. Imean, king of the jungle.That fits. But the wholehair-thing around the face?Call me skeptical.”
DRC: Can you tell us whatmakes Leo, Leo?Leo: “Where should Ibegin? I was born on the 4thof July…I love the paradethey have for me, by the way.
I love people. Really lovethem. I think I’m a prettylaid back guy, but I am theboss dog. The top dog. Anddon’t get me started onsquirrels, okay?”
DRC: What do you like todo for fun?Leo: “Well, it’s more likemy hobby, my pastime...maybe my obsession.Squirrels. It’s my mission inlife. To eradicate them fromthe world. They’re just sodarn chatty, and they havethe nerve to bring theirbushy little tails into myback yard. What’s up withthat? Other than squirrels,it’s just the usual…wadingin the pond and hangingwith Blue.”
DRC: Who’s Blue?Leo: “You media types areall alike. I’d rather notanswer any questions aboutmy personal life, and justconcentrate on my career.”
DRC: Can you tell us whatyour perfect evening wouldlook like?
Leo: “A quiet dinner partyat home with friends and myfuzzy, squeaky cat toy. Filetmignon on the menu, ofcourse. I’d love to breakmilkbones with Rin TinTin…he really blazed thepath for all of us who cameafter him. And, JenniferLopez. Woof, woof, if youknow what I mean. My finalguest would probably be theDalai Lama. I mean, thinkof the dinner conversation!We could wrap up theevening with a showing of“Up”. I love and hate thatmovie at the same time,man. Squirrels again.”
DRC: Do you do tricks? Leo: “I’m a little offendedby the question. If you mean‘am I multi-talented’, thenyes. I am incredible at Hideand Seek. You can run, butyou can’t hide from Leo!”
DRC: Is there anything elsewe should know about you?Leo: “You know, every dayis my favorite day. I’m real-ly a happy guy and I love mylife!”

The Denton Record-Chroniclecontinues its profiles of Catsand Dogs (and other pets,too) winners with the tworunners up.
Zoe was adopted from theDenton Animal Shelter at theend of March, and will cele-brate her first birthday onAugust 31. A Lorie in her for-mer life, Zoe was the quiet,reserved little lady in theshelter…just wanting to sit ona lap and be loved. Stillwaters run deep, they say.Once she came home, hertrue colors came out. “I’mstill lovable and affectionate,”
she said. “But I’m a paws-onkind of gal, too. It’s all true. Ichew on anything and every-thing. I chew on things myowners haven’t even foundyet. It’s a real talent! I wrestlewith my sister and I live forbugging the cats! I also dig. Ijust can’t help it.”
Zoe credits her new familyfor her big contest win. “Ilove, love, love my big sisterMandy, but she gets a littlerough for me sometimes. I’vegot to learn how to take it aswell as I dish it out! I’d alsolike to thank my BostonTerrier cousins, Kima and
Luna, and my big lab-mixcousin, Jonsi, from Alabama.Have you ever driven toHuntsville, Alabama? It’s along drive! And, I didn’t evenget to go to the beach!”
DRC: In closing, can you tellour readers anything elseabout you?Zoe: “I love cheese! Andthose rawhide chewy-things!I love any movies that have adoor bell or a barking dog…but it confuses me some-times! And, I’m not verygood at any tricks yet- still awork in progress.”
Mr. Park was very disappoint-ed he wasn’t the grand prizewinner and refused our repeat-ed requests for an interview,but he did consent to dictateanswers for the special sectionto his personal assistant-Melody Specht Kelly.
1. I got my name when myMum, Mehitabel, took mybrothers and I on a night walkthrough the park where we’dbeen born. My brotherschased moths and talked overtheir plans to move in on Dr.Barbara Cox, who lived acrossthe street. I, The Cat With NoName, continued to search formy true identity. My mumrepeatedly ignored my plead-ings about my real name andmerely told me to look for asign. So I did, and hiddenbehind overgrown shrubbery
was my sign: McKenna Park.I turned to tell Mum my dis-covery, but she was gone. I wasalone, but nameless no more. Islipped confidently throughthe night, knowing destinymust have great plans for a catcalled Mr. McKenna Park.
2. Regarding my favorite hob-bies or pastimes, I simply keepto a strict routine: morningmilk on the DRC. I just lovereading the blotter! Followedby meditation, bird and butter-fly watching in the afternoonon the metal glider, more med-itation, then dinner followedby watching that Diva Dog,Lil’L, chase balls. Howridiculous dogs are! Finally,the Colbert Report, followedby more meditation.
3. When asked to describe
myself, I say: I’m a hip cat, afunkadelic kind of cat. I lovechillin’ to tracks. Nothingbeats tapping a paw to TheStray Cats. I love CosmicCatnip from Petsmart, but Imust make it clear, I do notinhale. My favorite moviesare: Alice in Wonderland(who’s the cooler cat- JohnnyDepp or the Cheshire Cat?),the musical Cats (I purr all thetunes!), and of course, Cat on aHot Tin Roof (I could jump offthe roof with Maggie anytime!). My biggest pet peeve ishaving to live with the divadog, Lil’L, who treats me likea chew toy, and those other twocats- the children of the night-Mouse and Kate. However, Idigress! I only want to beremembered for one thing: theaura of serenity that surroundsme wherever I am.
