AP classes are not offered at Catlin Gabel. Students often opt to take the exams. In spring 2012, 56 students took 91 exams, and 96% scored 3 or higher.

2012–13 School ProfileCatlin Gabel is an independent, co-educational, non-sectarian day school serving students from preschool through grade 12. Founded in 1859, the school has a total of 753 students. The student-teacher ratio in the Upper School is 8-to-1. This year, there are 309 Upper School students.

ADMISSION

Competitive, based on previous school record, entrance examinations, recommendations, personal qualifications, and interview. Approximately one-quarter of the Upper School students receive financial aid.

CURRICULUM AND GRADING POLICY

Catlin Gabel offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. All seniors work beyond core requirements in two to four academic disciplines (English is required). Students may choose from a variety of elective offerings in history, English, and the sciences; the school does not offer standard AP courses.

Catlin Gabel’s educational philosophy de-emphasizes letter grades, and student academic work is evaluated primarily through frequent conferences with faculty and through narrative reports. Letter grades (A+ through F) are given once per year in yearlong courses; courses lasting for one semester are graded at semester’s end. We do not rank our students, nor do we calculate and report a GPA on student transcripts.

DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF THE SCHOOL

In addition to the challenging academic program, Catlin Gabel students participate in a full array of arts and athletic programs throughout the year. In addition, through a comprehensive laptop program, computer technology is accessible to every Upper School student.

Senior Projects Every student is required to engage in a senior project (internship). Students complete 80 hours of work on their projects and make a presentation at the end of the internship period. The senior project is a natural extension of Catlin Gabel’s experientially based curriculum. Students have worked at nonprofits and for profit organizations in a variety of fields from alternative energy to advertising, medicine, research, commercial baking, performing arts, TV and radio broadcasting, construction, design, early childhood education, and veterinary care.

FIRST Robotics Team Robotics is an extracurricular program that gets students involved with real-world engineering, computer science, design, math, and applied physics. The team and project-management skills learned here last a lifetime. Participants in the Upper School program design robots for entry in FIRST robotics competitions. Catlin Gabel’s robotics team is one of the top teams in the state and is the only Oregon team to have qualified for the FIRST World Championships the last five out of six years.

Global Online Academy Catlin Gabel is a founding member of the Global Online Academy, a consortium of the world’s leading independent schools whose mission is to translate into online classrooms the intellectually rigorous programs and excellent teaching that are hallmarks of its member schools. Courses taken through the Global Online Academy will be noted on a student’s transcript.

PLACE Planning and Leadership Across City Environments is Catlin Gabel’s unique urban studies program. This interdisciplinary program, open to Catlin Gabel students and to students throughout the local area, is experiential, project-based, and progressive. Students collaborate with community leaders to explore a variety of topics focusing on how we relate to our urban environment through smart planning and effective leadership.

Knight Scholars The Knight Family Scholars Program launched in fall 2011. Funded by a multi-million dollar gift from Nike chairman Phil Knight and his wife, Penny, the innovative program’s goal is to bring a cadre of academically exceptional students with notable potential in leadership, athletics, and service to the Catlin Gabel Upper School. Students selected as Knight Family Scholars receive comprehensive financial aid based on merit to defray the cost of attendance. Students enrolled in the Knight Family Scholars Program engage in Catlin Gabel’s highly regarded coursework and an additional Knight Family Scholars Program seminar every semester. The focus of the seminar is to prepare leaders for the 21st century.

Experiential Learning We value experiential education, the idea that people learn by doing, not simply by being told. This means that students learn through real and direct exposure to places, events, and people. All students participate in the annual Winterim program, taking part in a variety of learning activities in Portland or further afield.

Community Service Community service is a key component of Catlin Gabel culture. Upper School students are required to undertake 15 hours a year of community service, and many exceed this requirement.
