“Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.” -Matthew 7:12

The Golden Rule, from the Matthew’s Gospel was the final line from today’s gospel reading. How fitting during this time of Lent that we see a great portion of Jesus’s teachings simplified into one line. In its simplicity, it defines how we are to treat one another.

However, when we practice the Golden Rule, we often misinterpret or misremem-ber its true meaning. Often we defend our behavior or explain the way we treat someone by how they have treated us either in that particular situation or at some time in the past. We hold on to grudges or hurt feelings and let them ultimately define our actions.

We must remember that Jesus wants us to treat everyone the way we WANT to be treated, not HOW we have been treated. In my morning prayer group this week, we discussed a quote that I used to have on my desk about character:

“Your true character is revealed by the clarity of your convictions, the choices you make, and the promises you keep. Hold strongly to your principles and refuse to follow the currents of convenience. What you say and do defines who you are, and who you are…you are forever.”

I always emphasize the last sentence of that quote. You may have certain thoughts and feelings, but those do not define who you are. Your words and actions are what defines you. You may not be able to control what happens to you, but you can control how you respond and how you react. Handle with ill-temperedness and you may be defined as a grouch…or worse. But handle with grace and hu-mility, and people will start to see Christ working through you…what could be better?!?

Next week is Spring Break! Please have a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable week off.

Pax Vobiscum!

The Worldof

The students and staff of Sacred Heart celebrated Dr. Seuss’ Read Across America this week. Deco-rating doors, dressing up, students participating in the Bingo sheet activities, and of course, reading Dr. Seuss books, were some of the ways we enjoyed our time celebrating. However, Dr. Seuss not only inspires reading but faith in God and ourselves, which is the real celebration.

“Don’t give up. I believe in you all. A person’s a person no matter how small.” -Dr. Seuss
