We shouldn’t just go out and serve: we have to first see and understand, engage our minds, to see what the real needs are. Then we need to serve with lively, ignited, hearts. No-body wants to be served by a grump – that is demeaning. When we serve with our minds and hearts, we truly give of ourselves. But this doesn’t come naturally or readily. As parents, guardians and teachers of our children, we need to engage their minds to ask questions about what they are trying to do, to go beyond the obvious and ask ‘what is really happening here and what is the best I can offer?’ Then we need to inspire them to act in a way that feels loving. They may need to learn that even when we don’t feel loving, we can act that way and, surprise, surprise, the loving feelings may follow. When we do these things, we are modelling to our children, the best way of serving: with minds, hearts and hands working together in love. Loving Father, you desire us to serve as best we can. Dear Parents, Care-givers, Friends and Supporters of Catholic Education, Staff and Students,

Engaging Minds, Igniting Hearts, Serving Others In Catholic Schools, there is a deep commitment to teach and inspire our students about the importance of serving others. Of course, that is what good Christians do…but it doesn’t come easily. As you consider the motto for the forthcoming Catholic Schools Week, other activities have to come first.

Show me how I can use my mind and heart to

show your love in the way I serve others. I ask this in Jesus’ name confident that you will hear me.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK

(26TH JULY – 1ST AUGUST 2014) This annual event is held to

promote the special ethos of

Catholic schools and to highlight

the great things that take place in

Catholic schools every day. The

theme for this year‟s celebrations is:

Engaging Minds. Igniting Hearts.

Serving Others.

Catholic education strives to make a difference in the

lives of those in our schools and in the wider

community by challenging young people to live out

the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential

as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of

society.

During Catholic Education Week 2015, Catholic

education communities across Queensland are invited

to celebrate and share how they are Engaging Minds.

Igniting Hearts. Serving Others.

There are 299 Catholic schools in Queensland that

educate around 147,000 students and employ almost

18,000 teachers and staff, and most will celebrate

Catholic Education Week in some way.

Our schedule for celebration which includes our 90

Years Anniversary is as follow:

Friday 24 July

Assembly - Year 5 presented a short PowerPoint on

their findings regarding rubbish data they have

collected.

Monday 27 July

8.35am - Assembly – Sr Denise Hinton (Ex-St Anne‟s

Teacher) to address the students, parents and staff.

An Adoption of Grandmotherly and Grandfatherly

figures will take place.

Page 4: Catholic Primary School · Catholic Primary School Continuing the journey through partnership 24 July 2015 Newsletter Number 17/2015 Dear Parents, Care-givers, Friends and Supporters

Tuesday 28 July

Anniversary Picture Plates to be completed with a

member of the Leadership Team by students who

ordered these.

Thursday 30 July

9.00am - Mass followed by speeches in the hall, the

singing of a hymn by the students to those gathered.

Miss Jeffcoat will also be addressing the gathered

people. This will be followed by the cutting of the

anniversary cake and then a BYO picnic style lunch.

12.00pm - The NED Show – will be in the hall

for the students. This is a show which promotes the

values we espouse. NED is a loveable cartoon

character whose name is an acronym for Never give

up, Encourage others, and Do your best. Teachers

love that NED is simple, relatable and kid-focused.”

Friday 31 July

8.35am Awards presented for Challenge Cup at

Assembly

LATE ARRIVAL TO SCHOOL Our children‟s actions are an indication of their habits

later in life. It is important to teach the children life

skills and model these for them. A key to success is

punctuality. No employer will tolerate staff

continually arriving late for work. From a school

perspective, late arrival impacts not only your child,

but other children, as it disrupts the class. During the

first ten minutes at school, much work is discussed by

the teachers to orients students to the day ahead.

Important instructions are issued. If late this means

their day has been made more difficult as they try and

catch up. Please ensure your child arrives on time so

they have enough time to be organised.

NATIONAL EXCELLENCE IN

TEACHING AWARDS The P & F has received information about the 2015

National Excellence in Teaching Awards. These

awards recognise inspirational and dedicated teachers

in our schools. If you would like to nominate one of

our wonderful teachers at St Anne‟s, you can

APRE NEWS CONGRATULATIONS Last Sunday Noah and his sisters Taylor and Chloe

were baptised at St Luke‟s Church. From all reports it

was a moving ceremony and a great day was had by

all. Congratulations Noah, Taylor and Chloe!

SAD NEWS Last week I advised the following sad news of the

passing of Fr Peter Greene. Some of you may know

him from this area many years ago. Fr Peter was an

inspiration to all who knew him and to his family

whom he loved very much. Fr Peter was laid to rest

last week and I ask that you continue to keep Fr Peter

and his family in your prayers.

Eternal Rest Grant Unto Him O Lord,

And May Perpetual Light Shine Upon Him

Forever. Amen.

NAIDOC WEEK On Monday a number St Anne‟s representatives

attended the Mackay District NAIDOC Catholic Mass.

This was a celebration where schools around Mackay

acknowledged and honoured the Aboriginal and

Torres Strait Islander peoples. In particular those who

share and preserve indigenous culture and traditions,

reflecting the 2015 NAIDOC theme of “We All Stand

On Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect, and Celebrate”.

To acknowledge the ground that all schools stand on,

representatives from each school added a container of

soil. The soil from each school was mixed together,

representing all those present coming together as one

– in one land, one in spirit, one in faith – united

together in God‟s love. On the conclusion of the mass

Mrs Coral Way presented each school with the

following plaque

to place

somewhere to

recognise the

sacred ground on

which we walk

Page 5: Catholic Primary School · Catholic Primary School Continuing the journey through partnership 24 July 2015 Newsletter Number 17/2015 Dear Parents, Care-givers, Friends and Supporters

each day. We are still looking for the best location

for this plaque.

CURRICULUM NEWS WELCOME We warmly welcome to our School next week, Olivia

Mansfield who is an ex-student, as she commences

volunteering in preparation for her continuing studies

in Education.

WHITSUNDAY VOICES FIELD TRIP Last week our Years 2 to 6 Classes attended

Whitsunday Voices. The students enjoyed this

experience. Thanks to the Whitsunday Anglican

School Foundation who gave us a $100 „Road to

Reading‟ Travel Subsidy and to our incredible P&F

Association who donated $1000.00 to defray overall

costs. We really appreciate this assistance.

I‟m sure both the P & F Association and Whitsunday

Anglican School Foundation would love to hear from

you if you would like to express your thanks at their

very kind donations which have assisted your child or

children.

CHALLENGE CUP 2015 It was a wonderful sea of blue and gold as our St.

Anne‟s students and families attended the 10th Annual

Challenge Cup in Yeppoon. All students should be

proud of their achievements, with the St. Anne‟s

Cruisaders ranking 12th in the football competition,

and our netball team, the St Anne‟s Diamonds, ranked

5th in their pool and 20th overall.

A special thanks to the families, coaches and teachers

who helped support these teams over this event. We

could not have done it without you. Well played,

teams!

Presentations will be made on Assembly, Friday 31

July.
