Parish Directory

The distinguishing marks of the Godhead were always clearly present in the very mystery of the Lord’s incarnation. But today’s feast especially shows and reveals that God came into a human body so that mortal man, who is continually in confusion and darkness, should not lose through ignorance what he merited to have and possess through grace alone. Today the Magus, the wise man, finds weeping in a crib him whom he sought for shining in the stars. Today the wise man reveres clearly revealed in swaddling clothes him who he had long patiently awaited unseen in the heavens. Today the wise man ponders in profound amazement over what he sees there: heaven on earth, earth on heaven, man in God, God in man, and him who the whole universe cannot contain, confined in a tiny body. And immediately on seeing, he professes with mystical gifts that he believes and does not argue: he acknowledges God with frankincense, the King with gold, the myrrh with mortal one destined to die. So it is that the Gentile, who was last, has become first: for then the belief of the nations began from the faith of the Magi.

The Lord and ruler is coming: kingship is his, and government and power.

Entrance Antiphon

In the time of King Herod after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea wise men from the East came to Jerusalem asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he enquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.” Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

Entrance Song

Let us pray (grateful for the glory revealed today through God made man). Father of light, unchanging God, today you reveal to men of faith the resplendent fact of the Word made flesh. Your light is strong, your love is near; draw us beyond the limits which this world imposes, to the life where your Spirit makes all life complete. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Response 6.00pm & 10.30am

Surely you have already heard of the commission of God’s grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, in former generations this mystery was not made known to humanity as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Parish Notices 4th January 1903

Meanwhile, Jesus, I wait for you. I am tired of my long wanderings, I will return to cast myself on your bosom, to rest and restore my strength for the long road ahead. Jesus, I, your little lamb, am coming back to you; prepare some food, for I am hungry. Above all I must beware of being superficial or inconstant, obsessed with learning or new things, new books, new systems, new people. I must watch what I say about these matters. I must take everything into consideration and follow with delight the ascending movement of Catholic culture, but all in its due proportion. ‘Not too much of anything.’ I will always remember some wise sayings of the good and most learned author of The Imitation of Christ; ‘A humble knowledge of your self is a surer way to God than profound learning. It is not learning that is at fault, nor is the simple knowledge of anything blameworthy, because it is good in itself and ordained by God; but a good conscience and a virtuous life are always to be preferred . . . ‘Certainly on the day of judgment we shall not be asked what we have read but what we have done; not how well we have spoken but how virtuously we have lived . . . ‘He is truly great who is humble and thinks nothing of the highest honours. He is truly wise who despises as dung all earthly things, that his reward may be Jesus Christ himself. And he is truly learned who does the will of God and renounces his own will.’
