What you Will learnTheologicalreflectionisaformidabletool in practical theology, and is of exceptional power in the formation of leaders and practitioners. A theological understanding of dialogue and a vision of a learning community inspired by the mission of the Church are foundational to a distinctiveCatholicpedagogy.Someof the many questions which will be addressed are: What conditions are needed to enable a more explicit dialogue between Catholic faith and the diverse cultures and lives of both students and teachers in a Catholic learning community? How might leadership engage learning communities in dialogue?

The symposium offers delegates the opportunity to engage with fellow leaders in education, along with bishops and theologians on the crucial topic of Catholic leadership, mission and identity. The methodology consists of a dynamic synthesis between theory, cutting edge research and practical application to school contexts.

Delegatesatthesymposiumareoffered insights into contemporary secular culture, together with examples of outstanding peer leadership practice with regard to Catholic mission and identity which they can adapt to their own school contexts.

EDUCATOR’S GUIDE TO

Catholic Curriculum

BBI - THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION MISSION AND EDUCATION PROJECT

Trish Hindmarsh

What difference can the Catholic identity of a school make to the way it approaches curriculum? How can the curriculum be ‘life-giving’ for students in the way Jesus intended when he promised ‘fullness of life’ for all? How can Religious Education, the Humanities, the Arts, Maths, Sciences and Technology, Health/PE and Vocational Education be enriched by Catholic faith and life? How can all subjects work together to create an ‘ecology’ of learning that can help students discern wise life pathways? How can their years of learning the various subjects in school classrooms help them become a ‘leaven’ in the dough of society and a ‘light’ for the world?

This Guide offers practical curriculum strategies and school-focussed examples from educators in Catholic schools around Australia and New Zealand who are attempting to address these questions.

THE EDUCATOR’S GUIDE SERIES • The Mission and Education Project of BBI-TAITE (The Australian Institute of Theological Education) is

divided into two series, the Exploratory Studies Series, prepared particularly for Catholic education leaders, and the Educator’s Guides prepared for teachers and school leaders. Both series deal with the Catholic school as agent of God’s mission.

• The Educator’s Guides are designed to provide easily accessible information on mission-in-practice issues as these are being experienced in Catholic education.

• The Educator’s Guides are written by some of Australia’s leading Catholic educators, who have accepted the challenge of writing at an introductory level in their fields of expertise.

• Excellent mission-in-practice work is currently being done by teachers in Catholic schools – the Educator’s Guides acknowledge and celebrate this work in a colourful and creative way, featuring photos’, icons, maps, drawings, discussion boxes and original artwork, providing invaluable resources for teachers.

This guide deals beautifully with the really important questions about our Catholic schools. What does being Catholic involve? What shape should a Catholic school take in today’s secular and pluralist world? How does being Catholic impact the teaching of the humanities, the arts, the sciences, maths, health and physical education? What does it mean for the teaching of religious education? How should our Catholic schools deal with the issue of religious pluralism? This book is clear, well-written, thoughtful and thought-provoking. It is full of ideas and examples. It will be a great resource for teachers and for all those involved in Catholic education.

Reverend Professor Denis Edwards Australian Catholic University

It is with great pleasure that I present the second of the Educator’s Guides by Dr. Trish Hindmarsh. Her work is essentially a celebration of the splendid efforts educators from across Australia and New Zealand are making to integrate faith and the learning areas of the curriculum.

Those who allow themselves to be attuned to the project which Jesus began with his small band of followers so long ago – to make present and to nurture God’s dream for creation - will recognise the genuine feel for that dream which is reflected in these pages.

TRISH HINDMARSH Dr Trish Hindmarsh is the former Director of Catholic Education in Tasmania and has been a teacher and leader in Catholic schools in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia. Her doctorate centred on approaches to ecological education in Catholic schools. Since retirement in 2014, she has continued to take an active interest in education, ecology, Church renewal and social justice. She is a member of the Catholic Earthcare Australia Council, the Tasmanian Catholic Justice and Peace Commission and the St Vincent de Paul Society. She has a particular commitment to the mission of Catholic education to bring Christ’s message of liberation and truth alive for students and their families.
