Join Hands Day is a national day of service endorsed by Fraternals and is designed to strengthen relationships across generations. The goal is to bring together youth and adults through helpful projects meant to benefit the community. This event is officially celebrated on the first Saturday of May each year, but these types of projects may occur at any time during the year. Performed as a test site, from District X, Society No. 16 Ennis enlisted their Juniors to work with Texas Ramp Project (texasramps.org). With team lead direction from skilled Rotarians, the job was to build two ramps in Ennis for two elderly individuals unable to use the steps at their homes. These ramps literally open up a whole new world for the previously home- bound. The State Office would like to offer this as a State-wide activity for all Districts and Societies to embrace and consider. Originally slated for the “official” day of May 5th, a deluge of rain and wind the day before rendered the sites too wet. Not skipping a beat, all those involved happily moved it to the following Saturday, May 12th. Approximately 15 Juniors learned the finer points of ramp building, and working together with their leaders, finished the build in a little more than 4 hours! They now know how to use a power drill! Good job, Ennis Juniors! More pictures on page 21. Texas Ramp Project builds in 200 counties in Texas. There is an existing backlog in these counties for ramps to be built. *The following poem was read at the funeral of retired State President Geraldine Nekuza.

The Dash by Linda Ellis I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone from the beginning… to the end. He noted that first came her date of birth and spoke the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on Earth… and now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own; the cars… the house… the cash, what matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard… are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left, that can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough to consider what’s true and real, and always try to understand the way other people feel. And be less quick to anger, and show appreciation more, and love the people in our lives like we’ve never loved before. If we treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile… remembering that this special dash might only last a little while. So, when your eulogy’s being read with your life’s actions to rehash…

Would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent your dash?

    Mary, Mother of the Church

This year, the Catholic Church has a new entry into its liturgical calendar and an additional way for us to celebrate our love for Mary, our Blessed Mother. The Prefect for the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments issued the following statement on February 11, 2018: “Having attentively considered how greatly the promotion of this devotion might encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious and faithful, as well as a growth of genuine Marian piety, Pope Francis has decreed that the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, should be inscribed in the Roman Calendar on the Monday after Pentecost and be now celebrated every year. This celebration will help us to remember that growth in the Christian life must be anchored to the Mystery of the Cross, to the oblation of Christ in the Eucharistic Banquet and to the Mother of the Redeemer and Mother of the Redeemed, the Virgin who makes her offering to God.”

Actually, this liturgical celebration honoring our Blessed Mother as Mother of the Church has been in the Roman Missal since 1975 as a votive Mass option, but the recently issued decree now inserts this celebration into the universal Church’s liturgy as a memorial on the fixed date of the Monday after Pentecost. As stated in the decree, Saint Pope Paul VI “declared the Blessed Virgin Mary as ‘Mother of the Church, that is to say of all Christian people, the faithful as well as the pastors, who call her the most loving Mother’ and established that ‘the Mother of God should be further honored and invoked by the entire Christian people by this tenderest of titles’”.

In these months of May and June, when we honor our Blessed Mother and the special women and men in our lives we lovingly call our mothers and fathers, Mary points the way to how we can be authentic witnesses to our faith in the Lord Jesus. As Mary is the Mother of the Church, we are encouraged to also make her the Mother of the domestic church—our homes and families.

Like so many of you, Mary has always had a prominent role in my life and it was my parents who first introduced me to her. My family home had statues of our Blessed Mother strategically located throughout the house, to ensure we would always have an image of Mary before us. I vividly recall praying the rosary together and seeking Mary’s intercession, especially in times of difficulty and tribulation. My parents ensured Jesus, and his Mother, was the center of our home and our lives. Praying the rosary, and the Scripturally-based Hail Mary, brings solace to so many. On pilgrimages I have made to Lourdes, Fatima, La Salette, Mexico, Czestochowa and Medjugorje, I fondly recall the image of thousands of pilgrims praying the rosary either alone or in unison. As a priest, we have been encouraged to offer our priesthood to Mary, Queen of the Clergy, and to ask for her intercession to be faithful priests for her Son.

Our fraternal is placed under the protection and patronage of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The statue of Our Lady in her Glorious Assumption, the Patroness of K.J.Z.T. since 1894, located in the entrance hall of the State Office, reminds us of the spiritual tenets of our organization. Let us; therefore, join together in prayer, asking our Blessed Mother to intercede for our fraternal, as we seek to grow in faith and membership:

REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.

In Christ, Father Gary Janak, State Chaplain

On May 12, 2018, visitors and supporters gathered at the Our Lady of Vic-tory Cathedral Center in Victoria for the First Annual event. An event that staff and volunteers hoped would raise much-needed funds to help them continue God’s work. The Emmaus Center, which operates in the Diocese of Victoria, offers “counseling in the Catholic tradition”. This amazing ministry project was brought to life with the help of Father Gary Janak. He is one of the founders, Executive Director, and this year’s Roast and Toast Honoree. Attendees began the evening with bidding on the many silent auction items. Tours of the Center were given and a live auction also took place. A wonderful dinner was served, after which the “Roast” began! “Roasters/Toasters” included Bishop Brendan Cahill, Rev. Kirby Hlavaty, Lisa Bowen, Janice Cox, and Sharon Foltyn, otherwise known to everyone she meets as “Father Gary’s little sister”. Everyone enjoyed the funny stories and anecdotes they all had to share. But all those who spoke also showed great respect and admiration for the man sitting on stage. Father Gary had a dream that became The Emmaus Center. The money raised from those who attended the Roast that night, and all those who contributed, will keep this valuable resource, called The Emmaus Center, thriving. A note in the program from Father Gary concluded with the following, “Christ is the Great Counselor and Divine Spiritual Director. At The Emmaus Center, we are only instruments of His grace. Please pray for us, as we pray for you. In Christ, Father Gary”. Anyone wishing to make donations to the Emmaus Center can call Annie Cof-fey at 361-212-0830.

Also able to attend the event, but not pictured, were State Director Arlene Cloyd and husband, Alan, State Director Joyce Kurtz’s husband, Jerry, and Mrs. Janecek’s husband, Scott. They were all happy they were able to attend.

Pictured (at left) is a marker with Father Gary’s photo. Attendees were able to buy a marker for $20.00 to play a game of “Heads or Tails”. Whoever won, would receive half the pot of money. Mr. Cloyd was in the running until the last round! Next time, Mr. Cloyd!

Pictured (bottom left) is a gift tree, a great fundraising idea! Each cross orna-ment showed an amount that could be donated and what it could help pay for. For example, a $5 donation could cover a ream of paper, and a $25 donation could help cover the costs of a printer. The star at the top of the tree was a pic-ture of Father Gary! You could also purchase a stuffed bear for $5 to be used in the children’s play therapy program.

    The Latest on High Blood

PressureBy Jim Wiest FIC, CFFM, Sales and Marketing Manager

    Managing Your Financial

    Life

High blood pressure should be treated earlier with changes in lifestyle and in some people with medication according to the American Heart Association. The new guidelines released several months ago are tightening recommendations for better blood pressure control for most Americans. This first comprehensive set since 2003 lowers the definition of high blood pressure to allow for earlier intervention and attempt to better control complications that can occur at lower numbers. Blood pressure is reported in two numbers; the upper, higher number is systolic and the lower number is called diastolic pressure, both measured and reported in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).

Blood pressure categories for the new guidelines:• Normal: less than 120/80 mm Hg;• Elevated: Systolic between 120-129 and diastolic less than 80;• Stage 1: Systolic between 130-139 or diastolic between 80-89;• Stage 2: Systolic at least 140 or diastolic at least 90;• Hypertensive crisis: Systolic over 180 and/or diastolic over 120, with patientsneeding prompt changes in medication if there are no other indications ofproblems; hospitalization if there are signs of organ damage.

Home blood pressure monitoring using validated devices is now being more commonly recommended along with proper technique and training to detect “white-coat hypertension” or blood pressures elevated in the doctor’s office. Medication is recommended for stage I hypertension if a person is high risk for stroke or heart attack, or has had one of these complications, is diabetic, has chronic kidney disease, or is high risk based on other measures. Many persons requiring medical treatment for blood pressure will need two or more medica-tions for improved control. Fortunately, multiple drugs can be combined into a single pill for convenience, cost control, and improved compliance. The new, lower definition of high blood pressure will mean almost half of the U. S. adult population will be hypertensive (46 percent). The prevalence of high blood pressure is expected to triple among men under age 45, and double among women under 45. However, the number of persons requiring medica-tion is expected to increase by a small amount as diet, weight loss, and exercise modifications are recommended early on. It is wise to know your blood pressure numbers by having them professionally checked periodically and then following them with home blood pressure moni-toring. Your doctor should be able to recommend a good, cost-effective device for home monitoring. Do what you can with lifestyle changes, but don’t hesitate to be treated with medication if it’s needed. Good blood pressure management can save a lot of future complications.

I & II JOIN HANDS DAY:Bringing Communities Closer

Join Hands Day is a national day of service endorsed by Frater-nals and is designed to strengthen relationships across generations. The goal is to bring together youth and adults through helpful projects meant to benefit the community. This event is officially celebrated on the first Saturday of May each year, but these types of projects may occur at any time during the year. Performed as a test site, from Dis-trict X, Society No. 16 Ennis enlisted their Juniors to work with Texas Ramp Project (texasramps.org). Texas Ramp Project builds in 200 counties in Texas. There is an ex-isting backlog in these counties for ramps to be built. If your District/Society is interested in volunteering or for more information on how your District/Society can participate, contact Mary Poché, Event Co-ordinator. [email protected]; 888-253-2338.
