?Question of the Week

How has my sharing in the Mass given me a glimpse of my destiny to share in the very life of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?

On this Trinity Sunday, we are especially aware that in the Mass we worship the Father through the Son and in the Holy Spirit.

Father Terry Keehan

We are made in the image of a relational God. One of our deep-est beliefs is that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit - Creator, Redeemer and Sanctifi er. We celebrate this belief this weekend

on the Feast of the Trinity. Th e fact that we are made in the image of ONE God who is three persons means that God is constantly in relationship, the Father with the Son, the Son with the Spirit, the Spirit with the Father, the Son with us, the Father with us, the Spirit with us, and so on.

Th ere are many ways to talk about the Trinity. St. Patrick did it with a shamrock, a small green fl ower with three leaves representing the three persons of the Trinity. I often talk about the three movements of God in the Trinity: 1. God moved fi rst in the story of creation; 2. God moved into human life in the form of Jesus Christ; 3. God moves across time in the Holy Spirit. Others talk about the Trinity as one blanket with three folds. Others refer to it as water, steam and ice, three diff erent ways that the same substance, water, is present in the world.

Th e Gospel of John helps us to appreciate the ongoing dynamic relationship within the three person God, and thus with us. Th is week’s passage is a great example. We hear Jesus saying, “Everything that the Father has is mine: for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.” Th ese words indicate a strong unity between the creator and the redeemer—1st person with 2nd person, and the declaration of sharing what belongs to the 1st person and the 2nd person of the Trinity with the 3rd person comes in a declaration to the disciples and then to us.

Th is unity and declaring of God helps us to appreciate the mystery of God. When you really stop and think about it, how can we defi ne God or even identify God? God is so vast and powerful—so awesome and complex, yet sometimes so near and so comforting. We vacillate between the scriptural saying that, “…no one has ever seen God” and then having such concrete experiences of God’s love.

In the midst of this complexity the Trinity helps us to embrace the variety of relationships that we have with God, yet no con-cept can completely explain God. Th e creator God invites us to recognize the beauty and splendor of the earth, sea and sky. Th e redeemer God invites us to be attentive to the reality of full human and full divine life that is manifest in the teachings, miracles, stories and ultimately the Paschal Mystery (suff ering, death and Resurrection) of Christ. Th e Sanctifi er God invites

us to feel, recognize, realize, and touch the presence of an en-ergy that is with us now and continually as we journey through life. Th at is God’s energy, God’s love.

When Cardinal Joseph Bernardin was the Archbishop of Chicago he clarifi ed terms of parish assignments for priests as they participated in the Incardination process. Incardina-tion is a process whereby a priest who is ordained for another diocese or a religious order seeks to be accepted into a diff erent diocese. In short, the diocese or religious order where a priest was ordained has to “let them go” and the diocese or religious order where they seek to serve must “accept them.” Cardinal Bernardin established that a priest seeking incardination into the Archdiocese of Chicago would be assigned to a fi rst parish for one year, then two years at the second parish and two years at a third parish. Th e wisdom behind this is for a priest to get a variety of experiences as they discern if the Archdiocese of Chicago is the best place for them to serve as a priest, and for the Archdiocese to get a sense of that priest’s aptitude for and calling to serve in the Archdiocese.

We have been blessed to have Fr. Tim Monahan with us for the past year, his fi rst in the Incardination process. He has touched our lives and shared his many gifts with us. His kind and gentle manner and his deep spirituality has touched us all. When he began with us almost a year ago, I shared with you the details of the incardination process as listed above and the possibility that he would have to move to another parish in July. Cardinal George has approved the Placement Board’s recommendation that Fr. Tim be assigned to Mary Seat of Wisdom Parish in Park Ridge beginning July 1. We will miss Tim, but we are also grateful for his presence and please join me in praying for him as he continues a discernment process and his priestly ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago. We will have several activities to wish him well, and we will make the details of those events available as soon as possible.

Th is summer we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Spirit Camp. Th is has been an annual favorite for children and catechists alike here at Holy Family. We are issuing a special in-vitation to anyone who has been a camper or leader at anytime in the history of Spirit Camp to please join us at 9 am Mass on Sunday, June 30th. Th ere will be a special reception following Mass and an opportunity to share memories of your time in Spirit Camp. We are also creating a collage of pictures to help with the memories and the fun. Please RSVP to Donna Col-lins at [email protected] . We thank Donna for her interest in making the Spirit Camp reunion a reality.

Prayer Refl ection:

Th e Most Holy TrinityProverbs 8:22-31 Romans 5:1-5

John 16: 12-15

Th e wisdom teacher spoke God’s wisdom as she said, “Th e Lord possessed me, the beginning of his ways, the forerunner of his prodigies of long ago.” She sketched a picture of creation as she described how the one and only God eff ortlessly established the whole universe with ease, order, and peace. Wisdom is there at every stage of creation, from the foundation of the earth to the setting of the sea. God rejoices in Wisdom and she rejoices in God. God, said Wisdom, “found delight in the human race.”

In the second reading, Paul explained how to be in right relationship with God. In order to have peace with God, said Paul, we must realize that peace comes from the grace of faith in and through our Lord Jesus Christ. Paul urged the Romans to recognize that Jesus died for us and we must, “boast in the hope of the glory of God; boast in our affl ictions, knowing that affl ictions produce endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not disappoint.” God has placed his love in our hearts where the Holy Spirit will guide us to new life.

In the gospel of John, Jesus, speaking to the disciples, described the relationship between the Father, Jesus, and the Spirit, adding, “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you in all truth.” Jesus continued to say, “He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and speak and declare it to you.” Everything the Father has he gives to us through the wholeness of Jesus; Jesus gives us, through the Holy Spirit, the wisdom of God, and the Spirit glorifi es Jesus by teaching the deeper truth that belongs to God.

What experiences in your life trig-ger memories of “delight’ in God’s creation?

How does your life point to God? to Jesus?

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning,is now,and ever shall be,world without end.

Amen.

Academy Expands iPad use in 1st and 2nd Grades!

One of the hallmarks of Holy Family Academy’s 21st century approach to education is the integration of technology in the curriculum. It is integrating rather than simply using technology that differentiates our award winning school.

“We are thrilled to be using iPads in our primary grades to support our curriculum and learning goals for our students,” states Mrs. Carlotta Lencioni. Integration of technology into our Inquiry-based learning units really encourages higher level thinking and problem solving. Technology is so essential to address all learning styles, particularly in first and second grade when students are just developing a love for learning.”

The acquisition of the iPads was made possible by a generous donation of Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. Graft, Sr., as well as contributions from an anonymous donor and the Academy Parent Association.

“Our parent community loves our teachers and the innovative learning that goes on at Holy Family Academy,” states Mrs. Angela Geitner, Parent Association President.

“Words can’t convey the feelings we have as parents when we see how excited our children are to come to school every day.”

Clearly, engaging students through the integration of technology into the curriculum has made a difference in the learning that goes on at our parish school!

Outreach & Justice

The Outreach & Justice Community...off ers assistance programs, as well as ministries promoting peace and justice, respect for life and welcoming new parishioners

FOOD PANTRY REPORT - April, 2013Thirteen family visits, including 37 individuals, were served 1020 meals and provided $95 in food certifi cates. Thanks to St. Theresa parishioners for their monthly donations and Indian Princesses for 150 bags of food! Also appreciated are Holy Family parishioners that continuously bring food to the shopping cart each week. Over 265 bags of food were contributed this month! We are truly blessed to have such generous donors. All of our food pantry clients are so appreciative of the foods and other products you donate for their use. Thanks, also, to our pantry stewards who serve our clients with compassion and dignity. See the shopping cart in the west coatroom for items needed.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) agrees that now is the time to pass just and compassionate immigration reform. Core elements of reform include:1. Path of Citizenship for the undocumented2. Future Flow Worker Program3. Family-Based Immigration Reform4. Restoration of Due Process Protections5. Addressing Root Causes of Migration6. Inclusion of the DREAM Act and agJOBS

Questions and Answers regarding the Catholic Church’s position on ImmigrationWon’t a more generous immigration policy risk allowing terrorists and other unde-sirables into the United States? Quite to the contrary. A more generous immigration policy would ensure that government authorities can identify and monitor who is coming into the country. If a migrant comes in legally, they will identify themselves to the government and be subject to background checks and criminals and would-be terrorist can be weeded out. Now, persons who come in without papers are not known to the government and their whereabouts are not known.

What level of border enforcement do the bishops see as necessary and appropriate? The U.S. bishops believe that comprehensive immigration reform will reduce the pressure on the southern border by letting migrants who otherwise would cross the border illegally to enter legally through ports of entry, as they would more easily be able to obtain a visa to enter. This would allow border patrol offi cials, who have a diffi cult task, to better protect us from smugglers and traffi ckers and other criminal elements. The erection of fences along our southern border will not necessarily stop illegal immigration but could lead to migrants depending more on unscrupulous smugglers and taking more dangerous routes through the desert. The bishops also would support more enforcement in the workplace, but be-lieve that migrant workers must be brought out of the shadows fi rst so that all workers are in the legal system. Over the long-term, the U.S. bishops believe that economic develop-ment in sending countries will permit persons to remain in their homelands and support their families in dignity.

Prepared by: Offi ce of Migration and Refugee Policy, U.S. Conference of Catholic BishopsPostcards for your legislators are available in the social justice area of the west coatroom. Please sign and leave the postcards in the basket. For more information, go to www.jus-ticeforimmigrants.org or send an online message to your legislators. Additional resources can be found through the Chicago Archdiocese Offi ce for Immigration Affairs & Immigration Education at www.archchicago.org/immigration.

Prayer for Immigration ReformWe pray for those who most need our prayer: for the undocumented, for those in the path of war and violence of any kind, for those without nourishment, water, shelter, medical care, or adequate education, we pray….

PADS 2012-2013 totals - Bangladesh garment warehouse tragedyMore than 400 people lost their lives on April 24 in Bangladesh when a factory collapsed due to cracks in the building’s foundation. According to a USA Today article written on May 2, 2013, “That build-ing collapse is just the latest to illustrate the working conditions for factory em-ployees in Bangladesh, where retailers have fl ocked, attracted to the cheap labor. At least four other incidents since 2010 have each killed dozens, if not hundreds, of workers, according to Worker Rights Consortium, an independent group that monitors working conditions. As retailers attempt to stay competitive by offering the lowest prices, they’re turning to countries with little regulation regarding safety and health standards.” “The country is giving Western retailers what they crave, which is low prices. But that comes at a huge cost to workers”, says Scott Nova, Execu-tive Director of Worker Rights Consortium. The next time you shop for inexpensive clothing at a retailer, please consider who made that garment and what that worker sacrifi ces each day. Fair Trade items pro-vide workers a fair wage and safe work-ing conditions. Holy Family’s Books and Gifts store sells fairly traded coffee, tea and chocolate. Go to www.workersrights.org and www.crs.org to learn more about guaranteeing safe working conditions and information about fairly traded items.
