How to Pray the Rosary

Using beads to count prayers is an ancient tradition, and not

unique to the Catholic faith. The rosary as we know it today

has evolved over time from its original loop of fifty beads

marked out three times (to account for 150 prayers repre-

senting all the psalms) to its present configuration of five

decades with some additional prayers. The rosary is begun

by reciting the Apostles' Creed while holding the cross that

hangs from the loop. The Lord's Prayer is prayed on the first

bead on the way up from the cross to the loop joiner. Then

three Hail Mary's are prayed on the next three beads (often

interpreted as prayers for an increase of faith, hope, and

charity), followed by a Glory Be. Another Lord's Prayer opens

the first decade, which continues with ten Hail Marys, and

concludes with a Glory Be, prayed while holding the chain

between the final Hail Mary of the decade and the next bead

for the Lord's Prayer. The prayer and meditation of the five

decades is directed to one of the mysteries of which there

are four sets (Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous).

There are booklets that offer scriptural meditations for each

of the beads as well, providing an opportunity to enrich this

traditional prayer with excerpts from the word of God.

Como Rezar el Rosario

El uso de cuentas para contar oraciones es una tradición anti-

gua, y no exclusiva de la fe católica. El rosario, tal como lo co-

nocemos hoy, ha evolucionado a lo largo del tiempo desde su

ciclo original de cincuenta bolas marcadas tres veces (para dar

cuenta de 150 oraciones representando todos los salmos) hasta

su configuración actual de cinco misterios con algunas oracio-

nes adicionales. El rosario comienza recitando el Credo de los

Apóstoles mientras sostiene la cruz que cuelga del lazo. El rezo

del señor se reza en el primer grano en la manera para arriba

de la cruz al carpintero del lazo. Luego tres Ave María se oran

en las tres cuentas siguientes (a menudo interpretadas como

oraciones para un aumento de la fe, la esperanza y la caridad),

seguido por un Gloria. Otra Oración del Señor abre el primer

misterio, que continúa con diez Ave Marías, y concluye con un

Gloria, oró mientras sostenía la cadena entre el último Ave Ma-

St. Therese will be having an All Saints Day Cel-

ebration on Tuesday Oct. 31st.

It will begin with Bilingual Mass at 6:30 PM followed by a celebration in

the Social Hall. We want all stu-dents to dress as a Saint and invite all other parishioners to do so as well. Donations are needed and

very appreciated. (candies, drinks and snacks)

Music Workshop for pastoral musicians

The Office of Liturgy is sponsoring a Music Workshop for pastoral musicians on Saturday, Oct. 21, at St. John the Baptist Parish from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Barbara Guenther, Director of Liturgy and Music at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish in Albuquerque, N.M. will be the presenter. Barbara Guenther holds a B.A. in music and a master’s degree in liturgical studies and brings thirty years of expe-rience in parish ministry to her workshops. The cost is $25, which includes registration and lunch. Pre-registration is required; registration deadline is Oct. 16. For information, please call the Office of Liturgy, 801.328.8641, ext. 323. Desk in Oregon . . .

Here in Oregon midterm exams are beginning and the rain has started! It’s been a busier than usual semester for me starting my THIRD (if you can be-lieve it, I still can’t) year of seminary and of my Phi-losophy studies. There’s been a lot of reading, homework, tests, and prayer. But within all the work, as a College we were able to the beach in early September and a few weeks ago we went to the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, OR. There always something to do or to be done, there’s nev-er a dull moment. The above pictures are of the main Abbey Church where we have mass every day and of the campus of the Seminary. In that building with the arrow is exactly where my room is, and where I’m writing this from! I ask that you please keep me in your prayers, that I always remember you in mine! Del Escritorio (mas o menos desorganizado) del Seminarista en

Oregon. . . Aquí en Oregon los exámenes de mitad de se-mestre están empezando y la lluvia ya empezó! Ha sido un semestre más ocupado que los usual ya que estoy en mi TERCER (si lo pueden creer, yo todavía no) año del seminario y mis estudios de filosofía. Siempre hay mucha lectura, tareas, y oración que hacer. Pero dentro de todo el trabajo, la pasamos a gusto teniendo la oportunidad de ir al mar al principio de septiembre y hace unas se-manas a un Festival de Shakespeare en Ashland, OR. Siempre hay algo que hacer, nunca se la pa-sa uno aburrido! Las fotos de arriba son de la Iglesia de la Abadía donde tenemos misa todos los días y del campus del seminario. En ese edificio donde está la flecha es donde queda mi cuarto, de donde estoy escri-biendo esto! Les pido que siempre me lleven en sus oraciones, que yo los recuerdo bastante en las mías!
