Please note that Requiem Masses may take the place of requested dates for Mass Intentions. (There are also a large number of Masses still to be said)   Reflecting on the Gospel Unlike Mary, we don’t have a signal event such as the birth of a Saviour to set in motion our participation  in and contemplation of God’s wonderful deeds of salvation.   On  this octave day  of  Christmas,  then, we  are  perhaps  being  challenged  to move  beyond  Bethlehem,  a manger, and “glorifying and praising” shepherds to the quiet years of Mary’s life when she simply went about her duties as wife and mother, being faithful to God and contemplating the divine Presence  in her heart.   Most of Mary’s  life was spent  in quiet anonymity, as  is probably true for most of us. When we wish each other “Happy New Year” as Christians, we are really wishing each other a grace‐filled year of responding to God’s revelation and a year of contemplating what we have seen and heard so that we can come to understand with more depth and insight.  The challenge of this day, then, is that our “Happy New Year” be more than a passing greeting.  It must  also be a pledge  to,  like  the  shepherds  and Mary, embrace  in  joy  and peace God’s presence  to  us  and  in  us.    Actually  our  greeting  each  other  this  day might  be  “Happy Mother’s Day,” for Mary our Mother teaches us how to live the Gospel, how to be present to her divine Son, how to discern and obey God’s will for us.  Happy Mother’s Day!

We could do with a few more helpers to serve light refreshments and meals, so that not everyone has to attend every day. One way to donate is to become a 'Friend of the Homeless', which involves a modest annual commitment. With the impending CTIC Winter Night Shelter Scheme, coming in to effect in a few weeks time, inflatable beds and sleeping bags will be needed, so any of those you may have, surplus to requirements, would be gratefully received. A BACKGROUND TO MODERN THEOLOGY Father Michael Morton from St. Winefride’s, Sandbach is running a series of talks on 21

st 7:30pm at St. Gabriel’s, Alsager; 28th February 7:30pm at St. Anne’s, Nantwich and 7th March 7:30pm at St. Mary’s Primary School.  These talks will explore the  changes  in  theological  thinking  that have  taken place  in  the  19th  and  20th  centuries  –  a  period of  radical political, economic and social change that has impacted enormously on the moral landscape of our times.  Full details can be found on the noticeboards ‐  flyers are also on the table in the porch. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

CATHOLIC WOMEN’S  LEAGUE  The next meeting of  the Catholic Women’s  League will be held  in  the Parish Rooms on Monday 17th October at 7:30 pm. The St Thomas More and Our Lady’s Lourdes Group will be giving a presentation about their recent pilgrimage to Lourdes.  All ladies of the parish are welcome to attend.

This Christmas please  support  the work of the  Catholic  Children’s  Society  (CARITAS) who  help  some  of  the  most  needy  and disadvantaged  children and  families  in our Diocese.  The  requests  for  support  and services  from  the  Society  increase  as families  find  it  difficult  to  cope with  ever increasing  demands.  Money  from  the collection box by  the Crib will be donated to  this  cause.  Thank  you  for  your continued support. 

 SVP NEWS     On behalf of St Mary's Conference can I say     a  big  thank  you  to  all  parishioners  who     contributed  to our wall box at  the back of     church. We have  just  received  an  amount     £1257.88  which  covers  donations  for  the     period  25/5/16  to  21/12/16.  This  is extremely generous and will enable us to continue our work in the Parish and local community.    DATE OF NEXT MEETING Can members please note the date of our next  meeting:‐ Wednesday 11th January 2017.   SCRIPTURE GROUP Scripture Group will  resume  in  the New  Year  on  Thursday 12th January. Meetings take place every Thursday in the Blue room 10:30 – 11:45am.  At our meetings we prepare for our Sunday Eucharist by reflecting on the Readings.  All are most welcome – contact Angela 664550, or just turn up! 

CAFÉ NEWSA  very  happy  holy New  Year wish  to  you  all  and many, many thanks to all of you and all our wonderful café patrons for their support during the year.  It  is so good to have such a wonderful group of people to work with. Please  will  all  helpers  be  aware  that  the  Christmas  Window display  has  to  be  dismantled  by  the 6th  January.  We  will  be running  a  guess  the  weight  of  the  cake  from  the 2nd January onward and the first January Café will be held on Friday 13th January.  The results from the competition will be drawn on the Sunday 15th. The money collected will go towards Midwifery education in the third world.   NOTE FOR FIRST COMMUNION CANDIDATE’S      Please note that the first session for      children wishing to make their communion      this year will be held on Sunday 15th      January 2017 from 9am – 10am at Saint      Thomas More Catholic High School.  Please      arrive at 8:50am.  CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE  The next meeting of the Catholic Women’s League will be held in the  Parish  Rooms  on  Monday  16th  January  at  7:30pm.  The Mayor  of  Crewe will  be  giving  a  talk  on  her  role  and  that  of Crewe  Town  Council.  All  ladies  of  the  parish  are  welcome  to attend.
