T here is so much competition for our financial support from myriad charitable organizations that our “snail mail” and e- mails are literally inundated with requests. For some this is a daily occurrence. So many of these requests come from groups that with all the best intentions wish to service a very particular group — and in many instances perform admirably in the specific areas in which they are focused. The litmus test, how- ever, is quite simple and straightforward. One needs only to ask the question: “How much of the money contributed goes directly to assist those in the target group?” Numerous national re- ports are published yearly listing the most efficient not-for-profits those that direct the largest per- centage of money received through donations to those they publicize as their target audience to be impacted. Every year the Catholic Charities Appeal nationally ranks among the very highest in efficiency. The Diocese of Fall River Catholic Charities Appeal directed 94 cents of every dollar raised to its agencies and ministries to service the neediest among us last year, in 2017. This figure, which has been a constant for decades, is testament to the quality of stew- ardship the diocese has aspired to and achieved during its long history. “Being able to assure people that 94 cents of every dollar they donate will go directly to assist people in need is a distinct plus for us here in the Catholic Charities Appeal office,” said Mike Donly of the Appeal office. “It has helped us establish a very posi- tive relationship with the thousands of donors from the 82 par- ishes across the diocese. They know we are doing all we can to be good stewards of their generosity, and that we take pride in our efforts to do just that.” Parishioners from across the diocese know the long-standing tradition of the yearly Appeal and are confident when donating. “There is no risk for pastors, volunteers or the diocese itself in ad- vocating for such a credible cause as the 77-year history of this venture can attest,” Donly said. Now that the Appeal has exceeded the $3 million dollar mark, the staff of the Appeal office is confident that the final two weeks of this annual drive will once again see it reach a suc- cessful conclusion. Their confidence comes from the awareness that the thou- sands of faithful donors continually express their faith in the credibility and reputation of this yearly campaign to assist the neediest of our friends and neighbors. Contributions to the 2018 Catholic Charities Appeal can be made online at www.frdioc-catholiccharities.org; dropped off at any parish in the diocese; or mailed to the Catholic Charities Appeal Office, P.O. Box 1470, Fall River, Mass. 02722. Please contact the office at 508-675-1311 if you have any questions. Additional information is available on the Catholic Chari- ties Appeal website, including a complete listing of the ser- vices funded by the Appeal, a message from Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V., Appeal videos localized specifically for each area of the diocese, and a breakdown of the allocations made from the revenues from the 2017 Appeal. There is so much competition for our financial support from myriad charitable organizations that our “snail mail” and e-

So many of these requests come from groups that with all the best intentions wish to service a very particular group — and in many instances perform admirably in the specific areas in which they are focused.
