Term 4 -Week 3 - 31st October 2018

God never refuses His grace to those who ask it.

Catherine McAuley

It is with much sadness that I announce that Mrs Helen

Cracknell will be finishing her tenure in Catholic Education

on the Wednesday of Week 5 this term. A Merriwa lass by

heritage, Helen has given wonderful service to schools in

the Blayney and Orange district including Holy Family in

Orange as teacher and principal and at Sacred Heart and

Catherine McAuley school. We will miss her wonderful

spirituality, her love of sport, especially Newcastle Knights

and her dedication as a classroom teacher. Mrs Sue Derwin

will also be taking leave from the end of Week 5 and all of

2019. Sue shares the same superb dedication as Helen as a

classroom teacher and has proven to be a Kindergarten

teacher without peer. Some of her class have already

planned some rather devious ways to ensure Sue does not

leave! I wish both these ladies the very best in the short and

long term future.

THE INSPIRATIONAL INVICTUS GAMES!

Knox Gibson was recently involved with filming a show for ABC as junior reporter for the

Invictus Games.

Knox attended the games last week (Wednesday to Friday) and described it as the most

incredible experience. “To see the athletes determination, courage and comradery was so

inspiring”.

Michael Lyddiard from the Australian team asked Knox to jump with him in the long jump

(he had a hamstring injury but was still competing so the other competitor could receive a

medal). Knox was allowed to go on the podium to receive the silver medal and Michael

actually allowed him to keep it!

These are some photos (taken by professional photographers and used on social media in

the following days)! Knox even featured (very briefly) in a clip for the closing

ceremony!!! So awesome!

Mission Week: Thank you so much for all your support of our Catholic Missions this year. It is wonderful to see our students putting into place practical ways of helping our brothers and sisters in Christ who are in such need. We were able to help local children in Orange through giving our ‘Deny and Donate’ goods to the Sisters of Charity, as well as support the people of Myanmar through the money raised throughout the two weeks. A huge ‘thank you’ to our wonderful ladies in the Office who had to count all those twenty-cent pieces!

Kinder 2019 Orientation: Our 2019 Kinder children will be joining us again this Friday for the second of their three Orientations. They will be with us from 9.30-11am for the next two Fridays while our current Kinders attend other activities. Thank you to our Year 5 students for so warmly welcoming our new Kinders and their parent. We are very lucky to have such great potential leaders of our school.

Life Education Van: The Life education Van will be at our school for two weeks, commencing next Monday, 5th November. Each class will have an opportunity to visit the van and have a lesson on a topic relevant to their age group. The cost of the van is covered in your school fees. Thank you to Mr Hudson for coordinating this visit.

School Summer Uniform: Please remember that children need to wear their hats during Recess and Lunch time. The weather is definitely heating up and our risk from the sun is increasing. If students forget their hat, they will be unable to play and will have to remain in designated shade areas during playtime. Please label your child’s hat and remind them to bring their hats to school and wear them each day.

Year 6 Canberra Excursion: Our Year 6 are off to Canberra tomorrow, 1st November, for the annual overnight excursion. Thank you to Mr Croke and the Year 6 teachers who are accompanying these students. We wish them well for this important venture!

Year 6 Orientation Visit to James Sheahan: The children from McAuley commencing Year 7 at James Sheahan in 2019 will attend an orientation day on Thursday 15th November. This visit includes placement tests. There is a parent Information Evening commencing at 7:00pm in Mercy Hall on the same evening, Thursday 15th November.

Whole school Assembly: We have another Whole School Assembly this Friday, 2nd November. Year 5H are very excited to present all their hard work at their class Assembly. All parents, family members and friends are invited to join Year 5H at 12:30pm in Kenna Hall.

End of Year Celebrations: Year 6 will have their final Farewell Mass and dinner on Wednesday, 12th December commencing with 5:45pm Mass. Each year we also ask the Year 5 Parents to help at the dinner for the Year 6 Celebration after Mass in Kenna Hall. Notes will go home next week to both Year 5 and Year 6 parents asking for assistance with the different activities associated with this Farewell.

OSCH at McAuley: Just a reminder that our Out of School Hours (OSCH) facility is available for all primary school students of Orange both before and after school each week day and runs from our Sacred Heart Campus in Byng Street. We are incredibly lucky to have this wonderful facility, with its relaxed setting, great afternoon tea, option of outdoor and indoor play has seen all children attending this facility, happy and engaged. After school care is currently on offer from 3:00pm – 6:00pm Monday to Friday, and before school care from 7:00am - 9:00am. For any information on McAuley OSCH please call Amy or Renai on 0439 631 686.

Have a wonderful week,

Robyn Petty

All Saints Day

This Thursday (1st November) we celebrate the feast of All Saints Day. This Holy Day of

Obligation will be marked in our Parish with a joint Catholic Schools Mass at James Sheahan.

Our students from Years 3-5 will attend. After Mass students will participate in a range of

activities led by students from Sheahan. This will be followed by a BBQ lunch. Students will

need to pack their drink bottle and recess. They are to wear their sports uniform (including a hat).

Students must return the permission note if they are to attend. We thank the staff and students of

James Sheahan for including us in these special celebrations.

Why Do We Celebrate All Saints

Day?

Saints are sometimes regarded as ‘Catholic

superheroes’. Stories of miraculous and

remarkable deeds abound, though more in the

vein of conversions and cures than speeding

bullets and tall buildings. But to get caught up

on the Saints of the stained glass windows is to overlook the vast majority of saints. You see, a

saint is anybody whose soul is in heaven. The Church celebrates a certain number of Saints whose

lives provide a glimpse of God for the rest of the Church. But there are many, many more saints

whose glimpse of God was only ever experienced by their family, friends and those with whom

they worked. The feast of ALL Saints is an opportunity to remember and reflect on the lives of

those saints who’ve been known and loved by just a few and whose sphere of influence was such

that they will never be recognised as Saints by the universal Church.

First Reconciliation

We ask that over the coming weeks you pray for our

students who are preparing for their First

Reconciliation. This is also a great time to remind

ourselves that this sacrament of healing, unlike our

sacraments of initiation can and should be repeated.

Reconciliation is offered in our parish at 5:15pm at St Mary’s Church each Saturday (before 6pm

Mass).

Mission Month

Thank you so much for your generosity over

the past two weeks as our students raised

awareness and money for the work of Catholic

Mission. Our students also gave to those in our

local community by participating in Deny and

Donate Day. The Sisters of Charity were

extremely grateful for the food items that were

received.

Although many Christians go ‘on mission’ in

other cities and countries, it is important for us

to remember that to be missionary is to simply

take Jesus to others and this is something that

we can live out each day.

NAIDOC WEEK

This week our school community joined in celebrating the history,

culture and achievements of our nation's Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander people.

We would like to congratulate Bronx Rolton and Arliyah Geal who

received awards at this year's ceremony and our students who

participated in the march. We wish our students all the best in their

performance today and thank them for their dedication in preparing for

this event.

A huge that you to Mrs Mulligan,

Mrs Kelly and Mrs Allan who

have worked with students in

preparation for today's NAIROC

concert.

We wish our students all the best

in their performance today and

thank them for their dedication in preparing for this event.

Welcome Kindergarten 2019

Last Friday we welcomed our Kindergarten students for 2019 at their first Orientation

Day. Students and teachers had a beautiful morning together and we look forward to

welcoming them back this Friday.

A special thank you to our Kindergarten teachers and assistants for all of the work in

preparing for this event. We also thank Mrs Wright from Year 6 for organising a

wonderful morning of activities for our current Kindergarten cohort.

Yr 6 Music Retreat with Fr Rob Galea

Last Wednesday, Year 6 were invited to attend a Music Retreat day, led by Fr Rob Galea and his wonderful band. We were joined by other students from St Mary’s Catholic School, James Sheahan Catholic High School and other surrounding schools in the Diocese. Fr Rob Galea is a young priest who has a special way of connecting with his followers through music and story-telling. Year 6 had a blast and spent a lot of our time up and dancing! Thank you to Mrs Petty and Mrs Tavares for organising this event for us.

These were some comments from our Year 6 students…

’Fr Rob Galea gives us a different perspective of God and a different way of teaching it.’ Joe Madigan

‘I had a fun time. The songs are really catchy and I'm sure future years will love it.’ Max Vaughan

‘We had a great time. The songs were really interactive. I hope we get to come again next year!’

Cooking Up Some FUN!!

Getting our kids into the kitchen and involved with the fun, creative and experimental aspects of cooking, can be fantastic way to introduce them to the concepts of food production, healthy eating and portion control.

Here are some simple steps to make it enjoyable for everyone:

Choose quick recipes with easy to follow directions: Where possible, ensure that they also include tasks that even young children can perform (eg: tipping a cup of flour into a bowel).

Choose recipes that include familiar ingredients: When kids are familiar with the ingredients they’re using, not only are they more confident ‘chefs’, but they may also be more inclined to try new ingredients that are being prepared alongside their familiar favourites.

Create family traditions: Cooking is a great opportunity to talk about the significance of certain foods in the family’s cultural history as well as allowing children to learn about your own childhood. Giving kids the opportunity to add their own ‘signature style’ to a family favourite, gives them greater ownership of the meal (and likelihood that they’ll eat it too).

Encourage confidence and independence: Give your kids praise for their efforts, even if they spill something (accidents happen), and especially when it comes to clean up time!! Encouraging and supporting the development of new skills can include the following:

Ages 2-4: Using measuring cups and spoons, mixing dry ingredients, rolling dough, using cookie cutters, rinsing utensils in tepid water.

Ages 4-6: Peeling veggies, simple chopping (with a kid-safe knife), measuring with scales, topping pizzas, using a grater, and washing up in warm water.

Ages 6+: Mixing wet and dry ingredients, hot and cold ingredients, stirring a stovetop pot (supervised), mixing and rolling meatballs, using a mortar and pestle.

NB: Adapt these tasks depending on your child’s motor skills and their ability to follow instructions.

Have a giggle along the way: Create animal faces on your pizzas or cupcakes, add some crazy colours to your pancakes, make up a silly poem or song as a way to remember a recipe, or see who can come up with the most outrageously funny name for a newly created recipe ‘tradition’.

In addition to gaining some great help in the kitchen, having fun cooking together is just another fantastic way to connect with our kids. By helping our kids to develop positive associations with cooking, food, and eating, they are also far more likely to make smarter and healthier food choices as adults….. and their bodies will truly thank them for it!
