SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION / CONFESSION Every Saturday: 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM When possible the Priests are available for Confession before Mass. Also by appointment by contacting the Cathedral Office.
VISITATION OF THE SICK AND ELDERLY Please keep us informed when a person is sick or in the Hospital. Contact the Cathedral Office in order to put his/her name in the Mass Intention list. If the person needs to receive the Communion, a Priest will visit or send an available Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister.

Our Mission Statement The Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist Community is dedicated to the celebration of the Eucharist, the center of our life, to prayer, holiness of life and service to the poor. We have a multi-faceted community, greatly enriched by people from over twenty seven (27) countries, principally from Central America, South America and the Islands of the Caribbean. We strive to grow in our faith and love for God and one another in our service to our homeless and disadvantaged. We have a strong emphasis on evangelization through prayer communities, frequent Retreats and Missions. We are profoundly dedicated to heed the call of Saint John the Baptist: "Prepare the Way of the Lord." (The Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mathew 3:3) and "He must increase and I must decrease." (The Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 3:20)
Declaracion de Nuestra Mision La Comunidad Parroquial de la Catedral Catolica Romana de San Juan Bautista esta dedicada a la celebracion de la Eucaristia, el centro de nuestra vida, a la oracion, al ejercicio de una vida santa y al servicio de los pobres. Somos una comunidad polifacetica, grandemente enriquecida por gentes de veintisiete (27) Paises Naciones especialmente venida de Centro America, Suramerica, y las Islas de el Caribe. Nosotros tratamos de crecer en fe y en amor a Dios y al projimo en nuestro servicio a los pobres, los que no tienen techo ni oportunidades. First Reading: Genesis 14:18-20 Melchizedek, a priest of God, prayed that Abram would be blessed by God. He also praised God for delivering Abram's foes into his hands.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Paul describes Jesus' actions during the last supper. Jesus broke bread and said it was his body given for us, asking that we do the same in remembrance of him. He then passed the cup and called it his blood. Jesus then asked us to break bread in this manner to remember his death until he returns.
Gospel: Luke 9:11b-17 Jesus spoke to a large crowd when his disciples asked that he dismiss the people to give them a chance to find food and lodging. Jesus asked the disciples to give the crowd something to eat, but they had only five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus then blessed and distributed the food, which fed about 5,000 people. Twelve baskets were then collected from what was left over.

Announcement for St. John Cathedral Parish Bulletin for weekend of May 28-29 Calling all Gardeners or those who would like to learn to Garden. The Father English Food Pantry (435 Main Street) sponsors The Garden of Hope in the vacant lot opposite the Pantry. We are beginning the 2016 growing season. The Pantry is looking for volunteers who would like to help with the garden on weekdays or on Saturday mornings. No experience is needed and English or Spanish is OK. A meeting to explain the program will be held at the Father English Community Center on Thurs. June 2 from 10:00 to 11. Volunteer work includes planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and general jobs around the garden. If you can come or if you can’t come for that meeting but would like to know more, please call Carlos at the Fr. English Center 973-279-7100 ext. 2108 or Sister Maureen at ext 2203. “As the day was drawing to a close, the twelve approached him and said: ‘Dismiss the crowd so they can go to the
surrounding villages and farms and find lodging and provisions, for we are in a deserted place here.’ He said to them,
‘Give them some food yourselves.’ They replied, ‘Five loaves and two fish are all we have, unless we ourselves go and buy
food for all these people.’ They all ate and were satisfied.”
The celebration today sets us apart as Catholics. We do not only recall how Jesus fed the multitude but Luke offers us a glimpse of
the action which takes place at every mass. He tells us 1. Jesus took the loaves and fish, 2. Looked up, raising His eyes in prayer,
3. Said the blessing, 4. Broke the bread, a sign of sharing, and 5. Gave it to the disciples for them to share. Not just for them to eat
but for all.
Imagine the wonder and awe, as people saw what was happening and then were fed. Surely it made a great impact.
We come to Eucharist and the same Christ, in the person of the priest, consecrates elements of bread and wine, because we need
to satisfy our hunger. I must ask myself, if the gift of Eucharist produces the same effect in me? Do I recognize the Real Presence of
Christ in the Eucharist? Do I hunger to receive the gift the Lord has provided for me? Does my encounter with Christ in the
Eucharist produce a unity, a oneness, which is what communion means?
On this special feast I pray that my devotion to Christ in the Eucharist may be revived. May I connect it with my First Holy
Communion. I recall a small sign in my church which told the priest ‘Celebrate this Mass as if it were your first Mass.’ Celebrate it as
if it were your last Mass.
