Por la salud de Suhami Maria Perez. 2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Here I Am, Lord! While there are many ways to give to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, there is a particularly beneficial opportunity if you are 70 ½ or over and have an IRA. If you are in this category, the IRS requires you to take a required minimum distribution from your IRA each year. As a result, this distribution is added to your taxable income and increases the amount of taxes owed to the government. However, instead of taking your required minimum distribution, you can instruct your IRA investment manager to donate this distribution to a charity such as the Bishop’s Annual Appeal and this automatically omits this amount from your adjusted gross income. This tax benefit can be realized by all qualifying individuals, whether you take the standard deduction or itemize your deductions. This can be a significant benefit to you and a great way to support the work of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. If you are considering making a charitable donation using your IRA required minimum distribution, please be sure to first discuss this with your financial or tax advisor to make sure it is right for you.

Mark 30: 37. As Jesus journeyed through Galilee with his disciples, each step drawing closer to Calvary and the cross, He shared with His friends what awaited them in Jerusalem. Despite all Jesus had said to them, the disciples were still thinking about the Kingdom in earthly terms and

of themselves as leaders with power and prestige. There is something truly heartbreaking in thinking of Jesus going towards a cross, all the while his disciples are arguing amongst themselves as to who would be the greatest. Yet, there is a beautiful spiritual insight about human nature that is revealed during this awkward encounter between Jesus and His disciples. What we see is that at the very core of each disciple’s heart, while they were fighting amongst themselves for power, position and prestige, was an awareness of how wrong they were to argue over such matters. And how do we know that they knew they were wrong, even as they continued on with the debate? We hear that when they were finally confronted by Jesus—who simply looked at them and asked what they were arguing about—we hear that they had no responses at all for, “they remained silent.” They had no defense for they knew all along that they should not be motivated by such selfish ambition. When set before the eyes and vision of Jesus, such an exchange acquires its true character. What a spiritual lesson. When we place all that we do and say before the vision of Jesus our lives will change for the better, as will those around us. For example, jealousy, which St. Thomas Aquinas defines as—“Sorrow at another’s good”—will disappear. How blessed we are that all of our deeds are done and all of our words are spoken in His presence! All that we have to do is to acknowledge this truth and continue our journey with the Lord. Msgr. Geno Sylva

Marcos 30: 37. Msgr. Geno Sylva

SAINT MAURICE Feast day: September 22.

Identifying situations: Located amid numerous soldiers who submit to decapitation. Appearance: Dressed as a soldier, sometimes with black skin.

Attributes: Standard, sword, palm branch. Can be confused with: Saint Alexander.

Biographical notes: Maurice lived in the third century and was commanders of the Theban Legion. He was martyred during the persecutions under Diocletian with his six thousand soldiers for refusing to sacrifice to the gods near Agaunum (today’s Saint-Maurice-en-Valais). Patronage: Invoked by sufferers of gout; protector of soldiers, mountain climbers, dyers, and Swiss Guards. The attributes of Saint Maurice are those of the soldier martyr saint: armor; standard (often decorated with a cross to indicate his role as commander); swords as instrument of martyrdom. In some rare cases the saint is presented with black skin both because of his name (which means, “from Maurice”) and because he was part of the Theban Legion. Maurice is only rarely shown on horseback. The only unquestionable element for his recognition is the background of the scene-of numerous other soldiers being martyred, in memory of the six thousand members of his legion, who along with him gave their lives so as not to sacrifice to the idols.
