How old is WATER?! Take a look at the

class of water sitting on my desk.

Think, Pair, Share: How OLD do you think it is?? Can you guess?

Even though the water came out of the faucet 30 minutes ago, the water is as OLD as the EARTH!!!

There is a limited (set amount) of water on the Earth. The water keeps going around and around and around….we call that the….

…the Water Cycle! The water cycle is the

continuous movement of water on earth.

It has 4 main stages: Evaporation/Transpiration Condensation Precipitation Run-Off/Collection

Evaporate up from the ground

Condense into a cloud

Precipitate back to the floor

Runoff, collect begin once more

Reading

Read page 86-88 in the small science textbook.

Define the following words: evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and surface runoff

 Time Limit: 10 mins.

1. Evaporation/Transpiration (hand motion)

Evaporation is when oceans, rivers, lakes and streams heat up and the water turns into vapor or steam and goes back into the atmosphere.

Transpiration is when water evaporated from plants through the pores of the leaves.

2. Condensation (hand motion) Condensation is when water vapor in the air

cools, changes back into liquid and combines with dust, salt or smoke particles to form cloud droplets.

3. Precipitation (hand motion)

Precipitation occurs when so much water has condensed that the cloud cannot hold it any longer and it falls to Earth as precipitation (rain or snow).

Page 11: Catalyst- HW due Thurs. - Ms. Pendergrass' Classmissmpendergrass.weebly.com/.../2/6/11261068/water_cycle.pdfCatalyst- HW due Thurs. 1. What are waves? 2. How does the water in the

4. Accumulation (hand motion)Run-Off/Collection occurs when water that has

fallen back to the earth, runs off and collects in oceans, rivers, lakes or ground water.

And the cycle continues again!

What could affect the run-off of water???

***Put your critical thinking caps on!***

Brainstorm with a partner in your group 2 land features or surface characteristics that could change the speed of how fast the water (run-off) could be collected. – 2 mins

Check yourself before you wreck yourself-C.F.U. Time!

What causes the water to evaporate?

What causes the water to condense?

What causes the water to precipitate (or fall back to the earth)?

Draw your own water cycle:

Your picture must include:

1. Drawing of each step

2. The name of each step

3. Arrows between steps

4. Explanation in complete sentences of each step.

Let’s make our own water cycle: Demo Lab

As we go through answer these questions in your notebook:

1.What drives/makes the water cycle?

2.What stage is caused by the boiling water and water vapor rising?

3.How does this stage happen on Earth differently?—where does it form (not a beaker), why does it rise (not because of a hot plate).

4.What stage is caused by the moisture hitting the aluminum foil?

5.How does this stage happen on Earth differently?—where does it happen? (not on foil), what does it create?

6.What stage does the water dropping from the foil represent?
