The 26 year-old photographer and explorer recently travelled the length and breadth of the United States visiting dozens of deserted sites. Seduced by the aesthetic of disused buildings, he has roamed the country’s abandoned hotels, churches, banks, schools, and amusement parks in search of his character with fiery red hair: Shinda. Captured on the fly, or staged in an improbable setting, always in natural lighting, Shinda contributes to the enigmatic and spellbinding character of photographs taken by the artist. Places deemed impenetrable and full of mystery are revealed in the course of this journey that passionately unveils a forgotten part of American heritage.

The photographs of Marc Adamus are mainly captured in the northwest of the United States and reveal grandiose environments consisting of vast expanses of wilderness, waterfalls, forests, rocky mountains, or canyons, that bear witness to the magnificence and extreme diversity of the landscape and its flora. The power of his photographs resides in their ability to capture the rare light and transient atmospheres that unfold in nature, and thus intensify its fantastic and incredibly mysterious character. The photographer uses only digital means and succeeds

in transcribing the emotional power felt at the discovery of these landscapes. The creative resources offered to him by new technologies allow him to most closely match his interpretat ion of the wilderness, without betraying the subject photographed. With meticulous attention, Marc Adamus brings out the slightest details, working on the tones, contrasts, colours, and brightness of his compositions. In addition to recalling the fragility of these preserved natural environments, he manages to share the power of his emotions.

The Photochrom procedure – a combination of photography and lithography – allows a colour image to be obtained from a black and white negative. This procedure was invented in the 1880s and was very fashionable in the 1920s. It was mainly used in the commercialisation of travel photographs that tourists of the time could procure as a souvenir of their journey.
