CATALOGUE #2

Page 2: Catalogue#2

This quarter’s catalogue carries new work from some of the artists we are working with at present. Drawings in particular are making their mark on the local contemporary art scene; both established and emerging artists are choosing paper as a preferred medium. In 2012, SFG Colombo staged nine exhibitions both locally and overseas. This month SFG expands to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Galle Fort in the south of the island, with a satellite gallery displaying a rotating collection of represented artists throughout the year. Beyond this catalogue of works we have more available on our online catalogue so please feel free to continue browsing our collection of contemporary Sri Lankan art online.

Sujeewa Kumari

Narrative Body Series II

In this series Kumari depicts dreams – surreal, larger than life. The female face is transparent;

her hair is symbolic and unnatural, the waves connecting it to a dream.

Daniel Valentin

Valentin’s photographs find inspiration in ordinary moments and places, the beauty of a solitary man,

a yellow public locale. It reveals the extraordinary in the ordinary and brings out the overlooked beauty

of the everyday, which for him has been the true wonder of Sri Lanka.

Kingsley Gunatillake

Life of a Banana Leaf

Gunatillake’s Banana Leaf series represent the life span of a banana leaf, from being tightly wound up to

maturation and finally it’s drying up with the passing of time. Conceptually the works relate to the artists’

opinion of life in the North and his personal understanding of another viewpoint.
