Training your trainers to train your driversEstablishing your own personalized driver training course can be accomplished quickly and effectively. Whether you operate a small vehicle fleet, trucks or buses, Smith System can tailor a training programme to specifically address your needs. Smith System has all the materials and training aids you will need to conduct the training in house. Our DriverTrainer Course is available in a four-day session for up to four trainees and a five-day session with five or six trainees. Smith System will conduct an onsite programme at a location of your choice.

Our instructors have studied and mastered techniques that are essential to the understanding of driver perceptual behaviour patterns. These same techniques can be taught to your driver trainers, giving them the necessary skills to bring our proven traffic collision prevention methods to your fleet drivers. The ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses in each driver and provide customized, practical solutions to overcoming specific driving deficiencies will be mastered by your newly certified trainers.

Smith System trainer certification remains in effect for a period of two years after successful completion of the course. Each trainer’s skill and knowledge should be refreshed every two years in order to remain certified. Smith System’s Two-Day Recertification Course assures that trainers are certified and up to date with the latest information and techniques available. History has shown that recertification is a critical component in the overall success of the driver safety programme within a company.

Studies show that in any educational process, only a percentage of what is taught is actually retained. Furthermore, over time, some of that retained information is forgotten or unintentionally altered. Refresher CourseOur latest training course builds on the advanced driving skills and habits learned in our DriverDirect Course. The DriverDirect Refresher Course takes drivers to a more sophisticated level of understanding and application of The 5 Keys in their daily driving. Like our DriverDirect Course, the training day starts with 5 students in the classroom discussing our techniques before getting behind the wheel to practise The 5 Keys of Space Cushion Driving in the real-life situations drivers face every day. Utilizing our new Driver Refresher Guide, the day begins with a 5 Key Refresher Quiz. This eye-opening exercise provides a starting point for our Instructor to facilitate a student-focused discussion on the main points of each Key as it applies to driving safely both forward and in reverse. The group is then tested on their retention of past on-road training utilizing our new Driving Techniques Quiz. This allows our Instructor to assess individual student comprehension whilst refreshing the group, where needed, on the main points before taking the wheel in traffic.

The on-road training starts with a structured observation drive. The information gathered through the use of The Observation Drive Form provides a pre-training measurement of behind-the-wheel performance, a place mark of progress since the last training, as well as a benchmark for measurements of performance throughout the training day. This tool also serves as a guide for the coaching session which follows and will be helpful in developing goals for the Driver Evaluation.

In the Driver Evaluation portion of the day, each non-driving student is tasked with evaluating their peers’ use of The 5 Keys whilst driving. The Keys are rotated between the non-driving students during subsequent drives so everyone is thoroughly knowledgeable in their use. Our Driver Assessment Form helps promote a deeper understanding of our proven techniques and the benefits a driver can obtain from the proper utilization of each Key. With our instructor’s guidance, experienced peers yield feedback that helps all involved understand drivers’ strengths and any apparent deficiencies which could result in future incidents if not corrected. The content design of the DriverRefresher course does not allow for students to participate without proper prior training.

Audit CourseOur representative will consult with your organization to better understand your unique driving needs and properly prepare our instructor. Then, a Smith System instructor will meet at your site to conduct one-on-one driver observations with your employees in their vehicles. Our focus will be to evaluate safe driving skills from a "5 Keys" perspective. Depending upon your needs and logistics permitting, we can ride along with up to four drivers per day. A detailed discussion with each driver will immediately follow and a detailed observation report will be directed to management. If desired, driver coaching can also be included.

On-line training with worldwide accessOur comprehensive E-Learning courses intro-duce and serve as refresher courses on The Smith 5 Keys to Safe Driving. These courses are available in forward motion and backing modules for both truck and small vehicles. The SmithE-Learning modules are user friendly and one more tool in keeping drivers safe. This is a highly interactive, multi media rich, on-line training course that teaches our time-tested safe driving techniques to your employees. To ensure involvement, students are required to respond to questions throughout the learning experience. Upon course completion, each participant takes a quiz to measure understanding and retention.
