The Division Imper serves professional installers and designers with a full range of products and technical solutions for solving the major problems that water can cause:

– Prefabricated distilled bitumen-polymer membranes for roofing, foundations, waterworks, viaducts and special applications– Membrane Primers and protective paints for waterproofing membranes– Synthetic and bituminous waterproofing compounds– Polyurethane waterproofing systems– Adhesives and sealants– Saturated felts, drainage and separation layers– Bonded thermal insulation and insulation boards– Tools and accessories.

Almost a century of experience:since 1936… the company’s growth

IMPER ITALIA S.p.A. was established in Torino in 1936, producing water repellant compounds, seal-ants and bituminous emulsions for waterproofing roofs, foundations, reservoirs, dikes, canals and other types of construction. Subsequently, the company responded to growing market demand with a range of special coatings designed to protect large-scale steel structures such as viaducts, tanks, and pipelines from corrosion. Next, these IMPER ITALIA protective products and systems were joined by compounds for protecting, maintaining and repairing concrete.

Throughout this period, the company continued to expand, becoming one of the world’s leading producers of bitumen-polymer waterproofing membranes in the Sixties, and of synthetic thermoplastic olefin and elastomerized flexible polypropylene alloy (TPO/FPA) membranes in the Nineties.

THE COMPANY

To concentrate its energy and resources on the waterproofing sector, IMPER ITALIA decided in 2006 to sell its Torino Business Unit, whose SKIL and BETOK Divisions handle protective paints for steel substrates and resin-based formulations for flooring systems, to the Vene-ziani Group, a historic name in this and related sectors.

IMPER ITALIA now has three divisions, each of which provides a line of products and solutions tailored to its specific market.

The Rhen Division is the ideal partner for construction retail outlets in the Italian market, thanks to its wide assortment of specialized products for new construction, main-tenance, repair and renovation.

The Rubberfuse Division’s mission is to promote the use of TPO/FPA or PVC membrane waterproofing membranes, in recent years adding an innovative line of building- integrated rooftop photovoltaic solar power modules (SINTOFOIL PV).

Imper products are submitted to specific tests at qualified laboratories and agencies, and are certified in the world’s major countries.Agrèment certificates issued by the member organi-zations of the UEAtc (Union Europèenne pour l’Agrè-ment Technique dans la construction), certificates granted by approval organizations overseas (e.g., in the USA, New Zealand and Japan) as well as recog-nition from Italian institutions and companies such as ENEL, Italian State Railways and the Italian National Highway Administration testify to the standing that the high quality of IMPER ITALIA products has ena-bled them to achieve.Recently, B.B.A. (British Board of Agrèment) certified that Sintofoil’s technopolymer composition gives the membrane a service life of over 30 years, following stringent on-site testing and laboratory analyses. In addition, Imper Italia has obtained ETA certification for the “UNOFIX E” bitumen-polymer waterproofing mem-

brane for mechanically retained roofing systems and, unique on the international scene, has obtained ETA certification of the RUBBERFUSE synthetic TPO/FPA polyolefin waterproofing membranes for mechan-ically retained roofing systems, even when used without a reinforcing mat.

As a result of the growing demand for products with low environmental impact, the bituminous mem-branes produced by IMPER ITALIA are supplied with process/product certificates which specify the percent-age of recycled content in accordance with parameters defined by:

• LEED rating systems for sustainable building in Italy and abroad.

• UNI EN ISO 14021 Environmental Labels and Declarations: Self-Declaration Environmental Claims (Type II environmental labels).

Achieving long-lasting waterproofing performance is a question of starting from a well-executed design, using quality products and entrusting the job to in-stallers who can be relied upon to follow the manu-facturer’s directions.(See the section covering general application instruc-tions in DATAQUAD 2000 and the accepted codes of practice that establish standards for workmanship). An important document in the sector, which should always be followed by waterproofing professionals, is the CODE OF PRACTICE for Continuous Roofing is-sued by Italy’s IGLAE construction industry institute. During membrane manufacturing, raw materials must be continually monitored and, given their variety and variability, compound formulations must be constant-ly adapted to the materials that are available at any given time. This calls for a wealth of experience and know-how, the support of a fully equipped laboratory, and effi-cient production systems and processes that imple-ment appropriate controls. Above all, it calls for a deep-seated commitment to quality. There are a number of common misconceptions about waterproofing membranes. One such miscon-ception, for example, concerns the weight per square meter of the non-woven polyester fabrics used for rein-forcement purposes. In fact, the weight of this rein-forcement is irrelevant, as quality must be gauged on the basis of the entire combination of technical and performance parameters. These parameters are not linked to weight, but to the processing techniques and composition of the reinforcement, in synergy with the bitumen-polymer compound with which it is co-extruded.In recent years, there has been an increasing use of fiber or glass tissue reinforced non-woven polyester to improve the dimensional stability of distilled bitu-men-polymer membranes.Another common misconception consists of con-fusing the “cold flexibility” of bitumen-polymer mem-branes with their ability to resist cracking during

installation at low temperatures. “Cold flexibility” is determined in the laboratory under test conditions established by EN standards. The cold flexibility de-termined on the same product or on different prod-ucts can thus be compared, but has no direct influ-ence on whether or not membranes will crack when they are unrolled at the installation site under differing temperature conditions. This is because the condi-tions encountered when membranes are unrolled at the site are much more severe than those used in testing, and are completely unrepeatable. In addition, rolls may be stored outdoors at low tempera-tures for weeks at a time, and a few hours in the sun are not enough to ensure that the entire roll – includ-ing the innermost parts – reaches the recommended minimum application temperature of 5 °C. And dur-ing installation, membranes are often unrolled very quickly (by kicking the rolls, for instance). As one of the factors which is most important to the success of a waterproofing project is correct design, it is essential to use waterproofing/insulation systems that are ap-propriate for the type of structure concerned – with-out neglecting such details as drains, joints, steps, etc., in the surrounding areas. Finally, installation quality is an important considera-tion, as product performance depends to a large ex-tent on the installer’s skill at controlling the gas torch flame and sealing joins between sheets, and at en-suring that all flashing areas around the membrane are leak-free.

“AGRÉMENTS”: QUALITY CERTIFICATESAt first glance, all manufacturers’ waterproofing mem-branes look pretty much the same. They differ consid-erably, however, as regards reliability, or in other words their ability to maintain their original characteristics for years after installation, with a minimum amount of de-terioration. Now, choosing the best membranes is eas-ier, thanks to the “European Technical Approval Certificate” (Agrément technique) issued by the official member or-ganizations of the UEAtc (Union Européenne pour l’Agré-ment technique dans la construction), which consists of representative institutes from eleven European coun-tries. The UEAtc issues directives covering test meth-ods and performance requirements, as well as in-stallation techniques, thus providing a standardized approach for assessing the quality of prefabricated bi-tumen-polymer membranes and many other innovative construction materials. The UEAtc member organizations include BBA in the United Kingdom, UBATC in Belgium, CSTB in France, and others throughout Europe. As a service to manufactur-ers, these institutes take samples of products in actu-al service and investigate their performance over time. They also perform laboratory tests on samples of new products taken from production or stock, on products that have been exposed to extended service, and on samples taken directly at the installation site. Through an extensive, complex process, the UEAtc member organizations can thus determine whether the product truly complies with the sample. The Agrément certificate will be issued to the manu-facturer only after all of the checks envisaged by this procedure have been carried out. And these checks are repeated without advance warning for the entire five-year period that the certificate remains valid. When the certificate expires, the procedure starts all over again. The institutes that have issued an Agrément certificate to our companies perform regular audits of our control system throughout the period of the certificate’s validity.

Quality that extends to serviceAs the performance-related quality of waterproofing membranes also depends on how they are installed, the IMPER Division maintains a customer service de-partment staffed by specialists in design and instal-lation techniques. The customer service department fulfils a variety of functions: solving tricky waterproof-ing problems, developing new products, research, per-forming diagnostic site surveys, training installers (at the Mappano Plant’s Training Center), providing design-ers with up-to-the-minute information, and working out cost-effective technological systems and solutions for special construction sites.

Problem Solving and Customer SatisfactionAt IMPER ITALIA, our philosophy – the guiding princi-ples that inspire everything we do – hinge on customer satisfaction and the awareness that our real customers are the people who live or work in the buildings pro-tected by our products.IMPER ITALIA’s industrial success is a question of ab-solute consistency, of being able to turn out products designed to increase problem solving capabilities in structural protection, where the idea of waterproofing is more than just keeping out water, but also means re-ducing the effects that aggressive or corrosive agents of any kind can have on buildings.

GeneralBitumen-polymer waterproofing membranes used for certain specific applications are subject to CE marking requirements. Consequently, bitumen mem-branes that do not carry the CE marking cannot be put on the market, distributed or used for these ap-plications anywhere in the European Union. The CE Marking certifies that the membrane is fit for its intended use, and is thus intended to protect the consumer. It is affixed by the manufacturer on the ba-sis of Regulation (EU) No. 305/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 9 March 2011 (which lays down harmonized conditions for the marketing of construction products and repeals Council Directive 89/106/EEC), under the supervision of an approved inspection and certification organization called the Notified Body which testifies to the compliance of factory production control procedures. The manufacturer is responsible for organizing and implementing production and production control pro-cedures that ensure that waterproofing membranes comply with the harmonized standards covering each specific application. The Notified Body is responsible for conducting an initial assessment of the manufac-turer, certifying the manufacturer’s production system and/or product, and maintaining an effective program of regular audits.

EXTENSIVE TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION• Website: www.imper.it.• Data sheets covering all products on the price list.• Product brochures.• Divisional price list: a mini-guide to the Division’s

products and their main characteristics.• Product samples.• Presentations of the company and the Division.• Dataquad 2000.• Design suggestions.

DATAQUAD 2000In 1989, IMPER ITALIA inaugurated DATAQUAD, the waterproofing sector’s first computer program de-veloped to help designers draw up specifications. It was a menu-based program providing a limited number of ready-made designs and sample speci-fications clauses. Ever attentive to changing needs, IMPER ITALIA later brought out a revised version of the DATAQUAD program. Thus was born DATAQUAD 2000, compatible with Windows 95, 98, XP, 2000, VISTA, 7 and 8 operating systems.

DATAQUAD 2000 is a major breakthrough in the water-proofing sector, as the program is Italy’s first inter-active guided expert system developed specifical-ly for designing bitumen-polymer membrane roof waterproofing applications. Clear and complete, DATAQUAD 2000 is an invaluable tool for designers and installers alike.

The program offers 60,000 different solutions, with diagrams, isometric scale drawings of multi-later systems, and typical specification clauses which cover virtually the entire spectrum of standard wa-terproof roofing designs used in Italy. In addition, DATAQUAD 2000 contains data sheets for all prod-ucts used.

DATAQUAD 2000 is in line with the IGLAE Code of Practice for waterproofing continuous roofing, which is currently the only applicable code.

Together with the design program, the CD ROM also contains a presentation which provides information about IMPER ITALIA, its divisions and subsidiaries, and a fully-fledged “training course” covering the entire history and development of waterproofing. Emphasis is placed on correct methods for de-signing and applying sealing elements, i.e., bitu-men-polymer membranes, while references to UNI Italian national standards and practical suggestions are also provided.

WHAT IT’S MADE OFTHE COMPOUND: the waterproofing part of the product. It is called a compound because it’s a specially for-mulated mixture of selected bitumens and polymers. The major difference between compound types lies in the kind of polymer used.

The main polymers employed are as follows:

• SBS, which give the compound excellent low tem-perature workability, excellent resistance to me-chanical stress and excellent elastic performance. SBS compounds are also called ELASTOMERIC. Their limitation is that they are unstable at high tem-peratures and do not withstand UV radiation.

• APP, which give the compound excellent UV resist-ance and excellent high temperature stability.

APP compounds are also called PLASTOMERIC. Their limitation is that they are less elastic and less

flexible at low temperatures.

• Advances in polymers have led to the so-called ELASTOPLASTOMERIC compounds which combine the best properties of SBS and APP polymers and are thus heat-resistant, UV stable, elastic and flexible, even at low temperatures.

THE REINFORCING MAT: this is the inner part of the membrane that supports the compound.

Reinforcement can consist of:

• Glass tissue: provides dimensional stability and rot resistance (VV)

• Polyester flock: provides good mechanical strength (NT)

• Continuous filament polyester: provides the product with better mechanical properties (FC)

• Stabilized: all polyester mats can be reinforced with glass fiber to further improve product stability (NT/ST and FC/ST).

HOW TO CHOOSE A QUALITY DISTILLED BITUMEN POLYMER MEMBRANE?In addition to the characteristics described above, bitumen-polyester membranes differ on the basis of two key factors: weight/thickness and cold flexibility:

• WEIGHT/THICKNESS: slate surfaced bitumen-polyes-ter membranes are identified by their weight (densi-ty), which may be 3,5 kg, 4 kg, or 4,5 kg per m2.

Black membranes are identified by standard thick-ness, either 3 mm or 4 mm. They can also be sup-plied by weight, either 3 kg or 4 kg.

Thickness is an indicator of product quality.

• COLD FLEXIBILITY: summarizes the compound’s properties on the basis of standard laboratory tests (UNI-EN 1109).

It does not indicate the temperature at which the product is installed, nor its service temperature. It is an indicator of product quality (for example, –10°C is better than 0°C).

Distilled bitumen-polymer membranes can be supplied with upper and lower faces treated with a variety of sur-face finishes, depending on product and application requirements.

SURFACE TREATMENTS

TERMOTENE®

TERMOTENE® is a thermoplastic film whose use in combination with bitumen-polymer membranes was patented by IMPER ITALIA as long ago as 1977. The TERMOTENE® treatment is normally applied to the membrane’s lower face, though in some cases it is used on both upper and lower faces.

The TERMOTENE® treatment• Makes rolls easier to unroll

• Improves membrane adhesion to the substrate

• Reduces the amount of gas needed to melt the compound

• Ensures that work sites are cleaner, neater and hence safer, as polyethylene release sheets and large amounts of talc are no longer needed to keep mem-brane surfaces from sticking.

SLATE GRANULE SURFACINGSlate surfacing is a treatment that provides the membrane with addi-tional, built-in protection by bond-ing graded and sized natural slate chippings to the upper face during the production process. A special ceramization process ensures that the mineral pigments used to tint the slate chippings are long-lasting.

Standard colors include natural gray, red, green and Reflecta white, while other colors are available on request.

TEXTENE®

TEXTENE® is a high value-added surface finish produced using a special process in which the mem-brane surface is coated with a lay-er of preformed textured polymer fiber film. The TEXTENE® treat-ment is normally applied to the membrane’s upper face, though in some cases it is used on both up-per and lower faces.

The TEXTENE® treatment improves• Appearance, as TEXTENE® gives

the membrane a velvety smooth surface.

• Environmental impact: As they are talc-free, TEXTENE® treated membranes are cleaner to work with and release less dust into the environment.

• Performance: The TEXTENE® treatment improves membrane performance, particularly as re-gards waterproofing durability, ease of torch application, sheet strength and tear resistance, ability to bear foot traffic during installation and paintability.

ALUMINUM FOILARWENOL AL Series membranes feature an attractive surface finish produced by adhesive bonding a herringbone-patterned embossed aluminum foil layer to the mem-brane’s upper face. The embossed pattern is also de-signed to compensate for ther-mal movements on the part of the membrane and the aluminum foil, which take place at different rates.Available colors include natural alu-minum, copper, red and green.

HOW IS A DISTILLED BITUMEN-POLYMER MEMBRANE INSTALLED

Prepare the required number of roofing sheets, bear-ing in mind that sheets must be overlapped by 8 to 10 cm at sides and 12 to 15 cm at ends (See Figure 1 ).Unroll sheets starting from the lowermost point of the roofing slope, applying sheets shingle fashion up the slope. It is advisable to lay sheets so that the end laps of adjacent runs are staggered and offset. Avoid cross joints (See Figure 2 ).Sheets should be bonded using open-flaming torch-ing, taking care to weld a continuous seam along the overlapped joins, along a 100 cm wide strip around the entire roofing perimeter, and in the areas sur-rounding protruding items (e.g., chimneys and roof-top pipes) and recessed items such as vents. The re-maining joins may be spot welded, though if the slope is particularly steep or the roofing will be subjected to stress, all sheet joins should be fully bonded. The flame of the torch should be applied at the low point where the roll meets the underlay or roof sur-face, rather than on the lower face of the membrane which must bond to the substrate. When bonding joins, it is advisable to heat both the membrane and the trowel simultaneously.

The substrate must be as smooth and level as pos-sible, absolutely dry and free from loose material and foreign matter, rough areas, depressions and holes. In addition, slope must be sufficient to ensure that all water drains towards gutters and downspouts. All roof curbs and turn-ups should be capped with con-crete or prefabricated flashing of suitable material.Dust-free substrate must be treated with primer (IMPERTENE PRIMER, PRIMER BIT or PRIMER WB) to ensure that the membrane adheres correctly. The primer coat must be perfectly dry (wait 1 to 3 hours) before applying the bitumen-polymer membrane. When membranes with no protective surfacing are employed, it is advisable that they be painted with two cross coats of either SAVANA PAINT, LAMPROS BIT and BIVERALL, following the directions provided on the product data sheet. These paints will provide effective protection for three to five years, depending on the climate to which they are exposed. It is thus advisable to inspect and maintain the roof regularly. Any roof surfaces whose slope is not sufficient to ensure that water drains cannot be overcoated with SAVANA PAINT.

STORAGE AND HANDLING1. Storage: Rolls must always be stored upright. Do not stack more than two pallets. When stacking pallets, be sure to place a rigid panel

between the two (never stack pallets of low-thick-ness PBM or SBS membranes).

2. Handling: Load and unload rolls with care. Ensure that rolls do not tip over when they are set

down.

3. Protection: Rolls should be protected from the sun and the elements during storage.

4. Temperature: If pallets must be left in the sun for brief periods, cut vertical and horizontal strips in the shrinkwrap packaging to ensure that air can circulate and cool the rolls.

5. Construction site: Take all appropriate precautions when moving pallets with a crane (weight approx. 1000 kg).

solidi, anch’essi radioattivi (polonio 218, piombo 214, bismu-

to 214 ed altri).

ionizzanti. In varie zone costituisce addirittura la principale

causa d’irradiazione, fra le sorgenti naturali d’irraggiamento

(raggi cosmici, acqua ed alimenti, suolo, Radon compreso).
