Preface

It is a really blessing of almighty Allah Subhanahu wa taala that he got such a work done by a person of no knowledge like me which will be fruitful for the scholars.

The work of cataloguing that had been done by Molana Arshi during his 40 years service of Raza library was completely stopped after his death in 1981 AD and waiting for a full-fledged Director or a dynamic person. After 34 years waiting the dream came true, Professor Azizuddin Husain came as a Director of Raza library in April 2012 AD and the first work that he started was to set up a separate section of cataloging. He selected the suitable and skilled persons for the cataloguing of manuscripts.

I personally noted that Professor Azizuddin has been gifted a very beautiful aesthetic sense along with other academic and administrative qualities which can be seen in the works done by him in Rampur Raza library itself. He went to Iran and brought a catalogue format from there. It is one of the examples of his dedication, enthusiasm and passion towards the cataloging program of Raza library.

As a Director of Rampur Raza library he became the pioneer of the Separate Catalogue Program for the first time in Rampur Raza library’s history and also of India, a target has been set under the program of descriptive catalogue and a big princely room has been spared for the cataloguers of Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit and Urdu languages.

Since Professor Aziz sahib spared a very little time for the Directorship of Rampur Raza library I personally was doubtful about the quality of such work because this is a work that requires long time for research knowledge, reading, learning during the work and the passions, but where there is a will there is a way.

It is for the Cataloguer to whom tribute his work, that is why I wanted to tribute this catalogue to Professor S.M Azizuddin Husain the Director, and the Pioneer of the Separate Cataloging Program, not only of the Raza Library but also of India, after my humble request he refused strictly my wish just because of his humility and submissiveness.

The work that is put on my table was to prepare a descriptive catalogue of manuscript dealing with Urdu poetry called ‘Nazm Urdu’. This is itself a Herculean task for the one who is not aware of prosody, poet’s history, different subjects, identification of different typeface, paper, ink and at least three other languages like Persian, Arabic and Hindi.

During the work the most amazing manuscripts I came across were “Bayaz-e-Tooti Jaan” who was the wife of Nawab Yusuf Ali Khan, Nawab of Rampur State who was very much talked about her being buried alive. The poetic diary of the most famous poet ‘Nizam’ Rampuri and the ‘Hazaliyat’ by Jafar Zatalli etc. that I feel like mentioning so many interesting points that are found in them better to leave because of perpetuation. This volume includes five topics of poetry like ‘Nazam Majmooe, Qasaaid, Bayazen, Hazalyat, Mutaffarriqat. There are 136 manuscripts including Tatimmah (Newly accessioned Books).

Since this is an era of internet searching. This catalogue also will be updated some or the other day, I wanted to get it prepared according these online features. Therefore, if we are not able to read the text, the pictures of that content should be linked so that anyone who can understand can correct it. The pictures of seals, other conditions, scripts, cover folio of the manuscript also should be provided on online catalogue format. Whatever could be done is sufficient because the time was running out. If we got the chance in future and to top it all we find any patron like Professor Azizuddin sahib, this work can be done as above said manner.

In the end, I pay my special thanks to Director Rampur Raza library Professor Azizuddin Husain. The way he encouraged, the way he guided, insisted and the kindness he showered, to top it all the way he changed entire atmosphere from indiscipline into the discipline of the library according its requirements and real needs, without which it was not possible for us to complete the catalogue. I cannot reciprocate his generosity and the words are not enough to convey my thanks but almighty Allah.

Introduction The Rampur Raza Library is one of the important libraries of the World. Besides

works relating to different religions, traditions, it is a treasure house of Indo-

Islamic learning and arts. This library was founded by Nawab Faizullah Khan in

1774. The Nawabs of Rampur were great patrons of learning and the learned

ulema, poets, painters, calligraphers and musicians - enjoyed their patronage.

After the indepandence of India and merger of the state in the union of India, the

library was brought under the management of the trust, which was created on 6

April 1951. Professor Saiyid Nurul Hasan, former Minister of Education,

Government of India, brought this library under an Act of Parliament on 1July,

1975. The Chairman of the board is Honourable Governor of Uttar Pradesh. It is

having around 17000 manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, Pashto, Sanskrit, Urdu,

Hindi and Turkish languages. Moreover, it possesses a good collection of

paintings and palm leaves in various Indian languages. A collection of around

60,000 printed books in various Indian and foreign languages are also available.

There are two landmarks in the Islamic world in the field of Cataloguing –

Ibn Nadeem’s – Al-Fehrist and Haji Khalifa’s – Kashfaz Zanoon. Raza Library is

having rich collection of manuscripts and prepared its catalogues. Ahmed Ali

Shauq wrote a book titled – Kitab Khana-i-Rampur, which was published in

1998. It shows that first, list of the manuscripts and books was prepared during

the period of Nawab Kalbe Ali Khan (1865-87). It seems to be the first proper list

of the collection of Raza Library.



X In 1888, Maulana Shibli Nomani visited this library and submitted a

comprehensive report titled – “Report Mutaliq Kutub Khana-i-Riyasat Aliya

Mustafabad, Rampur” dated 14 October 1888. He pointed out the problems of the

catalogues of Raza Library. Then he again visited Raza Library on 6 April 1914.

On the basis of this report Nawab Mushtaq Ali Khan (1887-89) directed the staff

of the library to prepare the new Catalogue of the Manuscripts of the library in

the light of the suggestions of Maulana Shibli Nomani. This catalogue bears the

following columns.

1. Nam-i-Fan (Name of the subject)

2. Number Shumar (Number)

3. Nam-i-Kitab (Name of the book)

4. Nam-i-Musannif (Name of the book)

5. Zaban (Language)

6. Qalmi/Chhapa (Manuscript or Printed)

7. Kaifiyat (Condition)

Following scholars were deputed to work for the cataloguing of manuscripts and

published books of Raza Library, Maulana Hafeezullah, Maulana Muhammad

Taiyab, Principal of Madarasa-i-Aliya, Maulana Fazl-i-Haq Rampuri, Maulvi

Zahoorul Hasan, Maulvi Majduddin and Maulvi Fasihuz Zaman. This catalogue

was having classification of books on the subject.

In 1897, Haifz Ahmed Ali Shauq was appointed in the library and under

the supervision of Hakim Ajmal Khan, prepared the list of Arabic books based on

subject. There are stock registers and the list of books which was prepared during

the period of Nawab Hamid Ali Khan (1889-1930) by Munshi Amir Meenai,

This register bears the signature of all the three persons. Now this register itself

has become a manuscript. Alphabetic order is followed for the listing of books. It

is having 9347 books. But in 1904 on Nawab Hamid Ali Khan’s suggestion a

new register was prepared. Ahmed Ali Shauq writes that, “During the period of

Nawab Khuld Ashiyhan (Nawab Kalbe Ali Khan) a register was prepared in three

parts.” This list was based on alphabetic order but the classification based on

subject, was not being followed. This register is having both the manuscripts and

published books together. This catalogue was published in 1902. It is having

details about the manuscript. Then he prepared the second and third volumes of

the catalogues with more modifications which were published in 1928. These two

catalogues are more detailed and descriptive. He had taken inspiration from the

Catalogue of manuscripts published by British Museum, London. He himself

mentions that this was done by Maulana Muhammad Nabi, Registrar Kutub

Khana and Maulana Abdullah Amratsari also contributed in this work. But these

catalogues were having manuscripts and books together. These catalogues were

written in Urdu language. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Former Minister of

Education, Government of India, visited Raza Library in 1952 and he also

suggested for the compilation of catalogue of manuscripts and printed books.

Hakim Ajmal Khan was appointed as Afsar-i-Ala of Raza Library by

Nawab Hamid Ali Khan. Under Hakim Ajmal Khan’s patronage, the first volume

of Arabic manuscripts was compiled and published in 1902. Then Hafiz Ahmed

Ali Khan Shauq (b.1862) was appointed as the librarian of Raza Library in 1905.

He worked on Cataloguing of the manuscripts of the library. He compiled the



XII second and third volume of Arabic manuscripts, which were published in 1928

and 1929 in urdu. He prepared this catalogue on the pattern of the catalogue of

manuscripts published by British Museum, London.

In 1932, Maulana Imtiyaz Ali Khan Arshi took over the charge as Nazim-i-

Kutub Khana. He was an eminent scholar and took keen interest in the collection

of the Library. He took up the task of the compilation of Catalogue of Arabic

manuscripts of Raza Library. He compiled and published six volumes of

Catalogues of Arabic manuscripts. Maulana Imtiyaz Ali Khan Arshi rearranged

the collection of the library and separated manuscripts from the published works

based on subject. Instead of doing cataloguing in Urdu, Maulana Imtiyaz Ali

Khan Arshi compiled the catalogue of Arabic manuscripts in English so that

larger section of scholars could be benefitted. Mr. Imtiyaz Ali Khan Arshi, writes

in his preface dated 26 November 1963 that, “This is the first volume of

Catalogue of Arabic manuscripts preserved in Raza Library, Rampur.” Mr. D.M.

Sinha, IAS, Secretary, Raza Library Trust, writes in his introduction dated 27th

November, 1963 that, “Since long the need for publishing in English a

Descriptive Catalogue of the manuscripts of Raza Library, Rampur, was felt by

oriental scholars all over the world. Fortunately, the Ministry of Scientific

Research and Cultural Affairs, Government of India, sanctioned a grant for

publishing a Catalogue of Arabic and Persian manuscripts. With their aid, which

we acknowledge with thanks, we have been able to place before oriental scholars

the first volume of this catalogue of Arabic manuscripts. It is proposed to exhaust

the Arabic manuscripts in four volumes, after which the catalogue of Persian

manuscripts will be issued on the same pattern.” Mr. Sinha highlighting the



XIII scholarship of the compiler of this catalogue records in these words, “The

compiler of this catalogue, Mr. Imtiyaz Ali Khan Arshi is a scholar of repute in

the world of the oriental learning. I am sure, this work of his years labour would

be up to the standard lay down by his co-workers both in this country and

abroad.” Maulana Arshi successfully completed six volumes of the catalogue of

Arabic manuscripts in 1977 but his death in 1981, proved to be a setback in the

compilation of the descriptive catalogues and since then this work suffered a

setback. When I joined as Director of Raza Library on 3 April 2012, so I decided

to pay special attention for the compilation of the descriptive catalogues of

manuscripts. Catalogue of Pashto manuscripts was published by Rampur Raza

Library in 2012.Catalogue of Turkish and two volumes of Persian manuscripts

published in 2014.

I am highly grateful to Shri Ram Naik, Honourable Governor of Uttar

Pradesh and Chairman, Rampur Raza Library for his patronage. I am extremely

grateful to Shri Sripad Yesso Naik, Minister of Culture, and Mr. Ravinder Singh,

About The Book

This is a poetry collection of Tooti Jān,pen name “Tooti” along with different poets. It is her personal diary too. It consists of Ghazal, Salam, Rubai, Soz, Barahmasa (in Hindi script is Persian), Marsiya (sorts of Urdu and Persian Poetry) and Pahiliyanof Ameer Khusru. A large number of writings are in Persian. A very big part of music related poetry like Thumri and Tappa of Mian Shori of Punjab, all are in Punjabi language the script is Persian. Tooti Jān had compiled this manuscript in the period of Nawab Yusuf Ali Khan, pen name "Nāzim" Firdaus Makān (1855-1865AD). First page of the manuscript is in Panjabi language. There are Some contents, not related to subject, like medical prescriptions. I am very much convinced and sure in the light of information of this manuscript that, the compiler is the same

much talked about Begum (Queen) of Nawab Yusuf Ali Khan, who was very beautiful very nice singer and dancer. It is said that, ‘she had been buried alive by her husband and the nawab because she had started love with someone else’. Without any grave mark, her Tomb is in the east of Nawab Faizulla Khan’s tomb near kothhi Khusro bagh Rampur.This premises are famous with “Tooti Wala Maqbara”. This is a rare manuscript because there is no evidence of the existence of “Tooti” instead of this book. There are so many Ghazals with her,pen name in Urdu and Persian as well.

About The Book The manuscript is a poetry collection of different poets; this rare manuscript had been written,compiled and copied by author and himself,there is anembossed seal on folio 5b and 17b as 1847AD,Assumed as the year of the copying. There is an important letter on last pages of the manuscript in the handwriting of Nawab Kalb-e-Ali Khan to the commissioner telegraph of India Mr.Nuiter, in English on 16 August.

About The Book The manuscript is about the biographical anthologyof the poets who were in connection with Rampur State somehow. The Author was a famous poet and employee of Rampur State; he introduced poets with their samples of poetry. First time it has been published in 1880AD. In 1982AD it has been published by Uttar Pradesh Urdu academy, Lucknow second time, it covered for about 428poets. In this book, a very big and lengthy part has been given to those rulers of the Rampur State who were the poets.

About The Book It is a preceding work. This manuscript is a compilation work, which has been done by the copier. This manuscript was written on the will of the Nawab Kalb-e-Ali Khan of Rampur State for fulfillment of spoken porter game (بیت بازی) and the other purpose was to sell this book among the lovers and players of this game.Eight thousand (8000) verses of two thousand (2000) poets are included. On the margin of the folios, there are the names of the poets of the verses;last fifty 50 folios of the manuscript bear a list of the poets with their teacher's name. It could not be completed until Nawab Kalb-e-Ali Khan passed away, When Nawab Hamid Ali Khan had a full control on the State and Hakim Muhammad AjmalKhan was deputed as an officer of the Library, the compiler had completed this manuscript.(folio 1b - 2b)

About The Book The writing of this manuscript had been started in 1886AD on the will of Nawab Kalb-e-Ali Khan Nawab of Rampur State, The Nawab wanted his teacher Ameer Mināi to collect and compile all types of poetry of popular poets in Urdu of Delhi and Lucknow included the poetry of heads of the States too. Amir Mināi refused this order by making a compulsion, as he was not well; meanwhile he asked one of his disciples Mehdi Ali Khan "Mumtāz" Rampuri to do this work. Mehdi Ali Khan‘Mumtaz’ Rampuri had compiled this work in 1900 AD; In the meantime, Nawab Kalb-e-Ali Khan had passed away in 1887AD and Ameer Meenai had diedin 1900AD, Both the person could not check out this manuscript In the period of Nawab Hamid Ali Khan. Hakeem Ajmal Khanwas deputedas the officer of the Rampur State library. The manuscript was given to him by the compiler himself, This manuscript is in 17
