' The large M coins Seem to be somewluit rare, and the British Museum specimensare in poor condition. It may be suspected though I have found no proof of thisthatthese large coins are really folles of the 5th or 6th cent. ' Sab., ii, p. 19, No. 34, describes a coin of Constantlne with (i.e. 5 Nummia)on the rev.'' The solidi of this fabric all show traces of barbarism in legend and style. Theremust be some doubt, therefore, as to their emanation from the Imperial mint at Carthage,

but, in any case, it is certain that they are of African origin. As to the Carthage mintin this reign, see Introduction, supra, 2, 'Constantlne IV'.

^ Probably a blundered rendering of CONOB : so also on the following coins.

' There are no specimens (at any rate in the British Museum) of the semissis (andtremissis) of flat fabric, which can be confidently assigned to the Carthage mint ofConstantine IV. The minting of these pieces at Carthage was, however, undoubtedlygoing on under his successor Justinian II (see infra). Cp. the tremisses assigned, infra,to Constantine IV, Roman mint.

Compare Sab., ii, p. 41, No. 1 ; Photiades, No. 361 ; Ponton d'Ameoourt,No. 931, but it is not certain that these are of Constantinople. Bibl. Nat., Paris.^ PI. XLV. 19.^ This solidus, like the next, is closely modelled on the Roman solidi of Leo III in

conjunction with Constantine V. The appearance here of Constantine V in conjunctionwith his opponent Artavasdes is strange, but is probably due to a mistake of the engraver, who mechanically copied the bead and legend from the solidi of Leo III and Con-stantine V. In type 2 Constantine V disappears in favour of Nicephorus, though bothbusts (except for the inscription) are practically identical.

^ On the solidi of this reign two Leos and two Constantines are represented, hut eachis accompanied by a distinguishing epithet. Leo III is called the ' grandfather ' {Tramros),and Constantine V the 'father' (jrarijp) of the reigning Emperor Leo IV. Constan-tine VI, Leo IV's young son, is described as o v(os. The name of Leo IV himself isfollowed by an enigmatic inscription which seems to be rightly read VSSSSOh(sometimes VOSSSSOh ; on No. 6. VSSSOh). Friedlaender (Zeit.fiir Num., iv, p. 150)has interpreted VS (or VOS) as vl6s, and this is a probable abbreviation, though onewould have hardly expected an epithet ot relationship to be applied to Leo IV, as his'sonship' is already implied in mmros and vaTrjp. The rest of the inscription, SSSOh,is explained by Friedlaender as, perliaps, a participle (ricraav connected with a-iaa-os 'theImperial throne '. But no such verb is known. Possibly the second S may be the signof et or Kal (as it is on the M of this Emperor, and elsewhere), and we might readvS S SSOh, i.e. vlds K(ii fjaauv. But this is not very satisfactory.n M
