rare. (Crosby, pi. vm, No. 14; p. 345, the identical piece.)
The obverse die was doubtless made in N. Y. during or
shortly after the Revolution, as is indicated by the style;
of eagle and workmanship: the reverse is of more artistic
finish and was no doubt made in France many years
before, and intended for the popular jetons then so
abundant. The idea of a Dutch origin for this piece is
quite ridiculous and could have emanated only from the
“ History writer ” for a Magazine who gets pay for quan-
tity of guess-work material, instead of quality or accuracy
of his statements.

The two last described coins were formerly the property of Hon. Chas.
Thomson, Secretary to the first U. S. Congress, and were discovered about
fifty years ago in the desk used by Thomson. The following letter from a
former owner reads viz. :
—
Piiilada., May 28, 1872.
Jno. W. Haseltine, Esq.
Dear Sir:
The history of the two coins which you obtained from me, viz.: Nova Con-
stellatio, 1783 U. S. 1000 and—500, is as follows:—They were the property of
the Hon. Charles Thomson, Secretary of the first Congress. At his death his
property was left by “will ” to his nephew, John Thomson of Newark, Del.
These two coins were found in the desk of said deceased, Charles Thomson,
— 49 —
anc! preserved by his nephew during life; at his death they came into possession
of his son, Samuel E. Thomson of Newark, Del., from whom I received them;
they were never out of the possession of the Thomson family until I received
them.
Yours respectfully,
Rathmell Wilson.
(This letter will go with lots 580 and 5S1 if sold together.)
582 Nova Constellatio, Half Dollar, or 500 Mills: 1783: radiant
eye and stars in circle: no legend. from same die as
that of next preceding: silver: very fine: proof surface',
strong impression: unique. (Crosby, pi. vm, No. 307, p. 3.)
583 Nova Constellatio, Dime, or 100 Mills: same type as the
Dollar, but with value 100 in the wreath: silver, fine sharp
proof; unique. At the time of publication of Crosby’s
work in 1873, no specimen of this coin was known, in fact
not until 1885 was it published, after having been pur-
chased in Scotland.
Vflplp The foregoing set of four pieces, being unique, individually and
collectively, and the most important of the experimental coinages of
the United States, they should be sold as a set,and will be if a suit-
able bid is made to start them.
