14 years for sale – a true Swedish storyCaroline Engvall

DisgraceCaroline Engvall

14 year old Tess lives the life of most middle-class swedish teenagers; she lives in a nice terraced house in a sleepy town, in harmony with her mum, dad, big sister and kid brother. School’s coming along nicely, and she happily spends as much time as possible at the stable. But one night, things take a really bad turn. On her way home from the stable, she’s brutally raped, and ironically the culprit is the presumably ”nice” guy from the stable crowd. Tess keeps the rape a secret and her world falls apart. When a friend suggests ”a little hooking on the side” to make some quick cash, she shrugs: ”why not?, things can’t very well be worse anyway, or?” Well, they can, actually. And Tess life turns from bad to worse, in a vicious circle of self-humiliation, attention-seeking and yet more prostitution. As things evolve, the men in her life even stop paying for her forced services. One of the worst are her own sisters ex-boyfriend.

Tess flees her home town and settles in a northern Sweden high school, but some-how, the men finds her and everything begins anew. Nobody in the grown up world seems to notice what’s going on. Is there no end to the pain?

14 years for sale is a novel of great importance, for many reasons. Tess is a very unlikely prostitute, far from the clichés of bad childhoods, parental abuse and so forth. Nothing is really wrong in her world. Until everything turns bad at once. What happened to Tess, might – to put it bluntly – happen to anyone.

Sandra is the girl who seems to have it made. She lives in the chicest neighbour-hood in Stockholm City. On the surface, everything is perfect. Nobody would assume that she lets herself be raped by older men on a regular basis, having lied to her parents about sleepovers at friends.

When Nadja was 15 years old, pictures of her body were circulated at school. She might just as well use it for the only thing that she did well – sex.

Jocke is the 17 year old guy who sells himself to violent sex buyers. He needs the money to support himself – and his dad – since mum walked out on them.

Sandra, Nadja and Jocke represent a new part of the society, something that we would rather not be aware of. They were no more than kids when they turned to selling themselves as a way to reduce their angst. Unfortunately, these are true stories. Their tales, and many like them, are everywhere: in cities and villages, in all parts of society. These teenagers have learned the hard way to cope with the things that are done to them, and tohide their disgraceful secrets from the grown-up world.

Disgrace is a shocking true story, told in a skilful way by Platinum Paperback award winning journalist and author Caroline Engvall.

The Invisible Children– The Unknown Trafficking of Children in Sweden

Caroline Engvall

Linda was the young school girl who fell in love. Her boyfriend was twenty years older, and he promised her the moon and the stars – if she would just consent to meeting some of his friends first. Until Linda was sixteen years old, the love of her life sold her to strangers for sadistic sex.

Sara had a safe and loving childhood – but when her older brother was diagnosed with cancer their parents no longer had the time for Sara and her feelings. She numbed herself with drinking and drugs. To further cut herself off from feeling anything, she began selling sex. Her parents didn’t notice, the school didn’t notice. When she finally tried to get help, no one would believe her.

Johanna had always been the good girl. Never fallen in love, never partied, but when the most popular guy in school started to pay at-tention to her she fell hard and fast for him. When he and his friends raped her repeatedly she started to hate her body. And so she started giving it away, to hurt herself.

Praise for 14 years for sale, Disgrace and The Invisible Children

“A must read!”Camilla Läckberg, Best selling writer of crime novels

“This subject is important, to say the least. It gladdens me that you [Caroline Engvall] shed light upon Tess’ experiences.”

Beatrice Ask, Minister for Justice

“Important in so many ways that it’s hard to exemplify them all. This book should be mandatory reading in swedish second-ary schools and high schools.”

Bokhora, Multiple award winning blog on books

“It’s impossible to defend oneself against Sandra, Jocke and Nadjas’ vulnerability. I’m convinced that this is an important novel that will make a difference.”

Åsa Landberg, psychologist Save the Children

“Disgrace is a tremendously powerful story on how young teenagers use sex to reduce their angst. An eye-opener.”

Hillevi Wahl, Metro

There is an unknown number of children selling sex to adults in Sweden. The younger the better. There are also chil-dren who are sold by others for sex. The domestic sexual trafficking is unknown to most people, but it is a bitter reality. This results in children who are deeply ashamed and afraid that no one will believe them – and therefore they continue to keep silent.

The year is 2014 and there are no more births. The world is in shock, paralysed by the development. Then, suddenly, the pregnancies begin anew, but the new children aren’t as children used to be. They don’t play, they observe in silence. The older, regular children are fright-ened by the new ones and avoid them, and the low, buzzing sound they emit.

Rakel immediately feels uncomfortable and anxious in the company of the new children. One day, while babysitting an older child for a friend, she witnesses how the new children attack the older child, trying to kill him. Acting on instinct she tries to rescue him, but ac-cidentally kills one of the new children instead. She is sentenced to compulsory institutional care, but is released suspiciously early.

More and more new children are born, and they develop much faster than the previous generations. After a terrible incident on Rakel’s job she flees. Fleeing from dashed hopes and an ever-present anguish she seeks solace in love affairs and drinking. Until the day she discovers that she is pregnant.

Meanwhile, humanity is slowly discovering that the new humans are a threat to their entire existence.

The beard boom is upon us! Beards are grown everywhere, from bushy playoff beards to stylish and hipster adornments. And where there are beards, there are questions. How do you begin and how do you continue? Can you do anything to grow a fuller beard? And will the beard help you to get laid?

This book began with the immensely successful Beard blog that started in 2010, och quickly became the hub for all beard related matters in Sweden. An important part of the blog is the readers tips on beard care, and the very best of them are collected within these covers.

The Beard Bible takes beards seriously, without becoming too serious. It shows why men love their beard so much. The journal-ists Eric Thorsson and Axel Naver, together with the photographer Anders Bergstedt depicts the histories behind the beards.

The book tells us about the gibes aimed at Leif Pagrotsky, former minister of Trade and of Education, in the Cabinet for his beard. It also describes how the rapper Adam Tensta had to fight for his beard, and how the male model Anders Lindström turned down a job in favour of his beard.

The Beard Bible is also chock-full of beautiful photographies, over a hundred men (and a couple of women) are depicted and there are many beards to be inspired by. It also offers the reader a perspective on our cur-rent fashion by looking back at the centuries of changing beard trends. The reader also gets an insight in the former days of beard taxation, and what beards really have to do with the continous battles between England and France. In addition, The Beard Bible guides the reader in the discussion regarding women’s, quite com-mon, facial hair and to the different religious views regarding beards.

If you read this book, we can promise you that the next time you see a beard, you will view it quite differently.

Jack’s Heavy Metal Journey•

Jack and the Magic Tattoo•

Jack and the Timeweaver’s Tale

Therés Stephansdotter Björk

Jack’s Heavy Metal JourneyJack is a die-hard metalhead who loves the band Dragonhearts. A lot. One night, as he sleeps at his daddys, the dream of meeting his heroes comes true. But not the way he had expected it to. Metallia – the magic realm where rockers go to rest between gigs and tours – has come upon hard times in the shape of the villainous Professor Turnitdown, and his wicked invention that takes away all the heavy sounds. Jack suddenly finds that he is the only one who can save the precious Metallia. Jack’s Heavy Metal Journey is a easy-to-read book, crammed with heavy metal references that will be much appreciated by mum and dad as well. (Supposing, of course that they are true metalheads too.)

Jack and the Magic TattooOne day, as Jack and his best friend Alice are hanging out in Metallia – the magic realm where rockers go torest betweens tours and gigs – they get to meet a true legend: Daddy Crool, who is every rock star’s favourite tattoo art-ist. It is said that his tattoos come with a form of magic that increases the Metalness and Cool Factor of its wearer. Then disaster strikes: Daddy Crool disappears! Not without a trace, but the trace is really, really scary: A Giant Vortex, the whirlwind that every rocker fears. How did this happen? Their grown up pals in Dragonhearts have gone on tour, so Jack, Alice and the jovial rocker Snowy are left with the terrifying task of saving the Magic Tattooer.

Jack and the Timeweaver’s TaleSomething is seriously wrong with time and no clocks tell it accurately; five shows run simultaneously on the tv and the phones just won’t stop ringing. What is wrong? Could it be that stressed out parents, trying to be everywhere all the time, have destroyed the fine threads of Time itself? Jack and Alice are once again summoned by the forces in Metallia to help save Time. Together with their Heavy Metal friends they set out to locate the ailing, old Timeweaver in his cave. He really needs help in coping with humanity’s disregard for the time-space rules. Silly as it might sound, most grown-ups don’t get that you can only be in one place at a time. As the epic adventure unravels, Jack and Alice realise that it’s not ”just” the Timeweavers fate at stake, but the future of the entire earth. And they are the only ones able to make things right. Will they get there in time?

The world’s first Heavy Metal picture book, (naturally aimed as much at rocker parents as the kids themselves) where children can learn all about roadies, groupies, managers, tour buses and “motherfuckers going apeshit”.

A very, very sophisticated product (a 20x20 cm tomb, mock leather bound with title in “rivets”) released in Sweden to stand-ing ovations from the entire Metal Community. Unique, fun and, in all modesty, brilliantly illustrated!

“Oi, wanker – get a haircut and a job!”

Where do the kids pick up that kind of language? And HOW do I ensure that my kid does that too, and grows up to be a hardcore hoolie? Look no further! The Young Hooligans Picture Book is the hard hitting news you’ve been looking for. Packed to the brim with Hoolie references, elegant and instructive illustrations, it’s the perfect gift for every true-born footballer, his or her kids and parents in-law.

The Young Hooligans Picture Book gives you the perfect start to enjoying football to the hilt, a four color adventure with referees, coppers, knuckle dusters, away-games, gravel pit fights, tifo’s and such. In other words: The Young Hooligans Picture Book has your back. And it expects you to return the love, mate.

The Young Hooligans Picture Book

Sweden’s number one hair metal band (“Final Countdown”, anyone?) during the 80’s, written by well renowned Heavy Metal journalist Mattias Kling.

Few Swedish rock bands have become more success-ful than Europe. Mattias Kling depicts their journey, from the messy start in a suburb to Stockholm in the end of the 70’s, to the “Final Countdown” success in 1986 and beyond, right into the history of rock. The book also holds a spectacular photo material, taken by Michael Johansson, who’s been following the band since the beginning.

Only Young Twice – The true story of Europe

Mattias Kling

The biggest instrumental jazz act in the world in 2006 was actually Swedish. This is the inspiring – and sad – true tale of three guys graduating from garage band to top selling and globally performing jazz trio, and the tragic scuba-diving accidental end.

A Strange Tale is the story of a jazz trio who did the impossible and went from small gigs in local pubs to great concert halls all over the world. A must read!

“Everyone should read this book.” Dala-Demokraten

“Those who didn’t get EST before will most definitely do so after reading this book.” Västerbottens Folkblad
