“That Little Distance” is an exhibition of new works by Hanoi-based photographer Jamie Maxtone-Graham. Le Magasin de jouets shows for the first time THAT LITTLE DISTANCE in Europe.

In “That Little Distance,” Maxtone-Graham focuses on enigmatic portraits of individuals with his own presence subdued in deep shadow, in a palette of soft, muted colors and rich textures.

« Produced during 2013 in a former State-owned and vacant pharmaceutical factory in Hanoi, Vietnam - the rough interior of the room repurposed into a daylight studio, the sole source of illumination was a large, north-facing window producing only a soft, indirect light throughout the day.

The sitters for these portraits include artists, authors, ex-patriots, poets, tourists, a gangster, mothers, gays, abled and disabled, musicians, a journalist, lesbians, a surfer, an infant, an 80 year old man, office workers, filmmakers, students, and performance artists. Without identification, they exist equally - in relation to one another and to the tightly controlled political environment, in relation to the photographer, in relation to the history of image making and to the light. These simple, quiet, scenes belie the profound themes at play where history, art history, prejudice, human relationships, nature and time itself collide in small performances of stillness.

With a nod to 17th century Dutch painting and the tradition of memento mori, the dramatic light in the photos lends the work a sacred and serene air.

In late December 2013, the city authorities denied access to the former factory to all who had been using it as either place of business, home, studio or art space and within a week, the entire site was vacated. Only the light can still get in.»

L’exposition “That Little Distance”, dernier travail en date de l ’artiste Jamie Maxtone-Graham, est présentée pour la première fois en Europe par la galerie Le Magasin de jouets.

Le travail “That Little Distance” nous emmène au coeur de portraits énigmatiques incluant la présence de l’artiste dans les coins les plus sombres de l ’image, dans une palette de couleurs et de textures riches propres à la tradition du ‘‘memento mori’’ et de la peinture flamande du XVlle. « Les séries THAT LITTLE DISTANCE & STILL LIFE ont été produites en 2013 au coeur d’une usine pharmaceutique désaffectée à Hanoï. L’intérieur brut du building s’est transformé en un studio avec pour seule lumière celle du jour, lumière indirecte et douce provenant d’une large fenêtre orientée plein nord dans la pure tradition des studios photographiques du début de l’ère victorienne.

Dans cette série les modèles sont artistes, auteurs, poètes, touristes, gangster, mères, gays, des personnes valides et invalides, musiciens, journaliste, lesbiennes, surfer, bébé, un vieil homme de 80 ans, un employé de bureau, réalisateurs, étudiants, performer. Sans les identifier, ils existent tous sur un pied d’égalité, en relation les uns avec les autres, en relation avec le photographe, en relation avec le régime politique stricte du Vietnam, en relation avec l’Histoire et l’histoire de l’art. Ces scènes calmes et intriguantes invoquent les grand thèmes de l’art, du portrait et de l’autoportrait en jouant avec les préjugés que nous pouvons avoir sur les relations humaines. La notion de temps et l’idée de ‘‘naturel’’ entrent en collision dans ces petites performances calmes et destabilisantes.

En décembre 2013, la Ville d’Hanoï a décidé de reffuser définitivement l’accès à la vieille usine à tous ceux qui pouvaient l’utiliser comme bureau, studio, maison ou espace d’exposition et en seulement une semaine l’immeuble a été condamné laissant seule, désormais, la lumière y pénétrer.»

A native of Connecticut, USA, Jamie Maxtone-Graham has been working for more than 20 years in the field of narrative cinematography, engendering an eclectic body of works ranging from independent films, mainstream feature films, episodic television, and photography.

He first came to Vietnam in 1990 for the feature documentary from Hollywood to Hanoi and returned a number of times before calling Hanoi his home.

In 2007 Maxtone-Graham was awarded a Fulbright Research Fellowship to pursue State of Youth, a photographic project on contemporary youth culture in Vietnam. He has published numerous photography portfolios in notable publications such as burn Magazine, Trans Asia Photography Review, Culturehall, Invisible Photographer Asia and Photography & Culture.

His photographs have been featured in exhibitions in Europe and Asia including : Terra Cognita: Noorderlich Photofestival, Groningen, Netherlands (2012); Media/Art Kitchen, Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Jakarta (2013); and The Desiring Garden, Kathmandu Photo Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand (2012).

Américain originaire du Connecticut, Jamie Maxtone-Graham a travaillé plus de vingt ans dans le cinéma créant un ensemble d’oeuvres variées allant du film indépendant, aux films grand public, en passant par des sériee télévisées et des photographies.

En 1990, il vient pour la première fois au Vietnam pour réliaser un documentaire. Il y retourne ensuite de nombreuses fois avant d’appeler Hanoï ‘‘my home’’.

En 2007, Maxtone-Graham s’est vu décerné une importante bourse pour poursuivre son travail, par le biais d’une recherche photographique sur la culture de la jeunesse vietnamienne. Son travail a été publié de nombreuses fois comme dans les revues BURN Magazine, Trans Asia Photography Review, Culturehall, Invisible Photographer Asia et Photography & Culture.

Il a réalisé de nombreuses expoitions en Europe et en Asie dont :Terra Cognita: Noorderlich Photofestival, Groningen, Netherlands (2012), Media/Art Kitchen, Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Jakarta (2013); and The Desiring Garden, Kathmandu Photo Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand (2012).
