Ipone specialises in lubrication. We have been

manufacturing and distributing oils and main-

tenance products since 1985, tested and

developed exclusively for motorcycles and

recreational vehicles such as quad bikes, jets-

We intend to remain a leading force for

products comply with the most demanding

international standards (JASO, API and

NNMA). We use high-performance additives to

produce our synthetic oils to give them unique

properties that make them suitable for all uses

and environments.

We are recognised as innovators within the

sector. The list is a long one: we were the

fi rst company to introduce post-combustion

odour-masking lubricants, the fi rst to release

a dedicated range of two- and four-stroke

scooter products, and the fi rst to make an

0W40 racing oil for increased engine power

output.

We invest a great deal in remaining at the

forefront of continued innovation in lubricants

research, we are able to offer one of the most

What are the qualities for an oil to be JASO MA approved?

For a 4-stroke lubricant to obtain JASO MA standard it must meet the most severe

requirements in terms of lubrication, taking account of the specifi c nature of the motorcycle

where the clutch is generally immersed in oil (anti-slip and friction test).

How to recognise that a product meets JASO MA?

When a product successfully passes all the tests, the Japanese Automotive Standard

Organisation allocates a certifi cate and an accreditation number, which must be shown

on the tin in the form of a specifi c logo (see drawing below).

Other standards

S.A.E. standard – Society of Automotive Engineers, an American Society including automobile constructors and automobile engineers created in

1905 and located in Washington.

The SAE standard defi nes a so-called viscosity grade for each lubricant.

Viscosity characterises the resistance of a fl uid to fl ow which varies with temperature.

The SAE grade enables the fl uidity of the oil to be determined at hot and cold, but does not

provide information on other properties.

The Grades Winter grade/ cold grade: 0WThe cold grade is situated in front of the letter W. It gives the dynamic viscosity at cold:

the capability for starting the engine and operating the oil pump. The lower the cold grade,

the more fl uid the lubricant is at low or negative temperatures. The engine starts easily and

performs better.

Summer grade / hot grade: -40The hot grade gives the kinematic viscosity at hot (100ºC and 150ºC under shear): 20, 30,

40, 50, 60.

• The higher the hot grade, the more the oil is viscous at high temperatures. The engine is

well lubricated, hence protected during intensive use.

• The lower the grade, the better the friction reduction will be when hot. It improves fuel

economy.

The API standards – American Petroleum Institute, an American Institute created in 1936, which includes the American gas and oil industries,

located at Washington.

This standard establishes a classifi cation of oils depending on several criteria such as

dispersive power, detergence, wear resistance or anti-oxidant, anti-corrosion protection.

Depending on its performance, the oil receives a letter after the S (for Service)

for 4-stroke petrol engines: SA, SB, SG, SH, SJ, SL.

The further this letter is in the alphabet, the better the performance.

Oils for 2-stroke engines must satisfy additional requirements: resistance to higher

temperature, solubility in petrol, burning without releasing smoke and without producing

deposits. As for 4-stroke, 2-stroke oil receives a letter after the T: TA, TB and TC.

2 wheeler engines must today use oils of API category TC.

The NMMA standards - National Marine Manufacturer Association, an American Association including constructors of boats, outboard engines and

manufacturers of accessories, created in 1979 in Chicago.

The NMMA standard applies to oils intended for outboard motors. There are 3 levels of

standards: TC-W, TC-W2 and TC-W3 (better dispersivity and lubricating power).

The highest level for a 2-stroke marine oil is NMMA TC-W3.

JASO Standards - Japanese Automotive Standard Organisation.Today the reference standards in the fi eld of motorcycle lubricants are the JASO standards. The JASO standard dealing with 2-stroke must be distinguished from that dealing with 4-stroke.
