Choose for High Turbidity Work
Modernized Aminco DW-2 UV/Vis spectrophotometerThe spectrophotometer for working on P450, mitochondria, plant and tissue suspensions, and other scattering samples. The more turbid the sample, the more this model is needed. The DW-2 uses a large face detector a few millimeters from the sample and measures two wavelengths simultaneously so as to subtract scatter from the chemistry. Olis Polarization ToolboxThis tiny instrument brings together inexpen-sive LED* light sources with a high sensitivity photon counter to create a modern research tool perfect for the pedagogical environment. Supports polarization of fl uorescence (POF), anisotropy (r), and/or circularly polarized lumi-nescence (CPL). Sensitivity, Versatility, Great Value
Olis DM 245 spectrofl uorimeterA more versatile fl uorimeter than the smaller Olis DM 45, the 245 includes one Olis double Hummingbird monochromator for higher wavelength selectivity and lower stray light than is possible with a single grating monochromator. The double can be used on either the excitation or emission side (user selectable); an Olis single grating model is the second monochromator. Light source can be 150 watt xenon arc (shown) or 300 watt version; detector is usually a single photon counter, but a pair of PMTs can be substituted or added for fast emission readings and/or dual beam absorbance acquisition.

Olis DSM 20 CD UV/Vis[NIR] spectrometer The model 20 is built around the Olis Hummingbird monochromator. Of all CDs in the world, this is the smallest. It is (1) designed for use in an amazing diversity in layouts (2) furnishes brilliant light throughput and (3) is completely approachable for students as well as senior staff. The Hummingbird is a subtractive double monochromator, also used in the Olis DB 620 absorbance and Olis DM 245 and 445 fl uorimeters.

Circular Dichroism ModelsExpectation - Exploding Rapid-Scanning
Olis DSM 1000 CD UV/Vis[NIR] rapid-scanning CD spectrometerThe model 1000 is built around a DeSa monochromator, the only rapid-scanning monochromator in the world. Like the model 20, the model 1000 supports maximum modularity and endlessly diverse applications. The F/4.5 monochromator (1) has the highest light throughput of the three choices (2) provides exciting potential for completely novel experiments and (3) is the fi rst choice for those comfortable with higher price tags on premium laboratory instruments. The DeSa “RSM” is a subtractive double grating monochromator capable of millisecond scan rates, also used in the full Olis RSM 1000 line for absorbance and fl uorescence.
This is the only rapid-scanning CD instrument available anywhere. Rapid-scanning is useful for FDCD, CPL, LD, and other secondary measurements for which an Olis DSM 1000 is confi gured. Rapid-scanning is possible throughout all spectral ranges, deep UV to far NIR. Best results presume meaningful signal strength and a modest spectral span.

Olis USA stopped-flow for absorbance and fluorescenceThis cell assembly remains a very useful “classic” choice. The sample flows through a cylindrical optical-grade quartz tube, 20 mm in length and 2 mm in diameter. This was the original design of the Gibson/ Durrum stopped-flow and remains a popular choice for work done at near ambient temperatures. It is suitable for absorbance (20 mm) and fluorescence (2 mm) use. All early stopped-flow was done with this geometry cell, so it is easy to compare results today with earlier work. Also, the signal from such relatively large volume is strong, so that (very) few mul-tiple shots are necessary for excellent signal to noise.
Olis USA stopped-fl ow for absorbance onlyThis model employs a stainless steel flow cell assembly with a 10 mm optical pathlength, half the length of the ‘classic’ choice. It is useful only in one (straight-through) direction, so suited for absorbance readings only.

Olis USA stopped-flow for fluorescence and absorbanceThe fluorescence-optimized stopped-flow cell assembly is a 4 x 4 mm diameter cylinder of UV optimized fused silica (Suprasil) suitable for both absorbance and fluorescence.
Olis USA stopped-fl ow for circular dichroism and absorbanceFor CD, a cylindrical quartz observation cell of 2 mm pathlength is used, duplicating the most commonly employed cuvette style. The dual beam detection model of the three Olis DSM CD spectrometers is fully exploited. Both beams of light from the Olis DSM CDs are used, so that all of the benefits of digital CD data acquisition accrue.

Olis Tonometer AdaptorA tonometer is often made by adding stopcocks to a glass column. This tool is used introduce degassed solvents into an Olis stopped-fl ow’s gastight syringe. Because tonometers are often wider than the 5 mL syringe typically used to introduce solutions into the stopped-fl ow, an adaptor is available which effectively widens the distance between the two inlet ports.

Millisecond Open/Close Shutter BoxAdd a small computer-controlled shutter anywhere within the optical train of any Olis spectrophotometer to turn a steady-state lamp into a pulse lamp with pulse rates to 40 Hz or protect photolabile samples from the excitation or measuring beam between readings.

DeSa 1.4 Tesla Permanent MagnetThis tiny 1.4 Tesla permanent magnetic can be used for MCD, MLD, MCPL, MFDCD, as well as magnetic fi eld absorbance and fl uorescence work. Rotate the DeSa magnet 180° to do reverse fi eld studies. When used for absorbance and CD, the magnet and cuvette are oriented as illustrated. When used for emission readings (CPL, FDCD, and fl uorescence), the magnet rotated 90° and a 1 cm tall cuvette is slid into place, so that the emission travels out what is now illustrated as the top. No power, no water, no crane required to use this powerful magnet! Can be added to any spectrophotometer.

Jacketed Cuvette HolderThe standard Olis cell holder is machined brass with channeling throughout for fl uid concentration around the cuvette from a water bath. The 1 cm² holder removes easily to allow use of the Olis USA stopped-fl ow, QNW Turret 450, or other sample holder. An optional magnetic stir block fi ts within the holder. Ports on all sides of the sample compartment support the addition of secondary detectors and/or actinic sources.
Four Position Cell Changer for Absorbance and FluorescenceThis four position cell holder employs a linear shuffl ing mechanism along with a diagonal geometry which permits use with both absorbance and fl uorescence. The design provides access to clear apertures on all four sides of the cell. Also included are provisions for magnetic stirring of all four cell holders and temperature control of the entire unit by means of external circulating water. Purchase of this unit would include enhanced features in the software to support motorized movement of the cell changer.
Hanging Cuvette HolderJacketed sample and reference cuvette holders are mounted to the underside of the sample compartment lid and water lines are provided for temperature control. The sample cuvette holder has windows on all four sides to allow passage of a fl ash beam and a measuring beam. A round opening in the lid above each cuvette holder allows easy access for inserting and removing sample cuvettes; round plastic lids slip over each of the access holes.

Peltier Controlled Cuvette Holder, Absorbance and FluorescenceQuantum Northwest makes a beautiful cell holder with built-in temperature regulator. The device is exceedingly fast (5-85° in under 5 minutes) and just as remarkably, the conductivity is so good that the sample lags only by a little. The original holder is for 1 cm² cuvettes.

Peltier controlled Six position holder, Absorbance and CDQuantum Northwest makes the LC 600™ for use in absorbance spectrophotometers (including circular dichroism). Magnetic stirring is provided under each cuvette and a dry gas purge may be used to dry gas on the cuvette windows to prevent condensation when working at low temperatures. The LC 600™ also features rapid, precise Peltier control over a wide range of temperatures, variable speed magnetic stirring under each cuvette. Dry gas purging prevents condensation when working at low temperatures. Thermal range is -55 °C to +105 °C, ± 0.02 °C.

Vertex™ Specular Refl ectance Variable Angle Cell HolderFrom the CIC Photonics website: “The Vertex™ Variable Angle Specular Refl ectance Accessory by CIC Photonics has been designed to permit measurements of the refl ectance of a solid sample material while varying the angle of incidence (AOI) of the source illumination. This is accomplished by simultaneously rotating the sample and a fi xed mirror about a point coincident with both planes. The AOI on the sample varies inversely with that on the mirror; the net result is minimal translation of the beam and constant pathlength.”
