Twoversionsofthegameareavailable.Intheleadershipversion,participantsworkinteamstoconstructarover,ledbyateammemberwho(unknowntotherestoftheteam)adoptsoneofthreecontrastingleadershipstyles—traditional(command-and-control),passive,andcollaborative.Eachofthethreestylesengendersverydifferentfeelingsandemotionsamongteammembers.Andtogether,theyprovideaveryrealdemonstrationoftheeffectsdifferent

WhentouseCommonCurrency

Thisgameisaflexible,team-basedactivitythatutilizesawealthofinterpersonalandgroup-process skills. We especially like using it as part of negotiating and strategic planningworkshops.But it’s ideal forawidearrayof training topics.TheFacilitatorGuide includesdebriefs for training in team building, communication, negotiating, strategic planning,decisionmaking,problemsolving, resourcesharing,andmore.Also included isaseparatechange module, which demonstrates the value of cooperative-competition in times ofchange.

DevelopmentoftheGame

The idea for Common Currency came about as the author was exploring the effects ofcompetition on team building. She discovered that very few people were aware of thebeneficialnatureofcompetitionwithinacollaborativeenvironment,soshedecidedtocreateagamethatwoulddemonstratethosebenefits.

Thechallengewastocreateagamethatutilizedthespiritofcooperativecompetitionwhileremaining flexible enough tomeet a variety of training needs. Themost important issueduring development was the use of limited resources to create a heightened sense ofcompetition, while utilizing a process that would require teams to collaboratewith eachother.Thiswasaccomplishedintwoways:first,byprovidinganunequaldistributionofcoins,withadecreasingamountofcoinsasthevaluesincreased;andsecond,byformulatingseveraldata"bits"aboutthecoinsintheformofInformationCards,whichplayerswouldneedto
