Welcome To The Parent Academy

The Parent Academy is a District wide initiative offered FREE to all parents to promote continued cooperation between families, schools and the community. The Parent Academy offers a series of workshops and events aimed to help families stay engaged with their child’s academic and social success.

The Parent Academy recognizes that parents need to make many important decisions throughout their child’s educational career about programs, schools, opportunities and courses. As your child’s most effective advocate, you need to know how these decisions can affect your child’s future. Families who attend Parent Academy activities will gain invaluable knowledge, from preparing their kindergartener for the first day of school to choosing the right courses for their college-bound high school student.

Through the Parent Academy classes, we provide FREE parental development skill-building workshops, specialized parental support, educational events, and activities for families throughout the school year. The Parent Academy offers a variety of courses for parents and the community members ranging from academic support, health care, to emotional and financial management.

The Parent Academy focuses on four primary tracks:

• Home School Connection

• Parenting in the New Millennium

• Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

• Pathway to Family Enhancement

Miami Dade County Public Schools’ M-DCPS workshops are categorized in three tiers:

Student Achievement: Workshops that provide parents and caregivers with the necessary tools to help their children perform better academically. Parents will create a parent portal account to monitor their children’s progress, communicate with teachers and learn how to navigate the school system.

Parents as Advocates: workshops that equip and empower parents and caregivers with resources, practical assistance, emotional encouragement and social networking to better their lives and those of their children.

Personal Growth: Workshops that help parents and caregivers further their skills and knowledge to guide their children’s education effectively.

The Parent Academy is looking for Parent Leaders!

A parent leader is someone who offers support to ot her parents, students, and

teachers; the objective of a parent leader is to en courage other parents and caregivers

to take a leadership role in education. Parent lead ers have fun and have the

opportunity to make long-lasting connections and fr iendships with other committed

parents.

The role of the Parent Leaders is to assist The Parent Academy staff with successful

implementation of the Parent Academy Initiative. They are the role models for parent

engagement, advocating not only for their children, but for other families as well.

Florida Civil Rights Act of 1992 - secures for all individuals within the state freedom from discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, handicap, or marital status.

Title II of the Genetic Information Nondiscriminati on Act of 2008 (GINA) - Prohibits discrimination against employees or applicants because of genetic information.

Veterans are provided re-employment rights in accordance with P.L. 93-508 (Federal Law) and Section 295.07 (Florida Statutes), which stipulate categorical preferences for employment.

In Addition: School Board Policies 1362, 3362, 4362, and 5517 - Prohibit harassment and/or discrimination against students, employees, or applicants on the basis of sex, race, color, ethnic or national origin, religion, marital status, disability, genetic information, age, political beliefs, sexual orientation, gender, gender identification, social and family background, linguistic preference, pregnancy, and any other legally prohibited basis. Retaliation for engaging in a protected activity is also prohibited.
