IAML Annual Conference 1978 in Lisbon 9 7

a historical perspective that encompasses not only a clear view of the past but also a

vision of the future.

Obviously these are not "qualifications" which we can expect to be met by the

educational system in any country, though formal training can help us achieve some

measures of progress. If we are to take qualifications to mean ideals, then there are two

other means we must also follow to achieve them: recruitment of likely candidates from

our schools, libraries, or wherever they may be, and encouragement of personnel to

develop their appropriate capacities to the fullest by both formal and informal means.

Only then will we have a community of really qualified music research librarians.

KATALOG-KOMMISSION

Kaufman organisatorische Vorüberlegungen an.

CATALOG COMMISSION WORKING GROUPS

1. The Working Group on Computer Cataloging met to exchange information on the state of

development of automated cataloging in their countries. Reports given by representatives of Eng land, West Germany, the Netherlands, USA, Sweden, and Denmark were characterized by pessimism from those whose projects were operating and optimism from those whose projects were not yet

operational. A major problem pointed out by the reports was that special problems of processing music are often not sufficiently dealt with in a generalized library system. Therefore music cataloging is often made more difficult and slower. The topic of access to computer catalogs will provide the

basis of the meeting in Salzburg. 2. The Working Group on ISBD(NBM) met twice with the 1ASA Cataloging Committee to discuss

major problems of the standard. It was agreed that the problems made the standard unusable. A letter

was drafted to be sent to the IFLA Cataloging Committee pointing out those problems and requesting either an immediate revision of ISBD(NBM) or the creation of an ISBD for sound recordings. In the

meantime, the two groups will work on solutions to the problems to be discussed in Salzburg regard less of IFLA's response.
