Today, and/or yesterday, is Epiphany in

Western European countries and is also the

day most Russians and many other Eastern

Europeans traditionally celebrate Christmas

Eve.

Harbin, a city in the Northeast of mainland

China, also celebrates its world famous Ice

and Snow Festival at this time of year. The

30th Harbin International Ice and Snow

Sculpture Festival officially started

yesterday on January 5, 2014 and it will be

celebrated until February 28, 2014.

Taichung’s Teddy Bear Carnival

Mark 薛毓庭, a first

year DYU student of

Cultural Creative

Industries, shares a

few of his Teddy Bear

Carnival photos with us.

Teddies always make

me smile and feel

happy and Taichung’s outdoor Teddies

are no exception. They are usually soft

indoor toys covered in fur with glass eyes

but not in Taichung. These teddies have

been very popular with locals. They have

also attracted the fond and curious

interest of quite a few domestic and

international tourists as well. Moreover,

when I first saw them I felt great.

Is Mark really

hugging a wall in

the photo on the

left? Perhaps it

is just a very big

teddy. What do

you think?

Hazel 張育慈, a second year student of

Visual Communication at DYU, on the far

right of the photo below, tells us about

her team’s Christmas party performance.

This semester’s Department of Visual

Communication Christmas party was one I will long remember. It was a very exciting and happy event.

During the Christmas party, one

team from each class performed.

A teacher judged each performance

and gave a score in order to select a

winning team. Every team that

joined in this competition tried

their best to win. Our class was no

exception. We spent many nights

practising for our performance and

although we trained very hard we were

very happy to do so.

We had a lot of fun at the party too. Every

performance was wonderful, but our

performance was the most successful with

our team winning both the Most Popular

Award and First Prize.

Allan 姬傳安, a first year student of

Cultural Creative Industries,

shares a few photos of his trip to

Nantou's Cingjing 清境農場.

Cingjing farm was very beautiful.

There were many sheep. There were also many horses. We enjoyed walking around the farm. It was not only in the mountains but also surrounded by mountains. It had excellent mountain views.

A Christmas party to remember

Nantou’s Cingjing farm

A photo of the winning performance.

This was the first time that I participated in

a major event of the Department of Visual

Communication at DYU. I now think this

department is like a big family. Everyone is

very friendly and I really like that. I am

glad we won first place and I really look

forward to our next party.

Alex 蕭振宇, a first year English

major tells us about his New Year’s

Eve.

On New Year’s Eve, I hurried to

Yuanlin Train Station as soon as my

last class finished. I felt excited

about going to E-Da Theme Park as

soon as I boarded my train to

Kaohsiung. On arrival in Kaohsiung,

I immediately boarded a shuttle bus

to E-Da.

Many thanks!

When the bus entered E-Da it felt like I

was entering a wonderland of beautiful

buildings that included a shopping mall

with coffee shops and restaurants.

There were even some indoor basket-

ball courts! The two five star hotels

were luxurious.

After nightfall, I watched a concert

nearby E-Da’s 80 metre high Ferris

wheel. This concert was followed by

New Year’s Eve fireworks.
