    FPS: Future Problem Solving

The aim of Future Problem Solving is essentially to developcritical, creative and futuristic thinking skills. It challengesstudents to apply their imagination and thinking skills to

some of the significant issues facing both the world of today, and the future, equipping them with the skills and visionneeded to anticipate, comprehend and solve problemsassociated with these issues, helping them to have a positiveimpact in the society of the future. FPSP Australia

But there are critical differences between FPS and FutureTrends, which will be explained in the next few slides ofthebriefing.

    Cat 11: Future Trends

While divergent thinking is highly encouraged,

students must also be able to take on an evaluative

function, hence a balance between originality and

    research is advocated.

Focus on both process (documented research) +

    product (creatively-applied research).

creative activity is made possible by a critical assessment of the existing body ofknowledge K.P. Mohanan, 1997.

ideational flow must also be criticallycensored G. J. W. Smith, 2005.

    1. Brainstorm at least 15 potential problems

    2. Perform research on the 15 potential problems

    - Discard poorest 5

    3. Phrase 10 best potential problems clearly

    - Use FPSP approach

    4. Update online portfolio

    - Portfolio should be aesthetically pleasing, easy to navigate, easy toread. Each piece of research should be evaluated and summarised.Hyperlink evaluation of research to problem.

    5. Select best 5 for presentation

    STEP 2 IDENTIFY FUNDAMENTALPROBLEM

    1. The Fundamental Problem should not simply be

one of the 10 potential problems identified, but

rather a rephrasing and amalgamation ofthemost significant problems.

    2. Consider the impact of the problem, the

influence on the topic, and whether the FP allows

you to be imaginative.3. Express it in the form of a question

Resources (or how/where to find information this is not an

exhaustive list and should not be treated as such)

Best method: Always do a targeted search, e.g. teenage depression, stress from academia (as opposed to generic searches like mentalhealth). While current research can strengthen your argument, it willalways be better if you have evidence that current research can beextrapolated into the future.
