The peninsula of Castle Hill is located on the western-most tip of Newport towards the southern edge of Aquidneck Island, just at the entrance of Narragansett Bay. It is this omniscient location, overseeing the East Passage and the Atlantic, that has secured its varied and notable history.

Prior to European settlement in the 1630s, the native Narragansett Indians built an earthwork here to signal messages to nearby tribes across the bay. After the arrival of the English, an 18th century watchtower was built and later, during the Revolutionary War, a battery of cannons was added to defend against the invading British. In April 1776, these cannons were the final challenge in the chase of the HMS Cimetar and HMS Scarborough out of Narragansett Bay.

As Newport began to grow into a prominent seaport, the wealthy built great architectural tributes to the life of leisure: splendid, many-roomed mansions they called “cottages”. Castle Hill was one of these, a gracious, shingle-style song of a house commissioned by marine biologist and naturalist Alexander Agassiz of Harvard University. Today, the Main Inn is this original summer home of Agassiz, where he kept his eye on the ocean and the sea life within it.

In 1869 plans began for a lighthouse at Castle Hill in order to guide the multiplying ships through the foggy waters of Narragansett Bay. After much resistance, Agassiz relented and sold a portion of his land to the US government for one dollar. The Castle Hill lighthouse was completed and operational in 1890. In March 1988 Castle Hill Light House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today the lighthouse remains an active navigational beacon and welcomes mariners from around the world to Narragansett Bay.

We love to cook! We strive for perfection in every dish, realizing that perfection is achieved when our guests are pleased. It is our honor and pleasure to serve you.

Executive Chef Karsten HartChef Karsten Hart leads Castle Hill’s award-winning culinary team. A former Relais & Chateaux Grand Chef from The Estate by the Elderberries in Oakhurst, California, Chef Hart was one of only 20 chefs in the United States with the ‘Grand Chef ’ designation.

Inspired at an early age by his mother’s cooking, Karsten grew up in Louisiana in a melting pot of cultural influences, with German and Italian parents who loved to cook. Karsten’s first cooking jobs were in small, Cajun-style and Italian restaurants, but he learned the most working in a Chinese eatery where time on the wok station really instilled a passion for learning different cooking techniques.

From its time as the summer playground of American Industrialists, Newport has a storied tradition of entertaining. Tour the magnificent mansions, or ‘summer cottages’ as they were once called of the Wideners, Vanderbilts and Doris Duke.

Throughout the year, diverse musical offerings are abundant. Listen to classical music in the aforementioned mansions, or experience an eclectic mix of national acts who grace the waterfront stage at the annual Sunset Music Series. Best known are the iconic Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals. Held at historic Fort Adams, this is where Dylan plugged in for the first time.

Newport is also home to many galleries, museums and landmarks celebrating its Colonial heritage and its storied nautical history, creating the optimum playground for planning an unforgettable corporate retreat.

Our staff will gladly arrange tee times and transportation for you to enjoy your day out on the course.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame is truly unique in that it is one of the only Hall of Fame sporting venues where the public can actually play tennis on the grounds! Players of every age and any ability level have the opportunity to play tennis on the Hall of Fame’s legendary grass courts, where the first U.S. National Tennis Championships were held in 1881. Tennis champions past and present have graced the Hall of Fame’s courts.

A highlight on the Newport summer calendar, the Newport International Polo Series offers extraordinary fun for your group outing. Located on the grounds of historic Glen Farm in Portsmouth, a pastoral village on the outskirts of Newport, matches are played on a preserved sports ground outlined by miles of fieldstone walls. Whether visiting to enjoy an international match or taking polo and riding lessons on the pristine equestrian grounds, one is sure to be awed by the majesty and splendor of Glen Farm.

In addition, Castle Hill’s rolling lawns are fitting for a variety of lawn sports including croquet, bocce ball and volleyball.

There is no shortage of outdoor pursuits in the Ocean State. Fishing is abundant, whether you want to cast a line off Castle Hill’s rugged coastline, or head out into the bay for some deep sea adventure. Regardless of the season, Aquidneck Island’s beaches and wildlife preserves offer great hiking, snow shoeing and bird watching opportunities.

Surfing has also become a mainstay in Newport culture year round, with spectacular waves coming from the tropical storm season 100 miles off shore in the late summer and early fall. Kayaking can be arranged for your group right at the Castle Hill beach. No matter your sea sport preference, Newport’s shorelines are sure to provide you with an unforgettable experience.

What better way to end your day in Newport than with a bonfire on the beach. Our staff is happy to build an inviting fire along the shore for you and your guests to gather round, keeping warm while stargazing, listening to the soothing sounds of the gently washing waves, and enjoying fireside chats and treats. It is an intimate experience sure to be remembered as the fire faintly lights up the picturesque landscape of Narragansett Bay in a way it can seldom be seen.
