President Daphne expressed thanks to all members who
attended the Seven Club meeting from the previous week. She
also reminded the club of the Rotary Foundation Gala Celebra-
tion March 15th at the Marriott Ventura Beach Hotel. Rotary
Foundation Trustee of Cobuourg,
Ontario will be the guest speaker. Don’t miss this one as Bob
gives one of the best presentations about the amazing progress
for the Rotary polio eradication efforts. (Writers note:
and were involved in some terribly distracting
and dull chit chat that greatly limited the writer’s ability to develop
program notes. Offered for President Daphne’s consideration
would be an appropriate punishment of her choosing.)
CBCC was started by Dr. Ravi Patel in 1984 as a truly compre-

and to discuss the latest
and greatest from their practices at Comprehensive Blood and
Cancer Center (CBCC). Dr. Mukhopadhyay started his medical
practice in Bakersfield in 1978 and joined CBCC in 1995, where he
continues to be actively involved with patient care and clinical
research. He has a special interest in solid tumors and chemother-
apy. Prior to relocating to Bakersfield, he was Clinical Instructor of
Medicine at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He
graduated from Medical School in Calcutta, India and completed a
Residency in internal medicine at Howard University in Washing-
ton, DC.
Dr. Mukhopadhyay lead off with a global perspective on cancer,
providing perhaps some of the most detailed and technical
PowerPoint slides that Downtown Rotary has ever seen. Dr.
Mukhopadyay later focused his presentation on what has become
the fastest growing form of cancer, cervical cancer. He provided
interesting statistical information on the emergence of this cancer
in both the United States and in other countries. Apparently, cervi-
cal cancer is caused by the HPV virus. There are numerous forms
of the virus and as it turns out, the virus is commonly found in men
and women. Two forms of the HPV virus can lead to cervical can-
cer. The good news is that a vaccine has been developed that has
the potential of eradicating cervical cancer. To that end, Dr.
Mukhopadyay challenged the club to reflect on a Rotary project of

nation Project.
Dr. Shambaugh who is originally from Wasco and completed a
fellowship in Medical Oncology and Hematology at Penn State
University joined CBCC in 1994. He then introduced the subject of
treatment and provided a laymen’s view into cancer cells and the
treatment of cancerous cells. Numerous graphics were presented
that illustrated the inner workings of cancer cells and the various
treatment options along with an explanation for how and why
various forms of treatment work.
Certainly all of us have been touched by cancer in some way.
The local community owes many thanks to Dr. Shambaugh and Dr.
Mukhopadhyay for their professional dedication and work CBCC.
Happy Birthday!“I’m so lucky to know so many wonderful, thoughtful and generous
Rotarians. You certainly know how to put “Happy” in Happy Birth-
day. My thanks to each and every one of you.
