SPRING & SUMMER 2013 Spruce Forest Artisan Village - 177 Casselman Road - Grantsville, MD 21536 Casselman River Bridge Bicentennial Events Planned The Casselman River Bridge was erected in 1813, at the time it was the longest single span stone arch bridge in the United States. It would serve as an important link on the National Road from 1813 to 1933, although it is no longer open to vehicular traffic it is accessible to pedestrians. The Casselman River Bridge State Park sits on the western side of the bridge and Spruce Forest Artisan Village sits on the eastern side. The 200th Anniversary of the Casselman River Bridge will be celebrated over the course of 3 days in September 2013. Festivities will kickoff on Friday September 20th with a dinner at the historic stage coach stop, Penn Alps Restaurant, in Grantsville, MD. There will be a special guest speaker and tickets will be pre-purchase, additional details will be available closer to event date. Saturday’s events will begin with a second ticketed meal & guest speaker, this time at another National Road landmark, The Casselman Inn & Restaurant. Throughout the day there will be children’s events, re- enactors, live music, food vendors, a Plein Air Art competition, a living history parade and much more going on throughout the town of Grantsville, Spruce Forest Artisan Village and Casselman Bridge State Park. The formal Bicentennial ceremony will take place at 7:00 PM Saturday evening at the bridge and include a ribbon cutting ceremony and guest speakers. Events will continue on Sunday with another hosted brunch, details to be announced closer to event date. The Plein Air tent will be open for People’s Choice judging and public viewing all day. The Casselman River Bridge Bicentennial celebration will commence on Sunday the 22nd with the Plein Air Awards at 6:30 PM in Spruce Forest Artisan Village at the Plein Air tent. The Plein Air art competition will be the first one of it’s kind to be hosted by Spruce Forest Artisan Village, it will be a wonderful way to help celebrate the many beautiful perspectives of this National Historic Landmark. Artist registration is free but there is a deadline date of September 1, 2013. Registered artist are invited to bring one previously completed work for exhibit in the large tent that will be set up on the Village grounds. All previously completed works may be placed for sale with a 25% donation of the sale going to Spruce Forest Artisan Village. Artist are to check in Saturday the 21st between 8:30 & 9:30 AM. Previously completed work will be on display in the large tent throughout Saturday and competition works completed on Saturday will be included for exhibit throughout Sunday. There will be three People’s Choice awards: First place will be $300, Second Place is $200 and there will be another $100 People’s Choice Award for the previously completed works. Voting will close on Sunday the 22nd at 5:30 PM and awards will be announced at 6:30 PM. All works will need to be collected between 6:30 & 8:00 PM on September 22nd. Spruce Forest Artisan Village serves a unique purpose in the Allegheny region. Here in the heart of what was once known as Little Crossings, artists have developed designs, genres, and even media specific to this area. Spruce Forest is a venue not only where artists showcase and sell their work, but also where visitors have the chance to interact with artisans inside their studios. Six resident artists and many visiting artists share their stories, technical advice, and creative processes with our audience of 60,000 each year.

Little Crossings still boasts an original inn dating back to 1818, the historic Casselman Bridge, and thirteen restored cabins, including Compton’s One-Room School House, where schoolchildren today can experience life in a schoolhouse of yesterday.

Workshops offered within Spruce Forest Artisan Village are vital to the ongoing development of the Village’s outreach within the arts community. For 2013 there are a number of returning workshops from our resident artists and several new ones being offered by visiting guest artists. These workshops are designed to be small group settings where students can get hands-on instruction with local professional artists. The Riverview Clay Studio will be hosting “Mold Making for Ceramics” and “Clay Camp 2013” this summer. In “Mold Making” students will learn the best design and practice for making plaster molds for ceramics. The workshop will take place over 3 days from June 28-30: Friday 6:30-8pm, Saturday & Sunday 10am -4 pm. “Clay Camp” is designed for 8-11 year olds and will take place from 9am-Noon Monday July 8th- Friday July 12th. Campers will lean basic hand building techniques. Projects will include tiles, masks, pinch pots, and clay critters. Registration is $125 for each camper, which includes all materials, a healthy snack and interaction with professional artist in various media each day. A returning guest artist and Spruce Forest Board of Directors Interim President, Reita Marks, will be hosting a series of paper quilling workshops again this year. Paper quiling is an art form dating back to the 10th-12th Centuries and is the rolling of narrow strips of paper to form designs, often quite intricate. The workshops are a day each, 9:30 am - 3:30 pm, and are designed for beginners. The registration fee is $35 and will include all materials- however some supplies the student will need to bring: small scissors, ruler, and patience! Resident weaver, Ann Jones, has June 7-9, August 4-6, and October 27-29 set aside for her popular “Beginning Weaving Workshop” during which students will receive an introduction to weaving on a four shaft loom in a very small group setting. As a follow up to the beginning workshop, students can plan ahead and

register for Ann’s “Advanced Beginning Weaving” workshop scheduled for August 11-13 and November 1-3. For additional information or to register please contact Ann directly at 301-895-3159 or [email protected].

Guest Artist, Elizabeth Braun will be offering two very unique glass workshops. September 7-8th is a “Tiffany Style” Glass Panel Workshop and October 12-13th is a “Glass Fusion” workshop. These both offer a chance to get hands on experience with glass work and be able to take something home with you at the end of the weekend. Award winning bird carver and longtime resident artist, Gary Yoder, will once again be offering his Feather Carving Workshops. This year there will be several 1 and 2 day workshops for Kingfisher, Hummingbird, Wood Duck, and Pintail feathers. Resident metal smith, Doug Salmon, has put together 3 weekend workshops this summer. In “Jewlery Fabrication” students will learn elementary techniques for creating three-dimensional jewelry designs; it will be offered July 6-7th and August 17-18th. Doug will also be teaching a “Silver Jewlery” workshop on July 27-28th that will focus on beginning work in silver, including soldering, fabrication techniques, and Precious Metals Clay. A new workshop, “Special Occasion Cards,” will be taught by Sandra Harriette on July 18th. This afternoon workshop is designed for all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). Registration and additional information is available through Spruce Forest at 301-895-3332.

Gene Gillespie, the resident woodturner, is offering a “Basic Woodturning: Ball Point Pen” workshop on Friday August 16th from 10 am - 4 pm. In this one day workshop you will learn basic techniques of working on a lathe and create a ball point pen. To register or for more information please contact Gene at 540-336-5127.

New Village Event scheduled for Saturday June 15th, 2013

Family DayGuest Artist Program for 2013

Guest Artist, Elizabeth Braun, is shown working on a template for a glass piece. She will be visiting with the Village in September and October and is also offering two workshops while here.

Spruce Forest has studio space for three visiting artists per month during the summer and fall season. Guest artists pay a small fee that covers utilities, but then have access to the studio seven days a week for the month. Resident and guest artist studios must be open and artists working on their craft 5 days a week, during which time artists may sell their wares. For the upcoming 2013 season the following artists have been scheduled: Shelly Booska, Elizabeth Braun, Shelia Brown, Cindy Inman, Lenore Lancaster, Reita Marks, Joan Miller, and Dr. Karel Schubert.

Shelley Booska, owner of Four Seasons Stitchery in Grantsville, MD will be visiting the Village for June, July & August with a variety of quilts and other needful things. Her and a team of quilters will be in the Red Shed (to the right of the Village entrance) and will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM - 5 PM all summer long. The selection will change constantly as the five participating quilters will be adding new wall hangings, quilts, baby quilts, placemats, runners, quilted pictures, and much more regularly.

Elizabeth Braun will be visiting the Village for September and October, her guest studio will be the Red Shed. She is a glass artist who began her training in stained glass at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts, Aix en Provence, France in 1981. In 1986 she founded Elizabeth’s Glassworks, a custom art glass studio. Elizabeth will also be hosting two weekend long workshops

while here, one in stained glass and one in glass fusion

Shelia Brown, a basket weaver, is a returning guest artist to the Village and will be in the Hochstetler House during the month of July. Shelia comes from nearby Preston County, WV and she has been basket weaving for over 25 years. She currently has over 150 designs and also takes custom orders.

Cindy Inman is a painter specializing in acrylic paint on unique surfaces, such as feathers. She will be in Alta’s Cabin during the month of July.

Lenore Lancaster, a Prisma colored pencil artist and returning guest artist will be in Alta’s Cabin August through October. Lenore does intricate colored pencil work of a variety of subjects. She offers private afternoon workshops while in residency at the Village and will schedule those upon request. Please contact Lenore at 304-738-3180 for more information.

Reita Marks will be here again this year with her Paper Quiling throughout the summer in the Hochstetler House. While here Reita will offer several one-day Paper Quiling workshops, scheduled for July 10th, 20th, and 31st.

Joan Miller does Scherenshnitte, the art of paper cutting. She will be in the Hochstetler House during October.

Dr. Karel Schubert will be joining the Village again this summer, from August 9th to September 9th he will be in the Hochstetler House displaying his photography.
