Mr Moar, Relieving Principal’s Report

This week we have been lucky enough to meet our

Year 7 for 2019. On Monday afternoon parents came

and experienced lessons in PDHPE, English, Agriculture,

HSIE and LEAP. It was great to see the number of

parents who supported this and it was nice to receive

some positive feedback from those that attended.

On Tuesday close to 140 Year 6 students from our

primary schools participated in Orientation Day. They

toured the school, participated in lessons and watched

a concert featuring some of our talented students. A

special thanks to Bridget Swan who coordinated the

programs during the week and also to the staff and

students who volunteered their time to ensure that the

visiting students had a positive start to life at Casino

High School.

I would like to congratulate three students who have

recently been successful in obtaining school based

traineeships with Richmond Valley Council. This is a

fantastic opportunity for these students which provides

students with on the job training whilst still completing

their HSC. The three students are:

Phoebe McMillan in Business

Isaiah Freeburn in Rural Operations

Bryce Chapman in Electrotechnology

I would also like to thank our Careers Adviser, Jaimie

Weir who has assisted these students and continues to

work with students in years 10,11 and 12 to access work

opportunities and experience in the local area.

The final day for students this year is Wednesday 19th

December. We have organised an activities day which

provides students with the chance to see a movie in

Kyogle and then spend the afternoon at the pool in

Casino. Notes for this have been available for some

weeks and we encourage all students to participate

and make the last day of the school year an enjoyable

one. To make this day a success we need students to

return notes as soon as possible so that appropriate

bookings can be made.

Science and Engineering Challenge 2018

Individually We Achieve, Together We Excel

The chosen few representing this fine bastion of education and discipline travelled to Southern Cross University on Thursday

21st June to participate in the Science and Engineering Challenge and to have a bit of fun. The elite of Casino High School

accepted the invitation to compete in the far off East. It was actually held in a small hamlet called Lismore.

The students had a long drive that morning and were surprised to see how big this hamlet actually was. Unfortunately when

they got there it was cold and a grey sky greeted them. Coming from the land of eternal summer, our hand-picked students

were tired, homesick, shivering and bewildered, not just at the rustic sights of the town, but at the inhabitants.

At first we thought there was some sort of travelling circus in town, but we were reliably informed that it was just a normal

Thursday. There was a bit of a language barrier to overcome in this eastern Provence. Fortunately our students are worldly

wise enough to know the tried and tested technique of TALKING LOUDLY and pointing.

It took our most gifted and talented students a little while to assimilate to the rarefied atmosphere of the area and so it was

a slow start from all. However Mary-Anne Gill and Maddison Smith made a formidable team, working out how to provide

power to various towns in the ‘Electricity’ activity.

Georgia Burston and Bailey Powell showed the rest that the key to success is teamwork in the designing and building of a

bionic hand in the ‘Grasping at Straws’ activity.

McKenzie Llewellyn and Hayley Creighton persevered and exhibited the never give up spirit of Casino High School by

developing rail networks in the most efficient way possible in the Stringways activity.

Phoebe McMillan and Jesse Noll proved the age old adage that Casino High School expects high expectations from their

students, while designing and building a turbine. Proving once again that Casino know how and engineering is the best there

is.

Piper Fletcher, Lani Fraser and Declan Ellis personified the motto ‘individually we achieve together we excel’, by

communicating with each other using various coloured lights in the Confounding Communications Activity.

Briellen Keenes and Jasmyn Thomas did a sterling job designing a tower from basic materials, this activity was obviously

heavily biased to those students who live in areas other than the Casino High School area that are prone to flooding. At the

end of the judging we therefore put in an appeal and the school has tendered written submissions including a reference to

this, the matter will be heard in Lismore, with a date yet to be set.

Isabellah Smith, Tamara Smidt and Noah Carroll worked as a well-oiled machine proving that if you want a job done well, get

a Casino High school team in, by building a catapult. Theirs very nearly fired a tennis ball half way to Casino, well 24m

actually which was a challenge record and it was also accurate. This just left Shaun Porter and Blair Haynes who used their

skills in innovation and design to ‘Build a Bridge’ from balsa, tape and paddlepop sticks. Their bridge was very light and

strong. The challenge was to test it to destruction by rolling cars of various weights over it. The bridge appeared to the judges

to fold after three runs, however the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) footage would have shown otherwise. Unfortunately in

such a rural backwater there was no such technology available.

The best that Casino High School can offer are very representative of the people of Casino. Casino may be a financially

challenged community, but they are courteous, hardworking and generous. They know how to support each other

particularly the underdog and personify the friendly easy going, socially aware, fair reputation that Australians have

worldwide.

Everyone who took part had a very good go, the level of commitment, dedication and team work was better than anything

that I have ever witnessed. They are all deadly!

Science News

Individually We Achieve, Together We Excel

Year 9 Science 1 have been

learning about how the

human body is controlled

by the nervous system.

To help them understand

the structure of nerves

they made models of

nerves using pipe-

cleaners and completed a

poster about nerve

structure.

Year 12 Biology completed their first assessment task about the structure of DNA. They were required to

make a 3-D model that accurately represents DNA structure.

Career News

Individually We Achieve, Together We Excel

Did you know there is a Casino High School Careers website? www.chscareers.com.au

It has been designed to provide information about selecting school subjects, senior year

pathways, post school options, study tips, HSC, local employment opportunities, VET

and university. It provides useful tips about applying for Tax File Numbers, the school

process for work experience, scholarships and designing your own resume!

There is also our Careers Facebook page which provides current news and

opportunities. If you need more information, please contact the Career Adviser

Mrs Weir.

Plan to be there about 10 minutes early

Go in to the interview by yourself – don’t have your parent or friend with you

First impressions count – practice saying ‘hello’ and shaking hands

Practice before hand with a friend or family member

Aim to speak clearly, take a breath before answering, and make eye contact with the interviewer

Always be positive – don’t make negative comments about a previous employer…it is an experience and practice makes perfect!
