W hen the air conditioning system at t he Texas Department of Transportations (DOT) Houston Annexbroke down during a hot Houston summer, officials seized the opportunity t o upgrade the HVAC equip-ment. They w anted equipment that could provide reliable, round-the-clock cooling under demandingconditions. In addition, they w anted equipment that w as energy efficient, environmentally responsi-ble, quiet and compatible with their existing Carrier Comfort Network (CCN) controls.

Carriers air-cooled Ecologic screw chiller, used in conjunction w ith existing CCN controls, helpedthe Texas DOT cut energy costs at the Houston annex in half. The four-st ory 35,000 sq. ft. building isnoticeably cooler wit h the new equipment. The state agency w as proud to be the first installat ion sitein N orth Am erica for t he air-cooled Ecologic chiller, w hich uses environmentally responsible, chlorine-free refrigerant HFC-134a.

The Houston distr ict of the Texas DOT is the largest distr ict in a large state w ith the very large job ofkeeping traff ic moving throughout the sprawling metropolis. Keeping its 300 employees cool, comfortableand productive in the citys hot cl imate is both a challenge and a necessity. So when t he air conditioningsystem at the four-story 35,000 sq. ft. Houston annex broke down, off icials immediat ely moved to upgradethe HVAC system. HVAC M echanical set up a temporary system w hile preparations were made to installthe new system. The facil i ty team was looking for equipment that w as reliable, eff icient and environmen-tally responsible. And because the chil ler pad sits outside the buildings conference room, sound w asa key consideration.

Proactive about environmental issues, the department chose Carriers air-cooled Ecologic screw chil ler, engineered from the ground up t o use the chlorine-free refrigerant HFC-134a. The Ecologic features low -noise 06N tw in-screw compressors and aeroacoustic fans, ensuring quiet operation and low vibration reducing complaints from tenants and neighbors. Its compact design, w ith a footprint up to 50% smallerthan most of the chil lers it replaces, makes it easy for contractors to rig and set up.

Another decision driver w as the fact that the chil ler w as compatible w ith Carrier Comfort Net w ork (CCN)controls, already installed at t he Houston annex. The Ecologic chil ler features cable-ready boards to makethe connection easy. M uch l ike the traff ic alert systems used by the DOT to direct motorists to less con-gested roadw ays, CCN alerts the building manager to potential problems before they become big problems, helping to direct cooling where it s needed most. This equipment helps us to save up to 50% on energycosts, key for a state government department intent on doing more for the taxpayers w hile saving themmoney, said O.D. Shelton, building manager f or the Houston distr ict of the Texas DOT.

Less than an hour after the Ecologics start-up, the four-story building w as noticeably cooler and the t raff ic

engineering, road, and building maintenance personnel much happier. W hen you combine the chlorine-free refrigerant, low sound levels, smaller footprint, controls compatibil i ty and overall reliabil i ty, you have acant miss system, said Bruce Orcutt, systems sales consultant f or Houston distr ibutorship AutomaticEquipment Sales. It s a very impressive system.
