A Leap into Stadium Segment
Honeywell Building Solutions catapulted the Wankhede
Stadium into a world class safe and secure sports facility.
High quality security and life safety management solutions—
including integration of video, voice and data communication
technologies on one common network —were delivered in
stringent project timelines.
The CustomerWankhede Stadium, established in the year
1974, is one of the well-known historical
cricket grounds of India. Built on an area
that can accommodate up to 40,000
spectators, the stadium has been a
battleground of several bitterly contested
cricket games. The stadium has also been a
witness to great innings played by legendary
cricketers of the bygone era like Sunil
Gavaskar, Clive Llyod and Elwin Kalicharan.
In early 2011, the stadium went through a
major revamp work to facilitate the final
contest of the ICC Cricket World Cup
tournament, fought between India and
Srilanka. The Mumbai Cricket Association
(MCA), the foremost authority behind the
major cricket happenings in Mumbai, has
been the driving force behind the dramatic
makeover of the stadium. Honeywell
Building Solutions (HBS), chosen over
competitors for its brand, credibility in the
market, world class products and highly
experienced project execution team, was
the main player that converted the MCA’s
ambitious vision into reality.
The ChallengeCricket in India is like a religion. On April 2,
2011, over 33,000 spectators were
expected to witness this historical cricket
battle between India and Srilanka in the
Wankhede stadium. Among the spectators
would be the respective Presidents of both
the countries and several renowned
personalities from the political, media and
film fraternity.
MCA had a huge responsibility before the
event. Memories of 26/11 were still fresh in
the minds of Mumbai citizens. Security
threats loomed largely from the extremist
groups. Tight security measures were to
be implemented to ensure foolproof
security. In addition, proper evacuation
facility was to be implemented in the event
of any untoward incident or fire hazard.
MCA was in no position to take any
chances on security aspect since any
lapse could have been fatal. Great need
was felt for implementing the state-of-the-
art security surveillance facility, which
would be useful not only for this particular
event but also for all the future events to
be hosted in the stadium.
The biggest challenge was the
unbelievably short time in which all
activities were to be completed. Project
was awarded to HBS in October 2010,
and was expected to be completed in all
respect, with testing and commissioning
activities, before 1st league match on
March 13, 2011. After all the engineering
approvals and procurement activities were
completed, HBS commenced actual work
at site in middle of November. Practically
HBS had only four months to carry out
installation and commissioning activity,
which included the major challenge of
laying 250 kilometers of cable and
installation of systems like Public Address
System, CCTV, Building Management
System, Access Control System, Fire
Alarm System, etc. The BMS rooms and
HUB rooms for critical installations were
handed over to HBS in the month of
February, which reduced the project time
span further. Prolonged monsoon too
acted as a deterrent.
The SolutionHBS was the main supplier on the project.
Rigorous timelines were set to achieve the
mammoth target. In just four months time,
HBS team laid around 275 km of cable
and commissioned 268 cameras, 4 UPS
systems, 350 smoke detectors, 3 fire
alarm panels and around 270 data points.
Moreover, a digital PA system with 300
speakers was supplied and
commissioned, which also included
installation of 16 line array speakers on
ground perimeter.
Spectator Management System
HBS also implemented a foolproof
spectator management system. High
resolution cameras were installed on every
turnstile to capture the movement of each
spectator entering the stadium. All
recorded images were captured and
stored in the database for future records.
Security Installations
Fire alarm system, PA System, CCTV
Surveillance, EPABX, UPS, CATV (Cable
TV), Networking, Guard tour, Access
Control System, and BMS System—
were done within the timelines set
in the beginning.
Not a single activity missed the agreed
timeline and the full-fledged running stadium
was made available to MCA on time.
Installation Description
CCTV System
• 228 cameras were installed throughout the stadium.
• 210 cameras were installed inside the stadium including staircase, lobbies, etc.
• 15 PTZ cameras were installed in the periphery of the stadium, monitoring the external boundaries.

Building ManagementSystem
Building Management System was installed to monitor critical services like UPS, Air Conditioners,Lifts, Water Management System, etc. Central BMS was installed at the BMS room.
UPSHBS supplied and commissioned 4 UPS to supply power to critical services like CCTV, PublicAddress System and Fire Alarm System. HBS provided and carried out entire cabling along with allthe accessories required.
Network StructuredCabling
HBS carried out entire SITC of structured cabling along with all the passive devices such as fiberports, patch cords, etc.

Key BenefitsThe marathon effort generated accolades
from every quarter. MCA greatly recognized
the huge effort that went into the successful
and timely execution of the task. Mumbai
Police also appreciated the foolproof
security installations that ensured safety.
Prior to the intervention of HBS, all the
Security Surveillance and Public Address
Systems used to be hired on rental basis
for a particular event. With the state-of-
the-art IBMS system in place now,
Wankhede’s security capabilities have
increased greatly.
The new Security Surveillance and the
Public Address System are specifically going
to be a great value addition not only to MCA
but also to the Mumbai Police department
for identifying and tracking any specific
incident. The Public Address System will
help the Police make mass announcements
and give instructions to spectators. The
Building Management System will help
monitor the health of critical systems like
elevators, UPS, flood lights, ACs, Water
Management System, etc.
With the success at the Wankhede
Stadium, Honeywell Building Solutions has
reaffirmed its position as a leader in
integrated building, security and life safety
management business.
