BackgroundEpsom and Ewell High School is the rst school in the UK to have a
SchoolVision lighting system tted to improve the learning
environment or pupils. And results rom a recently released pilot study
show that the Philips SchoolVision lighting system positively impacts
pupils concentration levels.
The solutionSchoolVision has been specically designed to enhance the learning
environment in schools. Lighting has been shown to have a signicant
eect on our mood, our energy levels and our ability to concentrate.
Oering our dierent light settings, SchoolVision is based on the idea
that dierent tasks require dierent levels o energy/concentration.
SchoolVisions our settings - Normal, Energy, Focus and Calm
support the rhythm o activity within the classroom through changing
patterns o warm light and daylight. SchoolVision allows the teacher to
control the classroom atmosphere and create exactly the right
ambience and mood - whatever the time o day, whatever the lesson.
In the Normal setting, standard light levels help pupils to pay atten-
tion; suitable or regular classroom activities. The cool resh light in the
Energy setting helps invigorate pupils early morning or ater lunch. For
challenging tasks, tests or exams the resh, bright light in the Focus
setting aids concentration. And nally, the warm light in the Calm
setting brings a relaxing ambience to individual work or quiet time.
SchoolVision was installed in two o the schools science laboratories
beore the start o term in September 2010. Since then, City University
London has carried out a series o standard D2 Test Trials; a standard
psychometric test to measure concentration, as well as ocus group
research with teachers and pupils.
The study has delivered the ol lowing results:
Year 7 pupils in one of the SchoolVision classrooms saw their scores
on the D2 tests increase by 17 points (D2 test mean percentile score)
Year 7 pupils in the other SchoolVision classroom improved their
scores by 40 points (D2 test mean percentile score)
A control group demonstrated no improvement in concentration
levels over the same time rame
Commenting on how SchoolVision benets both teachers and pupils,
lead researcher Dr Erosyni Konstantinou rom City University Londons
Centre or Perormance at Work, highlights that, more than anything,
dierent students have dierent learning needs.
An adjustable, exible lighting system that can be modied to
acilitate the diverse preerences o the students is ideal or improved
learning in the class room. On the whole, in qualitative interviews,
both students and teachers noted how the lighting changes positively
impacted the mood in the classroom. The benets associated with the
dierent SchoolVision lighting settings included better concentration,
increased alertness, enhanced efciency and a calmer mood which
indicate that the SchoolVision can be the beginning to a new way o
teaching and learning or uture student generations, concludes Dr
Konstantinou.
The ndings echo those rom other research into the eects o the
SchoolVision lighting system. A year long study in a primary school in
Hamburg, Germany ound that, with the SchoolVision lighting system,
pupil reading speeds increased by 35%, requency o errors ell by
almost 45% and restlessness was reduced by 75%.
