Rapid PrototypingRapid prototyping is our unique approach for developing many different ideas very early in the process and using those alternative ideas to inform the design. In conjunction with other brainstorming techniques, we use this process with the project stakeholders, who become active participants in the design, rather than passive observers of its results.
Organize by critical adjacencies
Define larger space groupings
We use 3D computer modeling and traditional hand sketching as the primary tools for facilitating this process because they allow us to quickly generate variations and evaluate alternatives from different perspectives. These services can be provided in a cost-effective manner and generally save significant dollars during construction.
Because new ideas tend to flow from old ones, we look at variations by quickly developing each idea in a simplified 3D model. These sessions are very effective at engaging the users, and work that requires weeks in traditional design can often be accomplished in a two or three hour session.
Since the users are engaged, the solutions that come out of the process have immediate buy in, and consensus among a diverse group of stakeholders is usually achieved early, making the entire design process more efficient.
Examine and Refine Multiple Conceptual Designs
Options for overall building organization
Start with concept client used to get board approval for the project
Atrium as hub to link labs, offices and pilot plant
Lab/office building organized as a long linear slab
Rotate facility to open views from existing building
Closer adjacency with administration facility
Stack labs and offices over the pilot plant
Labs and offices sandwiched between manufacturing and pilot plant
“L” shaped office/lab wing
Rotate office/lab wing
Approved scheme combines best features of multiple schemes
“T” shaped lab/office wing
Combine “L” shape with rotation and incorporate atrium as circulation hub
Interactive planning of individual lab groups
Plan for the Space at Hand
Use planning module, casework and equipment ‘kit of parts’
Synergies between spaces led to efficiency and area reduction Stacking options: combine detail lab layouts with office plans
Make the Most of Daylight and Views
Maximize daylight & views while controlling heat gain & solar glare
