Sustainable Case Study (one story to be added at the end of each chapter) FROM MOBY DICK TO SUBTAINABLE FISHING ON THE ISLAND OF NATUCKET Nantucket Island is south eastern island of Mass. This island is famous for the whaling and the Story of Moby Dick and the families that have come from this island like the Macy, and Starbucks Families that are household names today. Perhaps is should also be famous for scallops in the harbor. The harbor of this island is protected from the harsh waves by the eastern shore. This bay has produced high quality and quantity of scallops for hundreds o years. The island has created a sustainable location for a 3 million dollar industry that shipped all ov the world. But the demand for this product was not high until recent. Lobsters from the northern bay are as famous as the Whale stories. The people of this island have adapted in the spirit of survival and success driving the legacy of the American dream f er . A man from Nantucket name Charles II Sayles owns a retail shop and fishing boats out of Plymouth Rock who stands 6’8” and looks like a Nordic sailor. He and his son and his father prior all named Charles have lived in this community adapting and supporting the sustainability of the seafood industry. Located on the wharf on Washington Avenue this family has supplied the Nantucket chefs, families and the thousands of visitors with high quality fresh seafood. Fresh Scallops, Lobsters, Mussels, Clams and all the Atlantic favorites the families and chefs enjoy. Charles is a soft spoken man that knows his business well. Chefs and customers who rely on their purveyors for high quality, consistent products need to get to know there suppliers. A Chef or manager with strong relationship with the family that has direct ties to the products and the supply will be informed to make wise purchasing choices. The start of a sustainability success is about relationships. Make friends with a fisherman and make a difference on the food supply. 1
