CASE STUDY
When a landslip affected a 30m high
slope above the B4286 at Cwmafon,
South Wales, Remedy Geotechnics
worked with contractor Quantum
Geotechnical and Neath Port Talbot
Council to stabilise the slope. The land-
slip had prompted a partial road closure
and Neath Port Talbot Council needed
the road reopened as quickly as
possible. Working with key stakeholders,
in particular the local authority, Remedy
was able to get fast track for ground
investigation and preliminary nail testing.
Detailed design and Category 2 checking
quickly followed.
Paying close attention to keeping costs
down whilst maximising efficiency, a high
strength Geobrugg Tecco G65/3 steel
mesh facing was secured to the
underlying sandstone bedrock with
self-drilling bar product which enabled
the upper nails to be installed using
roped access techniques - the only
practical way the facing mesh could
be secured at height.
On the lower parts of the slope a long
reach excavator attachment was
used.
Following the success of the work,
Remedy was pleased to see the slope
secured and the road fully open.

A rapid response to a demanding landslip
situation partially blocking a key road.
A translational slope failure had deposited a
significant amount of debris onto the B4286
entering Cwmafon, leading to major traffic
disruption.
Fast track design and securing Technical
Approval for soil nailing/rock bolting to retain a
high strength facing mesh, which secured the
slope against future failure and debris fall.
