Case study: PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT PROJECT

NGO:
• Stree Mukti Sanghatana(SMS) - works actively with women rag pickers and affiliated to the BMC
• Contract signed on March 2014 ₋ sachet waste + food packets ₋ 235 housing colonies, 12 colleges, 10 hotels & 9 banks ₋ 2 health camps + 2 awareness campaigns
• A zero waste project that incentivizes rag pickers
to collect multi layer flexible plastic waste which can then be recycled into useful products

AREA COVERED BY RAGPICKERS • Mumbai is divided into 26
wards • Area covered by us: 13
wards (50% of Mumbai)
• 200 women rag pickers involved
• Till date collected: 766 kilos of multi layer waste

• A Polycrack machine converts multi layer waste into fuel oil
• Test conducted : 22 September 2014
• Four step process Bailing Polycrack (reverse polymerization) Passing through catalyst Condensation
100 kilograms of waste = 60 kilos of fuel oil
Results: ZERO WASTE – LOW COST Project
60% fuel oil Re-sale value : INR 50 – INR 55 per kilo
20% carbon powder Re-sale value: INR 4 per kilo
15% LPG + 5% water is used again in the same machine

• Based in Pune • Converts plastic waste into
fuel by Gasolysis • Cost: 50 kilo plant - INR 15 lacs 200 kilo plant- INR 20 lacs • Sludge released as a by-
product has a re-sale value of INR 100 per kilo

• Explore a collaboration with Mumbai BMC
• Expand collection to all wards of Mumbai
• Install a recycling machine in Mumbai
• Pilot will be expanded to Pune New Delhi Kolkatta
