CASE STUDY STONE SOUP CONSULTING CASE STUDY: Organizational Health Check and Development Action Plan for Fundação Maio Biodiversidade Client: MAVA Foundation Location: Cape Verde, 2017-2018 Consultant: Rosa Matos The challenge The MAVA Foundation supports biodiversity conservation through funding and working closely with selected implementing partners in the Mediterranean, Coastal West Africa and Switzerland. MAVA seeks to secure projects’ impact and strengthen key partners to continue their work once its grant making closes in 2022. Several organizations are therefore undergoing customized organizational development processes, such as Fundação Maio Biodiversidade (FMB), in Cape Verde. Stone Soup was asked to collaborate with MAVA, FMB, and Fauna and Flora International through the elaboration of an Organizational Development Action Plan, to increase the organizational capacity of FMB and work towards its technical, managerial and financial sustainability. The process The organizational development process of FMB comprised two main stages – the Organizational Health Check and the Development Action Plan. For the organizational health-check, we adopted an interpretive and participatory approach, by integrating multiple perspectives regarding main organizational components through desk review, interviews, surveys, site visits, direct observation and a semi-structured debate with key stakeholders in a participatory health-check workshop. After joint discussion of the Organizational Health-check Report’s findings and recommendations for improvement, the Organizational Development Action Plan was defined collaboratively through successive work sessions and a participatory workshop involving a significant part of the organization. The results The Organizational Health-check made it possible to characterize key strengths, critical challenges and opportunities for the development of FMB, through recommendations to be considered in the following stage. The final development Action Plan is a comprehensive, achievable and realistic plan, which is in line with FMB’s context, current situation and opportunities for future growth. The Action Plan points the way to the future by defining the necessary organizational change actions to be undertaken sequentially towards a phase of greater maturity and stability. The future FMB’s organizational development process, now entering the implementation stage of its Action Plan, with continued support from Stone Soup, has generated important learnings and concrete immediate changes, but it is part of a broader and long-term change process, which the organization will have to be able to nurture and sustain continuously. The coming years represent a unique opportunity for Fundação Maio Biodiversidade to continue strengthening its organizational and work capacity and to reaffirm its potential to become a fully functional and sustainable organization. STONE SOUP CONSULTING CASE STUDY: Organizational Health Check and Development Action Plan for Fundação Maio Biodiversidade Client: MAVA Foundation Location: Cape Verde, 2017-2018 Consultant: Rosa Matos

The challenge The MAVA Foundation supports biodiversity conservation through funding and working closely with selected implementing partners in the Mediterranean, Coastal West Africa and Switzerland.
