LOCATION:The management development institute (mdi) is located at the junction of Mehrauli road and Jaipur bypass near Gurgaon. Sponsored by the industrial finance corporation of India, the institute is built on 36 acre site.

OBJECTIVE TO STUDY…

MDI, Gurgaon is among the top 10 business schools of India.

• Study the campus layout and the zoning of the academic, administrative and residential areas in an institute.

• Spatial planning of the various academic areas in a non-architectural institute.

COMPONENTS OF THE CAMPUS• ACADEMIC COMPLEX• STUDENT’S HOSTEL• EXECUTIVE HOSTELS• FACULTY AND STAFF HOUSING

CAMPUS LAYOUT

• The planning is based on the concept of main spine and a secondary spine. The original proposed entrance off the Delhi-Jaipur highway, was to lead on to a junction with the main spine and then further with the secondary spine.

• The academic block would have been the focus of attention formal entrance had been retained. Presently, there are two entrances, one is from the Mehrauli-Gurgaon road while the other one is from the road connecting the Delhi-Jaipur highway with the Mehrauli-Gurgaon road.

• The students hostel wings and the academic complex lie on the main spine. On the secondary spine lie the chairman’s residence, the staff and faculty residences, the ancillary block and the club facilities.

• Building blocks are scattered all over the site, resulting in large distances.• Campus has different zones allocated to academic, residential or recreational

functions.

PLANNING…

ACADEMIC COMPLEXThe academic complex

comprises of the following:• Administration• Faculty• Library• Auditorium• Lecture block• All blocks are double storeyed and have the

concerned department housed in one whole unit• The academic block has been designed around a

system of courtyards. A large central court leads into smaller internal courts, which are in turn, encompassed by academic and administrative functions.

• Singly loaded corridors, which are arcaded and detached from the building, run along these courts.

• The corridors are 6’0” wide and are separated from the working unit at places by a level difference.

• The arcaded corridors form interesting circulation areas by framing views and causing flay of light and shade.

• The academic and the hostel blocks are connected by any covered pedestrian link.

• A paved pathway connects the blocks

LIBRARY…

• The library terminates the central axis staring at the administrative block which is located on the opposite side of the main courtyard. Its location and somewhat different façade treatment makes it the focal point of the academic block.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN – LIB. BLOCK

VIEW OF LIBRARY BLOCK

• The library is housed in double storeyed structure and contains the following:

i. Reference sectionii. Lending sectioniii. Journals

• It holds some 35,000 books and subscribers to over 300 periodicals. It is centrally air conditioned and has good natural and artificial lighting. The different area are well marked with more stacks on the upper floor and the method of storage system and system of control is quite efficient.

REFERENCE SECTION

• Good circulation area and the seating area has been worked out which allows efficient communication between the reader, staff and books.

Page 7: Case Study - Non Architectural - Mdi, Gurgaon

AUDITORIUM…

• It is placed near the lecture block with which it is connected through a covered link (6’-0”). It is centrally air-conditioned and houses the plant in basement.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN AUDITORIUM BLOCK

• The block houses the following functions: - Auditorium with a capacity of 150 - two syndicate rooms with a capacity of 25-30

• The number of natural opening are less and it is mostly dependent on artificial lighting and A.C.

Area of auditorium hall :4000 sq.ft.Area of syndicate room :1000sq.ft.

• The single storeyed block is located just near the administrative area. This location makes it easily accessible for office workers and the participants (both from the lecture and the auditorium block).

CIRCULATION…

OPEN PATHWAYS LINKING THE ADMN. AND THE LIBRARY

• Little consideration has been given to pedestrian pathways, whereas vehicular roads have dominant network in the campus.

• Vehicular roads do not intercept pedestrian pathway connecting academic and hostel blocks.

• The buildings in the academic complex have been connected with a system of open pathways and corridors running around buildings.

• A corridor with arched opening links the lecture block with auditorium.

• There is no covered link between the hostels and the academic complex CORRIDOR LINKING

LECTURE BLOCK WITH THE LIBRARY

BUILDING MATERIALS…

• The architectural treatment by the use of constant order of construction in bricks gives a sense of belonging and makes it a part of the whole campus.

• The simple repetitive geometry of the blocks with the arches and exposed brickwork provide character to the whole campus.

• Even the planter boxes have been constructed of bricks. All other beam and lintels have been finished in red colour.

• Aluminium sections are used for doors and windows and mostly kota stone have been used for flooring.

• Red grit finish has been used in the PGPM block.

LANDSCAPING…

LANDSCAPED AREAS IN AND AROUND ACADEMIC COMPLEX

• The landscaping in the campus embodies sprawling lawns and evergreen trees on both sides of roads. Flowering shrubs too add colour and coolness to the hot and dry climate of Gurgaon.

• Pedestrian pathways in conjunction with landscaped courts define the central axis for circulation in the academic complex.

• The contrast between the green vegetation and the red brick building blocks makes the campus look beautiful.

• Lawns give a feeling of peace, solitude and quality to the space around.

AIR CONDITIONING…• The three storeyed lecture halls, the

library and the auditorium are the three blocks in the campus, which are centrally air-conditioned.

• The A.C plants have been placed in the basement of the lecture and the auditorium block. This has been done to minimize the disturbance caused by A.C equipment.

COVERED PARKING NEAR ACADEMIC

OPEN PARKING NEAR ACADEMIC COMPLEX

PARKING…• Covered as well as open parking areas

have been provided in the campus.

• Individual building blocks have their own parking spaces fed by a dominant network of vehicular roads.

Page 12: Case Study - Non Architectural - Mdi, Gurgaon

OBSERVATIONS AND INFERENCES…• Vehicular roads are dominant in the

campus. The pedestrian pathways should be given emphasis within the campus with vehicular movement restricted to the periphery to ensure a conducive environment for learning.

• Library should be so that it is easily accessible from academic as well as hostel area.

• There is absence of landmarks in the campus.

• There is a good connectivity of the library with the lecture block by provision of connecting corridors on ground as well as first floor in the academic complex but the library is located far off from the PGP classroom block causing inconvenience.

• Good interaction spaces for students should be provided, both in the academic and hostel block.

• Axial planning should be adopted as in the academic complex so as to give visual linkage.

• There is absence of covered pathways in the complex. As a result, the students have inconvenience in going from one block to another during summers and rainy season.

• There should be adequate open spaces for the purpose of informal gatherings or for cultural occasions.

• Absence of commercial complex force students to go outside the campus to meet their daily needs.
