The challengeAmerican Compressed Steel is a scrap steel yard in Ohio; traditionally stockpiles were measured by sight. But with new staff and management coming into the business ACS sought a new way to monitor stock which would increase efficiency whilst providing better reporting systems.

ACS wanted to know the weights being placed onto the scrap conveyor and then the exact weights being deposited into each separate scrap pile. The aim was to have information available at any time on any product.

The solutionACS went to the internet and came across the LOADRITE L2180 Scale and Material Management System (MMS).

After talking with their local distributor ACS was confident the LOADRITE system would meet their needs. A scale was fitted to the conveyor loader which reported weights back to the MMS system installed in the company computers. Then scales fitted to their two caterpillar loaders let them know the weights moving around the site.

All of this information ran through the LOADRITE MMS system reporting in real time. This recorded stock movement and levels which could let the new management know precisely what was in each stockpile. As material was added and removed this information would update automatically.

The resultsThe outcome was a clear picture of all stock and its location within the site. By using the scale fitted to their conveyor loader, ACS were able to ensure that it was running at maximum efficiency by monitoring weights passing through.

This was then applied across the plant allowing all machines to be running at optimal capacity.

Prior to purchasing the LOADRITE system ACS was deciding if they needed to buy a portable shredder to handle any excess work. But with the Loadrite MMS in place they were able to optimise the current machinery without having to outlay additional capital on a shredder.
